  • marco ruas couldn't beat rickson's top student so he was never allowed 2 fight in their shows but your facts are mixed up the gracie's held their vale tudo fights in their dojos behind locked doors if u wanted 2 fight a gracie all u have 2 do is go to their dojo and drop a challenge. ruas never did that rickson never ran from anyone he is the king of brazil and ruas is the king of the streets if ruas really wanted to fight rickson all he had to do was go to rickson's dojo which he never did

  • Marco Ruas is one of the best mixed martial artist of the history of mma in usa, Marco Ruas THE KING OF THE STREETS!!!!!!!

  • A great and forgotten legend!!!!!!!

  • I see the style of Muay Thai is Marco Ruas, and the truth if you have a great technique in the martial art, but for me the best of muay Thai is Ramon Dekkers

  • Master!

  • Ruas é foda, fã eterno!!!!

  • Marco Ruas may be one of the best fighter ever. Like a fedor and Anderson Silva. Marco Rua was almost unbeatable in good shape. Much respect to that man.

  • He is the King of the streets!!!!

  • He was the most complete MMA fighter of his time. I thought he was amazing. Brilliant Athlete..

  • Uma Lenda...

Rickson nem quis meter a cara contra o Ruas..desculpa: cache baixo, a vá!

  • Demônio !

  • KING OF THE STREETS!

  • nails

  • You gotta be a bad motherfucker to earn the nickname King of the Streets in Brazil. A forgotten legend.

  • @bennybagofdonuts According to an interview for the book "Grappling Masters". Ruas actually earned that title in the US. His surname Ruas is translated to Streets in Portuguese and his manager thought it would be cool to bill him as "King of the Streets". Because of the name many people believed he loved picking fights on the street but he confessed none of that was true.

  • @bennybagofdonuts Yes, "the forgotten legend?" but he is a legend. And you, who are you? You are nothing. You're an idiot who can not appreciate the achievements of a man. Never mind whether he's Brazilian, Chinese, African, American, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, or a Martian, he's a warrior, he won his victories with blood and sweat. You're probably someone fat and sedentary.

  • @ordiv12345 I was more or less saying that he's under-appreciated by most fans today, but if you felt the need to slag somebody, go ahead.

  • @bennybagofdonuts My apologies if I made comments out of proportion, but I just wanted to set fire to the chat.

  • a super fighter ,was my favorite. does enybody know what he's doing right now

  • @aleksandrpondios last i heard was that ken shamrock wanted to fight him sometime during 2011, but iam not so sure it will happen.

  • @69gangstar69 thanke you for information,he's about 45 yeras now?Is't it?

  • @aleksandrpondios he is 50 shamrock is 48

  • @69gangstar69 Shamrock already got his shit wrecked by Ruas' protege Pedro Rizzo. Marco hasn't fought for four years but he would probably do the same. Anyway, that fight won't happen.

  • a real street fighter. a champion

  • much to respect for this man!!!!!!

  • Good video, Great fighter

  • Ruas is my favourite fighter of all times. A true legend, a true warrior.

    Bons tempos.

  • where are Ruas?????

  • true fuckin legend

  • Ruas is a great fighter I really like his style.

  • I want to see a match between legends Ken Shamrock and Marco Ruas !

  • 2:16 Ruas Vale Tudo !!!

  • 15 pessoas já apanharam dele!!

  • fuck chuck norris!

  • Ruas was the man , not just as a fighter but as a person also, very humble guy, that showed respect to everyone. Agree that was ahead of his time, shame he came to the ufc past his prime, but he was the first true mma fighter that had it all. Wish him all the best

  • LENDA

  • The Gracies organized every Vale Tudo competition here in Brazil and they kept Ruas out of every event. He was a e realy dangerous and feared fighter, and his legend grew more and more. As he could not fight in Brazil, he was kept out of the picture for a long time. When he fought in the UFC (and won) he proved how ahead of his time he was. I live in Brazil and was there, it was a wild times for martial arts.

  • I agree the Gracies kept him out.. He understood what MMA is all about the amazing conditioning head and hand movements like a boxer, deadly muay thai kicks and the grapling and take downs from the wresting.. He was not as big as his opponents but very dyanamic and variable.. Ahead of his time... a stronger JSP slower ofcourse.

  • @aconchon Is there any media or documentaries about them keeping him out?

I would like to do some research on that and I cannot find anything about it.

  • One of the unsung heroes of MMA

  • A pioneer in MMA crosstraining. Much respect.

  • Did the guy at 2:24 piss him off or something ?

  • big john mccarthey back in the day

  • the first ufc fight i seen was this guy i was like 10 and still remember this he leg kicked some big cunt till he couldt walk

  • Chuck Liddell is not the pioneer of the sport... Ruas is for sure, I remember watching this guy fight when I was a kid...

  • O Ruas é meu parente distante. Meu avô era primo do avô dele. Ele é muito legal! Boa sorte pra ele!

  • what is the last song?

  • what is the last song?

  • whats the song in final?

  • he has the upmost respect to the judoka parodel.

One who understands grappling will understand me.

  • legendario lutadoor do UFC .verdadeiro campeão! lutando varias lutas no mesmo dia.

  • Marco Ruas was also Brazilian Middle weight boxing champion at one time.

  • MASTER!

  • I started watching MMA (at the time, Vale Tudo) because of him. Thank you Marco Ruas!

  • Awesome tribute, thanks for sharing. I've always been a huge Marco Ruas fan. I just wish he had beaten Smith and officially won the second Taktarov fight.

  • i think Ruas's Vale Tudo style showed everybody watching UFC at that time how important it was to have strong stand up along with strong submission skills. He ultimately showed what was most effective in a no holds barred match. MAD RESPIZZY for THE KING OF THE STREETS!

  • O REI!

  • I know its ACDC but whats the song title

  • @hdf561 the song is BIG GUN

  • Couldn't even stand to watch this with the cheesy soundtrack. When will people learn?

  • The Rocky Marciano from MMA

  • O MELHOR!!! A LENDA!!! THE LEGEND!!!

  • Ruas was one of the best of his day, though i must say he was a little over hyped. I don't think he would have coped with the atheletes of today. MMA is moving forward at an incredible rate and the fighters are becoming more and more skilled, that the old 'heroes' like Ruas, Royce Gracie, Taktarov, Vovchanchin, Rutten, etc, are a little too dated.

  • Ruas was the first Mixed Martial Artist! He was the first to cross train Muay Thai, Judo, Luta Livre and even some Jiu Jitsu and challanged the Gracies, when they were untuchables in Brazil. He was ahead of his time, and after his Vale Tudo fight with Pinduka (famous BJJ black belt) when he was just 18 years old, the Gracies kept avoiding him. He is a true legend, ahead of his time!

  • aconchon: I agree with what you say, but the sport itself has moved on and developed so much that todays fighters are true athletes- physically strongers and fitter than the majority of old-school fighters. Maybe i was a little harsh towards Ruas, however, i think today the likes of Fedor have exceeded the fighting abilities of Ruas.

  • @aconchon EXACTLY! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SAW THAT. RUAS WAS USING THAT ALL ROUND FIGHTING STYLE (WRESTLING, THAI BOXING AND SUBMISSIONS) VERY WELL. BUT REMEMBER SHAMROCK WAS A HYBRID GUY TOO BECAUSE HE WAS A JAPANESE STYLE SHOOTFIGHTER, BUT HE DIDNT USE HIS STYLE AS FLUENTLY AS RUAS. RUAS WAS A SMOOTH TRANSITIONAL FIGHTER. I WISH HE WON THE UFC HVYWT TITLE ONE TIME. PAT MILITECH WAS GREAT TOO.

  • @aconchon

Has he never fought any of the gracies ? that seems weird, being that they are all from Brazil ?

  • @steveN111333 At 18 years old he and other fighters challanged the Gracie academy for a no time limit, no rules match. He fought agaist Pinduka, one of the Gracies top black belt and it was a tie. Marco Ruas, Flavio Molina, and Luis Alves were TaeKwon-Do Black belts that started to cross train it with Muay Thai, Wrestilng, Judo and Luta Livre (a brazilian style of submition grapling), it was for sure the beggining of MMA as it is today.

  • He started to challange the Gracies after this fight and and they kept ducking him, the only change he got to fight againg was in the UFC after Royce left. In Brazil, he was a true legend at the time. And he could never fight any of the Gracies, even after clear challanges.

  • @aconchon Gracies kept avoiding him? You sir are sadly mistaken...

  • @bloodyxshirtxstainer I believe what aconchon says, Gracies were great bjj masters so if they lost to Ruas theyr name would dissappear from MMA but later they all lost to experienced fighters who also had knowledge of groundwork and submissions...i dont want to argue with you and i will not reply to your comment.

  • @aconchon I agree. Ruas was really the first guy to come in with the complete package (both a great striker with knockout power and a ground fighter that could take it even to most experienced wrestlers, judoka, and jui-jitsu fighter). I think the next on that list would be Don Frye. Once those two entered, that's when people learned this was more than just style against style and was becoming its own martial art, and started cross training.

  • @aconchon yep he was the next step in the evolution of MMA

  • Marco Huas is a legend. From Kazakhstan

  • @aconchon the first Mixed Martial Artist would have been Bruce Lee, not only did he advocate cross training, he developed the gloves which are now used in MMA

  • @aconchon im sure Marco would have been winning again Rickson Gracie

  • @alucardseperdalv he would have destroyed rickson and royce. if it was just jj, then he would lose, but in mma ruas would murder them.

  • @GeneralVan :D

  • I'm sorry but are you out of your mind!!!!This guy was invincible and was fighting up till 2007 with a nearly perfect record, the only reason these newer "awesome" fighters (talking about from 2000 on) and fans like you can talk that smack is cause they ran from fighting him! Granted we don't officially know how old he is .. I'm sure he still wouldn't turn down a fight. and fyi, take a look at his fights 10 or 11 years ago and see if they remind you of the styles of today!

  • Can't you see for yourself how the skill-levels and fighters have evolved, even from as recent as 2002. I don't take anything away from Ruas, he was ahead of his time 'back then', but like Royce Gracie, opponents training & tactics progress and the old fighters then become obsolete.

As i said, no disrespect at all to Ruas, but Ruas at his best would struggle against the modern day top heavyweights; Fedor, Mir, even Lesnar.

  • Well, Lesnar or Mir arent top heavy weights.

  • Maybe not in the all time top, but currently they are- one is UFC champ and one is a top contender with a win over the current champ.

I'm not saying they're the best pound-for-pound, as without doubt Fedor is that, but how can you say they are not currently in the top 5 heavyweights?

  • @dietermauer lol, couldnt have said it better, beside Ruas was one of the best and most well rounded fighters of all time ! and if he was ten years younger he would prob. be top tree HW in the world today !

  • How can you say he was invincible- his record of losses were:- (Sherdog)

    1995 Loss to Oleg Taktarov

    1996 Draw to Taktarov

    1998 Loss to Alexander Otsuka

    1999 Loss to Maurice Smith

2007 Loss to Maurice Smith again

That is not an invincible record my friend.

Again, i liked Ruas, but the 'hype' around him was exaggerated.

  • Wow my friend do you work for Fox news lol. You are right on the losses however the two to Maurice Smith were both due to knee injuries and both the draw and the loss (decision) to Taktarov were contraversal to say the least, and I have to admit that I didn't hear about the Otsuka fight. Couple that with his wins, and then compare that with the records of todays fighters. As for Lesnar we've only seen him fight a few times and Fedor looks great but I'm not sold yet, Mir lol you're joking right?!

  • The Mir comment was based on his shear size and ability. Lesnar, again because of his shear size, but also wrestling skills and punching power. Also if you;re not sold on Fedor yet then you never will be, simply put, Fedor has been around a long time and won a lot of top fights, but he's now getting old. When you eventually pay attention to him you'l think he's crap because he's beaten due to his age.

  • well if you compare that to some below:

    gilbert melendez : 19-2 forrest griffin : 17-6

    aderson silva : 29-4

    jeremy horn : 83-19

ruas is great but today he would get beat of the top dogs but i believe he would still beat some people

  • Hey nightsnapper I was just wondering, if you can tell me more about the 2nd Smith fight, cause I can't find sufficient info anywhere, did Ruas have a knee injury again? Was it the same knee as the 1st fight? Thanks!

  • he 14-4 and 48 years old and im sure he would still fight but his fight in 2007 was after a 6 year break witch he lost by tko i believe he can still beat some people

  • DW01

I understand your view, and I agree that the sport has moved forward and changed.

My argument is that maybe it is simply not fair or reasonable to campare guys like Ruas, Royce, Rutten, etc to the fighters of today, and that they should only be compared to each other. (To the fighters who were active in their time.)

But I know fight fans love to do that, like the boxing fans who compare Marciano to Tyson, or Joe Louis to Ali.

But I'm not sure if that's legitimate

    What do you think?

  • I think it's natural that the best fighters of today get compared to those of yesteryear, however, i don't think you can compare old champs of a new sport to the current ones, especially seeing as the sport has not only developed and changed, but the rules have changed also.

It's like comparing a football team of 80 years ago the the best teams today, knowing that sports tactics and player athelticism has developed and changed. That's why i dont think Ruas would be good enough to beat the ....

  • likes of Fedor. Mir, even maybe Lesnar or Barnett!

  • You're right that it is the natural thing to compare, but that's all we can do, just compare. You used football in your example, I was going to use cars!

A 1995 Ferrari cannot be compared to a 2005 Ferrari, it should only be compared to another '95 Ferrari, '95 Porsche or '95 Lamborghini, etc..

Weird as this may appear, a fighter is almost like a car! Every year there's a newer version!

The Lesnar we saw in '09 against Mir, certainly improved compared to the first fight in '08

  • Exactly. And every Year a fighter trains he also changes, some for the better and some for the worse.

  • @Abe9096 you have to understand marco was the first guy to cross train 3 different styles.. now everyone is on the multi disipline band wagon.

  • Of course Kalpiper, I already knew that, please don't misunderstand me, you're right, and yes I do understand that Ruas was indeed The Original Ultimate Mixed Martial Artist, it's just a shame some of today's fans don't get that.

Ruas should be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame

  • @Abe9096 I GOT IT! RUAS DESERVES ALOT OF RESPECT FOR THAT TOO. I WISH HE WON MORE TITLES.

  • @dagreatcapri82 Of course he did win lots of titles in Brazil prior to coming to the US. But I think after UFC 7 and UU'95, there may have been some political problems. I was reading that somewhere but I can't confirm how valid it was, I think he wanted a rematch with Taktarov in the UFC but wouldn't get it, and he was supposed to fight Don Frye at UFC 9, I don't know why that didn't workout either. What a superfight that would've been!! Ruas vs Frye

  • @Abe9096 lol Ruas and Frye in a superfight had us really excited when we were teens, but I think it didn't happen due to money. Can't remember. Would have been much better than ken shamrock v Taktarov.

  • @Abe9096 YOU ARE RIGHT! THE SPORT EVOLVED INTO A WHOLE NEW GAME FROM WHEN THEY WERE CHAMPIONS. BOTH SPORTS RESPECTFULLY (BOXING & MMA) ARE MORE TECHNICALLY AND SCIENTIFIC THAN THEY WERE IN THE PAST. THE RULES CHANGE AND EVERYTHING. THATS LIKE COMPARING ROYCE GRACIE TO ANTONIO NOGUIERA, BOTH BJJ GUYS WITH DIFFERENT PACES, GOALS AND TECHNIQUE. GREAT POINT!

  • Ruas vs Bas Rutten. That would've been a great matchup.

  • @DW01 GREAT FIGHT, BUT RUTTEN WOULD KILL HIM. LOL!

  • Ruas is the best leg kicker orf all time absolute legend.

  • This guy was the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Ruas always seemed criminally underrated. His Varelans is still awesome to see. Leg kicks for days.

  • for ya'll that dont kno Ruas was missing link to mixed martial arts... he was the first real MMA fighter to inter the octagon in the UFC and introduce the style to the whole world. if you dont believe me go watch UFC's 1-7 and see for urself...

  • What is the name of this ACDC music??? Anyone knows?

  • this song is called BIG GUNS

  • Big Gun

  • LEGEND.

  • the man

Pena...

  • ele é meu parente *_*

  • é o maradona da UFC

  • ahahahah...is true man..best regard from italy

  • @nunorsky

  • MMA is Chuck Norris middle name

  • really i thought deathbyroundhousekick was :/

  • Chuck Norris=over hyped whiteboy who other whiteboys find cool because they got small dicks and cant fight.

  • Well that was an intellectual comment there.

I personally think that 'Chucky Egg' Norris was only famous because he was the middle-class bored housewives porn material, and therefor marketable by the TV stations.

Btw, i'm white. With a larger than avarage dick. And i can fight. So fuck you.

  • well anyone will tell you there is zero intellectual about a man who feels the need to tell another man his supposed dick size. No all will tell thats a man trying to make up for his short comings. Be those short comings his ability to fight,or his manhood. Have a great day,and may all your statements be so revealing

  • I was actually mocking you my friend... You started the 'dick size' statements, is it because you yourself have a teenie penis that couldn't pleasure a woman at any costs as it would be like inserting a matchstick into a wellington top?

  • Hurst when your statement reveals so much begative things about you. LOL man you got own trying to play some lil game with me. Run along kid and next time think before you open that big mouth. I guess its too bad your mouth and dick arent a matching set.

    OWNED again!

  • Look, i mean re-read your comments and see how childish and silly they are. I mean 'owned'? What are you, a baby? All i gotta say is 'grow up' mate. If you don't understand my mockery then you are indeed, a thick person.

  • yawn. sorry i stopped understand jokes about small cocks after 8th grade. guess that brit educational system isnt as good as i heard. just the same have a great day, mate

  • @hailung23 - there is no reason to insult and dishonor Chuck Norris as you have done. Totally uncalled for.

  • @hailung23 as much as i agree...he does have a BJJ black belt :P

  • The original 'hybrid' fighter. He is the template for all others.

  • pretty unhealthy having him as enemy...

  • XDD you killed me!

  • Its a shame that bas rutten and ruas never fought in our lifetime.

  • O CAra é uma lenda!

  • "O CARA".

  • analytically I agree he was the perfect package wrapped up in a admirable athletic physique that did not look all juiced up but achieved it thru hard training and adaption and had second nature in feeling out the fights. A top pick of all time, tho he coulda been a bit more aggresive in some of his latter battles

  • He is simply the best ever... His style would prevail even today. We can not compare Ruas with Gracies it seems absurd.

  • is that shogun' s older brother?

  • as n fala merda

  • from 2:33 - 2:40 is awesome. people dont use enough leg kicks

  • I miss going to Marco's Gym.

  • Comment removed

  • oh man I loved seeing him stomp that guy's feet, that was pretty darn smart!

  • Thanks for the vid mate. I used to watch this guy on old VHS tapes when I was a kid, Ruas Vale Tudo, Pedro Rizzo was there as well :-) good times. Anyway, muito obrigado!

  • thx for the vid. u da man

  • he should of fought a gracie, would have liked to have seen how he got on ?

  • he did fight a gracie in the 80s when everyone in brazil thought they were invincible and marco thought he could beat their ass and he got his ass handed to him and learned his lesson and started training bjj but he had a smart mentality of cross training (since he already knew muay thai) but gracies rejected it and didnt want none of him and his "blasphemy" and stopped training him or something like taht

  • who told u that bullshit? what 'gracie' did he fight in the '80s'? lol

  • i dont remember the exact gracie/details but

No Holds Barred: Ultimate Fighting and the Martial Arts Revolution by Clyde Gentry

besides what do you care, shouldnt you be plotting against america instead of looking at MMA, Osama?

  • dont dodge questions, it makes you look stupid

  • im sorry, what question did i dodge?

  • Marco Ruas did not lose to a Gracie and start training BJJ. He was a Luta Livre fighter first and foremost, before he ever started fighting NHB or trained in BJJ.

  • The best guy to come out of Lute Livre
