Once again someone posted 4 dislikes how stupid are some YOUTUBERS? I think from now on if someone dislikes something they need to say why! Just dumb! Anyway I love the New Union Pacific red line paint skeme, that is so cool!!!!! I guess I hadnt seen that before.
you can tell that those engines are in their " run in time" just by listening to the pop of those cylinders. damn shame that the rail roads beat the hell out of some of them.
It's not a Dash-9 lol. It's the ES44DC, practically a enviromentally friendly C44-9W (Dash-9). The body and DC traction between the two make them hard to identify. But these are new locomotives and the Dash 9 was replaced by the AC4400CW (it's now replaced by the ES44AC) years ago. Sorry If I sound like a jerk, I just thought you might of wanted to know. :)
Nice video. If you can get close enough to them to get some "under-carriage" views, it would help this old farts mind, a bit! Once you work on them, a while, you like looking at them, especially after you've been away from them for a while! I worked the NS for 37 years, and am off sick! I miss being under them, as sick as that may seem! Railroading gets in your blood! Keep-on pumping those videos out!
Geeez, why so many air hoses? They only need one in each direction, don't they? By the way, where have al, the comments gone? I'm sure I made a very complimentary comment on here before, but don't see it any more.
@JetMechMA why so many air hoses? You have 3 hoses, that connect the engineer's brake-stand to the other brake stands, so that the on-board air brake equipment will actuate properly and in sync. Then, you have your Main Reservoir hose, the one in the middle closest to the coupler, that charges the train air. By dropping the pressure, on that line, air equipment onboard the cars applies the brakes. The big hose, across between locomotives is the MU cable, for electrical control, eng., speeds, etc.
@egpg2000 That is correct. You pay less for the GE's upfront, but more in the long run on maintenance and repair's. The emd's you pay more up front, but less in maintenance. And the EMD's will keep chugging away.
@gebass6 That's the air compressor. GE uses a belt driven compressor off the drive shaft. The initial "whoop" noise is the pulley tightening the belt against the drive shaft to engage the compressor. All other North American locomotive manufacturers used a directly-driven compressor that always spun when the engine was running but only activated when needed.
it does sound kinda klunky. GE can make money in many other areas (aircraft turbines, nuc./steam generators, security systems and what ever else, etc...), EMD is the locomotive engine of choice, all over the world.
The engines sound like a really low idling Briggs and stratton lawn mower, i like EMD's myself, you should check ot my video, just look up SD60m #2409. It is a TRI CLOPS!!!
Because they are 4 stroke diesel engines and operate a different air compressor than the GMs they will always sound different. They sound like a 4 stroke.
I know that silly, I work with big block engines here at home and I hear a similarity in noise correspondant to the locomotives on here.
I too am an engine expert, doing diagnostics on them is a jiff, which is why I see nothing wrong with these units. All I really see right there, is a lot of money and a lot of power that went into those units.
whyisitused - I think most diesels are made in Canada by GM and there are a few builders still in the US. In Portland I've heard about streetcar manufacturing (US made)
Boy America has really lost its touch for good tough equipment...I think we deserve our spot in the world! See ya down the rails, or off too the side...hahahah

it does sound kinda klunky. GE can make money in many other areas (aircraft turbines, nuc./steam generators, security systems and what ever else, etc...), EMD is the locomotive engine of choice, all over the world.
theratfarmer 1 year ago
@theratfarmer
Engine of choice? Says who?
Older EMDs used to be the workhorse of North America. Now, ask any engineer or conductor, the new EMD ACES suck balls.
BNSF was handed somewhere in the neighborhood for 50 free ACEs if they put an order in.
The new GEs are superior to EMDs in comfort, rideability, cab quietness, and as far as I'm concerned, reliability.
CYQT 1 year ago
@CYQT I highly doubt EMD just donated BNSF 100 million dollars.
coborn35 1 year ago
@coborn35 I don't. When you have a junk product, you pretty much have to entice ppl to buy 'em.
CYQT 1 year ago
@theratfarmer I would not say engine of choice as the class 1's have far more GE power than EMD. Both companies make great quality engines
