The question is who can you listen to the longest and enjoy? They are both great for similar reasons creative fingerstyle playing SMith repertoire is less blues influenced than Tommy's.

This is so pathetic.. Every video with Tommy and Richard playing together, and almost every video of each of them, turns into an argument about who is better... The fact of the matter is, that it is impossible to determine who is the better guitarist. It is unquantifiable.

Do you think Richard or Tommy would be impressed that you lot are fighting about which one is better?

Just grow up, and enjoy some best music, played by some of the best musicians that you'll ever hear.

I saw Richard AND Tommy Emmanuel on stage together at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville this week... and HOLY GEEZ... that was a BUNCH of talent on the stage at one time... Richard had blown up his guitar and had to use one of Tommy's... and STILL played the hell out of it. You guys that are arguing over who is better are missing the point. Their styles compliment one another, and they made doubly good music together! :-)

Tommy is so much better than this guy. He can only be dreaming to pick like tall fidler the hunt. This guy is good but tommy beats him in every way.

Thats not completely true ! I am a great Tommy fan and have been to many of his concerts. But TE is a 'live' performer- you will realise that if you buy any of his CD's Richard on the other hand has produced many fine CD's I would buy without having heard first. Richard has a more varied musical capability

Both Richard and Tommy have their own merits. How they look is immaterial. Tommy once played the best Merle Travis set that I have ever heard and it gave me chills. His own compositions just don't seem to endure for me - sometimes less is more but you have to admire his dazzling abilities.

I'm sorry but that is a GROSSLY exaggerated statement ! TommyE surpasses almost anyone 'live' with technical wizardry -but you are NOT guaranteed a good CD from TommyE,,,,He has I'm afraid recorded many bland tracks. RichardS (England) has more musicality !

The guitar Richard plays is made by Kirk Sand in Laguna Beach, CA. One day both Tommy E and Richard were in his shop together. The camera rolled. As a duel, Richard beat Tommy to a Pulp. Richard is far and away the better guitar player.
