  • one of the most technical band of the world...astonishing musicianship...

  • One of my all time favs...I followed from early days when T. had just joined. (God Bless and Rest his soul. He is Sorely missed.) Saw them many times in Boston at the Paradise and at Berklee College of Music. (Rod is a Prof. on staff at Berklee) I saw Little Feat with Andy, T., and Rod as the Rhythm section (wild!)..Dave Larue can absolutely keep up w/ Steve and double his parts. Great Bass player as well. (plays w/ Satriani too.) Jerry Peek was great too. (Steve Morse Band-The Introduction)

  • The last song (Chips Ahoy) and fade out are monaural? MONAURAL??????

  • Thanks! A nice stroll down memory lane. I'll never tire of these great compositions!

  • strange question: but whats that shirt dave is wearing at 2:08 ive been looking for one for ages and just saw him wearing it

  • @joesatriani1200rulez ...i meant jacket

  • Great video!!!! Love Dixie Dregs and Steve Morse <3

  • If I were to make a Dregs retrospective, it would look a lot like this. Kudus on your awesome photo selection, use of the iMovie and taste in highlighting some great musical passages! I was lucky enough to meet Steve after a show in 1986 (Morse/DiMeola/DeLucia/McLaughlin....yeah, THAT one) and he was gracious, and appreciative on the 50 or so fans who waited at the stage door. What a gentleman, what a great musical legacy...Thanks for posting.

  • Wowza...thanks for putting this together!

One of my Top 5 bands of All-Time.

  • It's about time someone did something like this. I'm an old fan from the late 70's. Used to see the Dregs in the SF Bay area. You should get some sort of award for producing this.

  • What a great job DB, thanks! First saw Steve and the Dregs in 1981 and haven't stopped seeing them since. . Have also seen Steve with every combination he has played with since then and met him a few times..A great guy and teacher!! My biggest influence.. Thanks again for posting this video!! V Approves!!!!

  • That was so well done I am speechless. I forgot just how much I love the Dregs. While attending GIT Steve flew into California to do the Acoustic Trio show with John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia and Al Dimeola. He stopped in at GIT to do two shows and requested a Strat with humbuckers as he only had an acoustic. As I was a Morse disciple, I had a close copy of this original guitar. For lending it to him he gave me backstage passes to meet everyone. He was and remains my biggest influence.

  • david perper was the drummer,mark perper is david's brother-and a fine guitarist too,.;'';.,hoop

  • hey Dave, great work gathering it all together !!!! i also think that the Dixie Dregs were one of the best ever all around band !!!!!!!!! I think Steve Morse is totally awesome and i give him 10 out of 10 as an amazing Virtuoso Guitarist !!! they all just super musicians just like all ....rockers should be :-)

  • I first heard and was awestruck by the Dregs in Augusta, GA in 1974-75 (it may have been Dixie Grit back then). I knew the drummer they had then and went with them out to a country house where they rehearsed for hours and then had the pleasure of hauling their equipment to "The Whipping Post", Augusta's hot spot club on Broad St. What a day for me! They had Mark Perper as drummer in those days, sounded great, and it was a blast. Such a joy to see them explode on the international scene.

  • Fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to put that together! Love the early stuff as my first time seeing the Dixie Dregs was in 1978 from 3-feet away at the legendary Exit/Inn in Nashville. The Dregs simply were the best band anywhere and I greatly miss their music and spirit. Steve Morse's music and these players changed my life much for the better and I am grateful tor having been able to see them so many times when I was young enough to appreciate the energy and grace.

  • I like the medley of music, nice mix

  • Flight of the Cockroach is a take of Bumble Bee (obviously). It was a staple of the live shows in the early years of the band.

  • Gosh, thanks so much for putting this together. Such an underrated band. Music didn't start for me until I heard the Dregs live at the Vogue theatre in Indpls. from that point, my life was listening to the Dregs.

That opening tune is something I've never heard. And I have everything by the Dregs, vinyl and CDs. Any idea where I can pick up "Flight Of The Cockroach?" I gotta have that.

  • Ha, my bad about Jerry, its in there ;) Went by quick.

Thanks for the documentary on my all time favorite band!

  • Great job, but why no mention of Jerry on violin? I saw the Dixie Dregs with Allen (Dregs of the Earth tour) and later The Dregs with Mark doubling on guitar (Industry Standard tour), and a few SMB shows after as well, but Mahavishnu with Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Goodman were not just a little influential on early Mr. Morse. Steve is a nice guy, its true!

  • Looks like u edited this video with iMovie.. How did you do the intro with the floating boxes?

  • @simpsonmusic Yep, IMovie it is. I think Ive pretty much used every transaction available ah! The floating boxes is a little bit of a cheat. Ive taken that straight off one of Dixie Dregs DVD I have and basically edited to fit in with the audio mix.

  • What the hell is the tune that opens this video? Been listening to Dregs for 33 years and have never heard that one. Dig the absurd doubling of Steve's guitar by Andy West from 0:26 to 0:33. Actually, dig Andy West's doubling of Steve's stuff wherever it is! Christ, I miss that guy. Love Dave LaRue and am glad to have him, but I miss Andy terribly. Anbody who can play Steve's guitar parts is a hell of a player; anyone who can play them on bass is one sick player...

  • @beeroosterm Yep, I really wanted to include something rare in the mix, for the hard core fans listening pleasure ; ) Thats off a bootleg I got from a friend. Its basically a live recording of the Dregs at The Miami Music School circa 1975. I think its called Flight Of The Cockroach. Very early dazzling Dregs!

  • @davebova Well, thanks very much. Will ask Steve about that one if he ever gets off the friggin' road with DP. He used to give a free guitar clinic once a year near where I live but he was too busy this year to do it. He hears the same questions all the time and loves it when you try to stump him - or ask a relevant question...

  • @beeroosterm Hah! That first tunes from Rod's recital! Remember it like it was yesterday.

  • @Mondoslug The second one's also from his recital, "Country Punk". Rod's playing piano on it.

  • Kick ass tribute!

Since we had progressive fm radio in GR, Dregs were' objects of my study of music

and my guitarist/composer obsessions. Steve is also the nicest guy in music. Blessings on him and his in these trying times. I love him as the slightly older genius brother I never had. Steve you entertain me with stuff 30 years ago!

    Thanks OP for this.

  • These guys have been ripping off Kansas for decades now.

  • I was at the Roxy the July 29th "79 Front row!! I am reliving an absolute dream. Thanks to yall' Dregs fan in Texas!!

  • I'm a huge Dregs/SMB fan; seen them in every incarnation since 1978. I found this video on Steve's Facebook page - not a page I generally go to. Steve used to pay much more attention to his stevemorseorg page but there's been nothing new since March. Will Steve's Facebook page become the de facto main page for his stuff?

  • @beeroosterm the site you mnetion leads to someone totally different these days. You're probably referring to a very old list. There is the SM email list which has been active since 1998. Official FB, MS pages have probably taken more of an active role with fans in recent months... I think these sites provides more media gratification but the email list still remains somewhat more personal amongst its friends and participants.

  • @davebova My mistake - I meant stevemorseinfo

  • @beeroosterm

dave..great job...i was dregs tour manager, traveled with band. they were a trip in and of themselves. one of my greatest bands. i called them my baby band. rod used to call me momma. i smile every time i think of them. thank you for video. shelli banks

  • @philipvictorperry Cheers Shelli Banks! What a good job u had! Oh boy I would have loved to see the Dregs live in those days, especailly during the Dregs Of The Earth era.

  • I just uploaded a few Dregs tunes, and while checking them out I stumbled onto this vid. Loved it. Listen to how Andy West just entirely KICKS BALLS in the intro material. Unreal!!!

In just under 4 weeks there have been 1,264 views and 45 likes checked. I'd say that means there's a LOT of Dregs fans on the Tube.

  • @kokakolakidd Thank you for your kindest comment. Really appreciate it. I really feel the Dregs and the WHOLE of Dregs circle being something to be immensely wonderful and grateful to be part of. Dregs as a band has always been the finest link between jazz, rock and classical music. Is this too much of a statement?

  • use to rock and roll to the Dregs @ the Partridge Inn Augusta GA. back in the 70's WOW! THANX~!

  • @BarefootCharlie cool man you probably saw this amazing INSTRUMENTAL band at their rock n rolling best! Jealous! lol!

  • Dave, Too cool. Off to see Steve tonight at the Greek Theater in LA.

  • @rbackermai lucky!

  • You should be so proud of this. Thanks so much for posting. Long live Steve Morse and the great Dregs.

  • Great job, Dave, thanks! I welcome the chance to re-live the days of first discovering this great band. I devoured every album as they arrived, listened to them grow and mature, and saw them numerous times. Thanks for including Jerry Goodman. The tour with him was one of the most powerful and brilliant I ever saw. I love those old magazine covers. Really brought back some memories.

  • I'm glad I found this! You did a terrific job. Thanks!

The Dregs are a musician's band of the highest order. Few musicians have moved me this much: the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Billy Cobham, Tower of Power, and of course Buddy Rich. We really are lucky to have had the opportunity to enjoy the tremendous talent of Steve, Rod, and all the Dregs.

  • Very nice work as well btw :)

  • THIS is what makes steve morse STEVE MORSE! And obviously each member of the band is a virtuoso and exceptionally talented. THIS is what a marriage is supposed to be like

  • Fantastic! you forget how good and original these guys were and are. Thanks for putting this together.

  • Brilliant! Be prepared for LOTS of hits. I may come back again myself.

  • Thanks everyone so much for your kind replies. It's heart warming to know how much you like this band. I too just happen to listen to them nearly everyday myself nate. it's good to know I'm not the only one...

  • As others have said, Thank You Dave. Steve's music fills so much of my iTunes catalog, I find myself listening to his incredible music everyday. Watching this wonderful video may help others appreciate the band, the music, and the artists. I must also add that the video made me a little sad...that T is no longer here, and that the Dregs are not as famous as Yes or Genesis. Thanks for spreading the word.

  • yooooo Dave you just made my day. This is one awesome tribute!! thanks so much for the effort!!

  • @karenshiny Pleasure karen, I lke your piece btw. beautiful subtle delay/reverb on your guitar. slightly Pat Metheny-ish. Nice work..

  • @karenshiny been a fan since the summer of 79. seen them 79,80,81,82 and morse in 83/84

    truly makes music memorable

  • @63drawoh darn right karen :-)

  • that stuff at the beginning is just sick! 00:35 is absolutely GONE!

  • @JonP1961 I know.. dude.. totally retarded!

  • awesome tribute!

  • Guntersville Town Hall 1977 ! ( Guntersville, AL )

  • Nice Job Dave, you can do my videos from now on if you like?

  • @GuitarPlanetVideos That's cool. Let's keep in touch..

  • Excellent Collage! Thanks Dave!

  • Excellent!!! Thank you Dave. What a wonderful job you did.

  • @floydsproduce thanks mate

  • How embarrassing for me! I haven't listened to Travel Tunes in a very long time, and didn't recognize it out of context.

  • Great video Dave. I wish the band would tour again soon. Dregs concerts were the best!

  • This is absolutely fantastic. Thanks for doing this Dave.

I've seen every lineup of Dixie Dregs, Dregs, Morse Code, Steve Morse Band, Kansas, Purple and have yet to see Steve make a mistake. He has set the bar high and is also one of the most humble guys I've ever met.

  • this is awesome - great old pics of one of the greatest fusion rock groups ever!!!!!

  • Hey thanks man, that's pretty cool. That piece at 3:36 is off the second album What If. The track is called Travel Tunes. Curiously this is the only track in the entire Dregs catalog that's credit to both Andy West and Steve Morse. Steve said that Travel Tunes (or part of it) was possibly the very FIRST track that he and Andy ever played together. I feel it could have been this very section he's talking about...

    Cheers, Dave

  • This great video has inspired my first ever YouTube comment - you did an amazing job! Thanks for your efforts in paying tribute to the instrumental world's Beatles.

Where did the music at 3:36 come from?
