as much as I love The Hobbit animated movie,I don't think Jacksons remakes will have that quaility to them, people will watch it for Smaug being epic, dwarves killing goblins, not traipsing through sun kissed meadows singing ballads of mirth and such.
@bloodsling that's why I think in a lot of ways the Rankin-Bass animated series does more justice to the SPIRIT of Tolkien's works than the Jackson movies do. Too bad they didn't have the license for the first 2 books and the resources Jackson had when he made the movies. Not that the movies are bad by any stretch of the imagination...but somehow they don't quite touch the magic of the books in the way these cartoons do. Just my opinion.
@Cancrizans thumbs up to you, sir. quite right. Rankin-Bass had a way of revealing a sort of magic that no one else has ever been able to equal. Especially in regards to the Hobbit, which, in my mind, never felt as epic as the Lord of the Rings. I love the recent trilogy, but, like you, i sometimes think Tolkien would have approved more of the original cartoon Hobbit than the epic trilogy....
I did love Jackson's movies but I agree with you completely. Tolkien's books have a great deal of songs in them and the Rankin-Bass movies captured this very important facet that was missing in the movies in addition to a certain innocence and sweetness that was conveyed in the written works.
@SongsJerome the its so easy not to try version is return of the king. Roads go ever ever on is the hobbit version. Both made by the same company, and so the song you mentioned is the continuation.
This is my favorite version of this song. These words have been put to many different tunes, but this one sounds exactly how I imagine the Shire folk would sing it.
OOOHHH!!! This is from the original ANIMATED VERSION of the Hobbit that came out before I had a thinking mind!! This brings back such memories! Thank yoU!!
I am NOT one of those whiny girly girls who has to grab a tissue when she watches movies, but this song brings me nearly to tears every time I hear it.
Glenn has such a powerful & unique voice. Glad to hear he's still going strong. His "Baby the Rain Must Fall" is one of my all-time favorite tunes. THANKS so much for sharing this delightful gem with us. May you & yours have your HAPPIEST holiday season ever! :)
Ever since I saw The Hobbit as a kid, this guy's voice has captivated me. XD He's such a beautiful singer... He can really catch ones heart with his singing.
Agreed! I too found his voice memorable from The Hobbit. Some think the songs corny from that animation- but I loved the music in that animation.
Would love to hear a raw recording of the alternate lyrics to this melody from The Return of the King. I think I read somewhere that Mr. Yarbrough wrote that version.
Great song, such talent. it makes me soooo happy listening to it. i hope they add this song the the 2011 and 2012 movie!!!!! The Hobbits Rocks my socks lol
They won't use it, due to copyrights. However, it's almost certain they will use a song with the same lyrics. This is because the words are in the book, and songs are a big part of The Hobbit. In fact, the version that of this song in TLotR books was used in the movies, though that has a slightly different metre and is shorter. But that Glenn Yarbrough's version would appear in the movies? Don't try your luck.
@KingElrohir I actually hope not. This don't give me a flick of feeling that reminds me of the Middle-earth universe, in any of it's cultures. It doesn't fit at all. Then again I haven't seen the original the Hobbit movie, but I've read the book and most of Tolkien's work.
I love this movie!

One of my best moments was reading the hobit to my kids. Then we watched the 1977 movie and loved listening to the ballads sung by Glenn.
One good book plus one good movie plus one good song = a memory I will never forget.

@RPGfanatic100
yes. his group the Limelighters did the intro. The Limelighters and Glenn himself as a solo artist did a lot of movie intros.
