note at :25 The Onion dome is Russian not Greek so don't describe them as Byzintine.

Second their orgin was utilitarian- onion domes have a better chance of standing up to a Russian snow fall than a standard dome. I'm an Orthodox convert so I've read a little bit about on such things.

If you guys have an issue with Onions making you cry, firstly cut the onion in half. Next peel off the outer layer (as you normally would). Then look at the onion, you will see in the center layers of the onion a type of sprout, usually looking a bit green. (you will also notice these sprouts are one whole piece as opposed to the layers). Remove those pieces of "Sprout". It will end your tears, just cut those pieces after you do the rest of the onion.

My dad taught me to periodically run the onion and/or the knife under cold, running water. (Alton says it doesn't work, but I find it helps.)

last winter i had a really bad cold. i couldn't smell anything. so the first thing i did was make some chicken soup (with tons of onions added to it).

i must have spent an half an hour chopping onions but the eye tearing action never got to me. i don't wear contacts and there wasn't much ventilation in the room. I don't get why my inability to smell made my eyes not hurt. Can someone explain this to me?

the sulfur in the onion reacts to the water in your eyes, it has nothing to do with smell

You are partially correct. The chemicals from the onion do react with your eyes. They also react with the sensitive mucus membranes in your sinus cavities. So, like the original poster stated, having a cold and being 'stuffed up' will limit which tissues are exposed to the onion's chemical warfare and thus limit your reaction.

Yea thats true! Once I was cooking soup with my friends and I started chopping onions. After a few minutes two of my friends were crying so much that they had to leave the room (and they weren't even standing near them!) while me and my other friend were completely fine. We couldnt figure it out until we realized that my friend and I wear contacts and the other two dont. As long as I have contacts on I can cut onions for hours without any ill effects. When I wear glasses I dont last two minutes!
