Hongkong and Singapore, especially mainland China. They're the number one prejudice people in the World. They always mistreat people from other countries. Not to mention Middle Eastern Arab nations another violators of basic human rights.
come on , we are not living in a perfect world. there is no way to avoid discrimination.the best way to avoid being discriminated is to enhance themselves by making more money,
We should never address people in racist term, although we don't mean to be little other races, now a day it is just plain rude and inconsiderate of us. HK education should address of that. When you spit on the floor or out off a car window, I know exactly what your education/class background you came from - low class.
I am sure they all wish to be recognized as Hongkongers as well as wanting to preserve their maternal cultures. It also applies to Asian people in Western countries - wanting to feel like part of their adopting country and also to feel that they belong to their own heritage.
i genuinely feel for the minorities in the way that they struggle to assimilate into our culture but we still focus on our ethnic differences or even discriminate them. i think its a good start to pass the laws protecting the minorities but in a long term perspective, its all about EDUCATION. racism is fucking wrong.
And I wouldn't want to date a Hong Kong girl. They're very un-interesting and narrow minded. You can almost predict every action or word they're going to say.
@ted2924 YO BRO THAT SUCKS HK GIRLS WONT DATE ME? BAD STORY BRO DUDE. THANK GOD IM GAY AND HK BOYS LOVE THEM SOME GWAI LO & AH CHA DICK WUT WUT HAYYYYY
i grew up hearing the word "ah cha" in hong kong and never thought anything of it. now when i get call "a chink" in the west, i finally realised what the indians and pakistanis felt in hk. i wish i stood up and said something when i heard fellow hk chinese said "ah cha", but i never did.
I know, I wish I had the guts to confront people like that. It really annoys me when I hear names like that being called. At least I've confronted people I know.
@rathlone Abit different dude, when people say Ah Cha in East Asian countries.. for the most part it isn't said with HATE and resent... it's mockery yes.. but racism is about intent. I have no problems with people calling me a chink etc etc.. but people in the West say it with hate and resentment.. that is the real difference.
But who would enforce them? I don't think cops give half a shit when someone is being a bigot. The penalties for being a racist is almost non-existent.
The woman speaking in Mandarin was talking about when she first came to Hong Kong trying to do business that she was constantly thought to be a prostitute and how she is constantly called wai po(grandmother).
The first I find disturbing. Is that how Chinese men foreign womem?
The second one is weird; she's young. In main land China the people have a racist habbit of calling foreigners lao wai, but I never heard wai po.
Lao Wai is racist. If you spend some time in China, you'll understand. None of your friends will ever call you this. You'll hear it on the streets as you walk by and by people talking about you behind your back; but never to your face.
Apparently, the Southern Chinese refer white people as Guai (Ghost) was because when the European first arrived in Canton, most people had never seen a white person before and they thought they'd seen ghosts cos their pale skin and red hair resembled the Chinese myths of how a ghost looked like.
Or it could've been because of the European invasions and their aggression to annex parts of China and its wealth and resources that 'inspired' the Chinese to start calling them "Guai" (Ghosts or Devils).
I don't know if the Northern Chinese call white people Guai. But they were more experienced trading or interacting with the Europeans like the ancient Romans and later the Dutch.
northerners are just as racist as the cantonese, except their slurs (apart from lao wai) tend to be for russians, koreans and muslims
then again, mandarin is not a really rude language. worse u can say is call someone a castrated dog or a baby rabbit something. not like our poetic cussing :)
Northerner Chinese = Manchurians = Qing dynasty = they let the invasion of the white devils and the japs,That's why the other Chinese (Hans) hates you.
They don't really call white people Guai now. Occasionally they call Japanese people guizi (a term used in World War II) and Korean people paocai (pickles) or bangzi (stick), especially under confrontational situations. I'd say most Northern Chinese terms that can be classified as racist are directed towards those two countries.
Many people in Hong Kong don't really know much about our history. I don't think Hong Kong history is even taught at school. They usually teach either ancient Chinese history or European history. What about our own? Perhaps more people would understand the minorities and treat them equally if we understand more about our own history and politics.
Also, What's important is that if people want to be accepted by the society. They really ought to make their contribution to the society and really integrate. i.e. learn the language and the customs.
I've met white people who were born and brought up in HK but they don't speak a word of Cantonese. And Chinese people who've been in the UK for decades and only speak very little English. How do they expect to be accepted if they don't even make an effort?
Perhaps, HK should adopt the language policy in Singapore where English is the lingua franca that everyone speaks regardless of race. I find it hard to live in HK because cantonese has 9 notes and is really difficult to master.
But why should they? Hong Kong is a Chinese city. The majority of the population is Chinese.
Surely, you wouldn't suggest the UK or Germany or any other Western countries to take up a foreign language as their own just because there're a few immigrants who aren't good at learning the host language. Your suggestion has an undertone of colonialist arrogance and an inferior/superior complex to it.
Japanese is a hard language to learn. Should they start adopting English as their official language just because they have a few immigrants finding it hard to learn Japanese?
I'm not having a go at you but the suggestion seems ridiculously unreasonable.
If several groups of different people decided to get together to build a brand new country then it would be wise to choose a common language that everyone could understand.
Also, None of us was born with any knowledge of any languages. We have to learn them. You were not born knowing how to speak English or any European languages just because you're white, and you were not born speaking Chinese just because you're Chinese. So if you decide to immigrate to a foreign country and to make it your home, why wouldn't you want to learn the language and the cultures? You were not forced to move there at gunpoint.
I do understand where you are coming from, as I'm also Chinese except I'm from Singapore. Of course I'm not forced to move to HK, let alone being forced to do so at gunpoint. I love HK a lot and every year without fail I would spend at least a week there visiting my relatives.
I love the local food in HK and the shopping experience is always fantastic as I really love getting myself new clothes a lot. Its vibriancy and variety really attract me. I even thought of staying in HK since I have relatives there and plus my company also has operations in HK as well; I'm single and I can move easily without much worries.
Chinese is not a single race or is it a single language.
Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Mongols, and other Eastern Eurasians, as well as Polynesians and Native North and South Americans are actually racially related.
What I was trying to imply was that English could be more widely used in HK, just like in Singapore, it would make the society become more welcoming and inclusive to foreigners who would like to live there or work there. Cantonese would always remain as HK's 1st language and mother tongue, it is about making people in HK become more effectively bilingual, which in turn makes the territory more competitive so as to maintain its international financial hub status.
Uhh typical Singaporean, white dog. Yeah giving up your own language and embrace English and let White spit on your face. Great idea. Singaporean dog. Luckily HK is under China, with the great PRC, she will lead HK to more nationalist and patriotic.
Just like Singapore, HK is also a very capitalistic and outcome-driven society. However, the English proficiency level has been declining in HK and the government shouldn't let it happen as this, in a larger sense, will affect the employability of its people. Bilingualism is key, but it's more about achieving effective bilingualism.
Thank you so much for sharing your videos. Ethnic communities and new immigrants do play a very important role in our society. 75% of the Chinese population in HK originally came from Mainland China. Most of our parents or grandparents were once new immigrants, so people need to take that into account when we judge others. Also ethnic communities like the Indian community, they have been in Hong Kong possibly longer than most of us Chinese.
I'm Chinese living in the UK, I do sometimes get unnecessary shit from white people for no good reason.
People should not be judged by their colours nor their ethnic and social backgrounds. If we don't consider other minorities part of our society. Unless you're native Hong Kong farmers from the countryside, perhaps we shouldn't consider ourselves Hong Kong people either.
also a chinese in the uk (respect for not saying british-chinese), and i agree with your essay :)
as a mainlander ive faced a lot of discrimination everytime ive been to hk, coming from a multicultural district of my city in china with uyghurs, hui, nigerians, arabs, whites and of course han chinese live in relative unity it was a shock to the system and i still identify more with chinese, flips, indos etc more than hk chinese in hk
I think the longer I live in the West, the more I'm proud to be Chinese, and the more I appreciate other cultures and people. Not generalising, but I think a lot of HKers can be very narrow-minded and ignorant about things they're not interested in. it's hard to have a decent conversation with them about anything important.
What's important to them is what new show is going to be on TVB, how cool their phones are, and what Japanese idol is coming over to have a concert in HK (another form of self inflected inferiority that's not much talked about).
You're generalising BUT it's pretty true. HongKongers do have an inferiority complex. A lot of them do think anything from Western countries (including Japan) is better. They're not curious enough to learn & they're too scared to be different.
They laugh at & look down on things that they don't understand or never seen before.
With that attitude, HK can never be pioneers, they can only be followers because they trap themselves in a mediocre level by being narrow-minded, ignorant & arrogant.
@Rab1975bit You're generalising BUT it's pretty true. HongKongers do have an inferiority complex. They laugh at & look down on things that they don't understand or never seen before.
<------------inferioiriy complex ? another mainland Chinese boy pretending a HongKonger again. youtube.com/user/owardis397 ?
@Johnsonhk100 You are a moron! How do you prove YOU really are from Hong Kong yourself?? You could be some idiot pretending to be a Hongkonger talking shit just to give Hong Kong a bad name.
Educating people especially the young generations really is the way to go. People do need to be educated. The existence of different minorities should be reintroduced to us Chinese. Then we'd know more about their histories and contributions to Hong Kong in order to understand them and accept them.
If people don't recognize their existence. Why do you think HK's minorities would want to integrate into our society? We really MUST address important issues like this. It's just ironic to have such a patronizing presenter presenting a program that talks about discrimination against minorities. I can't believe we ignore the fact that people have been discriminated against & we've only just become aware of it. I feel ashamed.
I must say the presenter was being a bit of a patronizing knob when he was talking to the female Indian audience who phoned-in. She was saying that her family had been in Hong Kong for three generations. Then the presenter commented how good her Cantonese was by saying " No wonder you speak Cantonese so well". What the fuck was he talking about?! She didn't even have an accent. She's from Hong Kong!

Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago
Johnsonhk100 3 months ago

i grew up hearing the word "ah cha" in hong kong and never thought anything of it. now when i get call "a chink" in the west, i finally realised what the indians and pakistanis felt in hk. i wish i stood up and said something when i heard fellow hk chinese said "ah cha", but i never did.
rathlone 4 years ago 25
I know, I wish I had the guts to confront people like that. It really annoys me when I hear names like that being called. At least I've confronted people I know.

HRVkillChetnics 1 year ago
@HRVkillChetnics Ah Cha mean that cha mean low class or poor or inferior
MingTheMerciful 1 year ago
@rathlone Abit different dude, when people say Ah Cha in East Asian countries.. for the most part it isn't said with HATE and resent... it's mockery yes.. but racism is about intent. I have no problems with people calling me a chink etc etc.. but people in the West say it with hate and resentment.. that is the real difference.

I think its great that they have laws against discrimination in HK.... Im not sure if such laws in anywhere in north america
christpunchers 4 years ago
Are yo kidding? :D lol, these laws exist since a long while in western countries!
alouette888 3 years ago
But who would enforce them? I don't think cops give half a shit when someone is being a bigot. The penalties for being a racist is almost non-existent.
christpunchers 2 years ago 2
The woman speaking in Mandarin was talking about when she first came to Hong Kong trying to do business that she was constantly thought to be a prostitute and how she is constantly called wai po(grandmother).
The first I find disturbing. Is that how Chinese men foreign womem?
The second one is weird; she's young. In main land China the people have a racist habbit of calling foreigners lao wai, but I never heard wai po.
jeminijem1 5 years ago
Lao Wai's meant to be kinda friendly like Lao Hsueng (Old Brother - Buddy, Mate). It's not a racist name.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago
Lao Wai is racist. If you spend some time in China, you'll understand. None of your friends will ever call you this. You'll hear it on the streets as you walk by and by people talking about you behind your back; but never to your face.
jeminijem1 4 years ago
the quai po she was talking about literally meant Devil Lady (not sure what English word to use, but old kind).

Apparently, the Southern Chinese refer white people as Guai (Ghost) was because when the European first arrived in Canton, most people had never seen a white person before and they thought they'd seen ghosts cos their pale skin and red hair resembled the Chinese myths of how a ghost looked like.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago 2
yea, i thought so too
aznjokeryou 4 years ago
Or it could've been because of the European invasions and their aggression to annex parts of China and its wealth and resources that 'inspired' the Chinese to start calling them "Guai" (Ghosts or Devils).
Rab1975bit 4 years ago
I don't know if the Northern Chinese call white people Guai. But they were more experienced trading or interacting with the Europeans like the ancient Romans and later the Dutch.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago
northerners are just as racist as the cantonese, except their slurs (apart from lao wai) tend to be for russians, koreans and muslims
then again, mandarin is not a really rude language. worse u can say is call someone a castrated dog or a baby rabbit something. not like our poetic cussing :)
qwertytrewqwer 4 years ago
Northerners Chinese don't like Cantonese people because of language rivalry.
ted2924 4 years ago 2
Northerner Chinese = Manchurians = Qing dynasty = they let the invasion of the white devils and the japs,That's why the other Chinese (Hans) hates you.
anaaaaal 3 years ago
They don't really call white people Guai now. Occasionally they call Japanese people guizi (a term used in World War II) and Korean people paocai (pickles) or bangzi (stick), especially under confrontational situations. I'd say most Northern Chinese terms that can be classified as racist are directed towards those two countries.

Many people in Hong Kong don't really know much about our history. I don't think Hong Kong history is even taught at school. They usually teach either ancient Chinese history or European history. What about our own? Perhaps more people would understand the minorities and treat them equally if we understand more about our own history and politics.
Rab1975bit 5 years ago
Also, What's important is that if people want to be accepted by the society. They really ought to make their contribution to the society and really integrate. i.e. learn the language and the customs.
I've met white people who were born and brought up in HK but they don't speak a word of Cantonese. And Chinese people who've been in the UK for decades and only speak very little English. How do they expect to be accepted if they don't even make an effort?
Rab1975bit 5 years ago 3
Perhaps, HK should adopt the language policy in Singapore where English is the lingua franca that everyone speaks regardless of race. I find it hard to live in HK because cantonese has 9 notes and is really difficult to master.
jemdude22 4 years ago
But why should they? Hong Kong is a Chinese city. The majority of the population is Chinese.
Surely, you wouldn't suggest the UK or Germany or any other Western countries to take up a foreign language as their own just because there're a few immigrants who aren't good at learning the host language. Your suggestion has an undertone of colonialist arrogance and an inferior/superior complex to it.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago 2
Japanese is a hard language to learn. Should they start adopting English as their official language just because they have a few immigrants finding it hard to learn Japanese?
I'm not having a go at you but the suggestion seems ridiculously unreasonable.
If several groups of different people decided to get together to build a brand new country then it would be wise to choose a common language that everyone could understand.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago
Also, None of us was born with any knowledge of any languages. We have to learn them. You were not born knowing how to speak English or any European languages just because you're white, and you were not born speaking Chinese just because you're Chinese. So if you decide to immigrate to a foreign country and to make it your home, why wouldn't you want to learn the language and the cultures? You were not forced to move there at gunpoint.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago
I do understand where you are coming from, as I'm also Chinese except I'm from Singapore. Of course I'm not forced to move to HK, let alone being forced to do so at gunpoint. I love HK a lot and every year without fail I would spend at least a week there visiting my relatives.
jemdude22 4 years ago
I love the local food in HK and the shopping experience is always fantastic as I really love getting myself new clothes a lot. Its vibriancy and variety really attract me. I even thought of staying in HK since I have relatives there and plus my company also has operations in HK as well; I'm single and I can move easily without much worries.

superlemon50 2 years ago
It's absolutely laughable that you think Chinese people is a single race.
AquaExecution 2 years ago
Chinese is not a single race or is it a single language.
Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Mongols, and other Eastern Eurasians, as well as Polynesians and Native North and South Americans are actually racially related.
HalifaxHercules 1 year ago
What I was trying to imply was that English could be more widely used in HK, just like in Singapore, it would make the society become more welcoming and inclusive to foreigners who would like to live there or work there. Cantonese would always remain as HK's 1st language and mother tongue, it is about making people in HK become more effectively bilingual, which in turn makes the territory more competitive so as to maintain its international financial hub status.

Uhh typical Singaporean, white dog. Yeah giving up your own language and embrace English and let White spit on your face. Great idea. Singaporean dog. Luckily HK is under China, with the great PRC, she will lead HK to more nationalist and patriotic.
superlemon50 2 years ago
Just like Singapore, HK is also a very capitalistic and outcome-driven society. However, the English proficiency level has been declining in HK and the government shouldn't let it happen as this, in a larger sense, will affect the employability of its people. Bilingualism is key, but it's more about achieving effective bilingualism.
jemdude22 4 years ago 2
Thank you so much for sharing your videos. Ethnic communities and new immigrants do play a very important role in our society. 75% of the Chinese population in HK originally came from Mainland China. Most of our parents or grandparents were once new immigrants, so people need to take that into account when we judge others. Also ethnic communities like the Indian community, they have been in Hong Kong possibly longer than most of us Chinese.
Rab1975bit 5 years ago
I'm Chinese living in the UK, I do sometimes get unnecessary shit from white people for no good reason.
People should not be judged by their colours nor their ethnic and social backgrounds. If we don't consider other minorities part of our society. Unless you're native Hong Kong farmers from the countryside, perhaps we shouldn't consider ourselves Hong Kong people either.
Rab1975bit 5 years ago 3
also a chinese in the uk (respect for not saying british-chinese), and i agree with your essay :)
as a mainlander ive faced a lot of discrimination everytime ive been to hk, coming from a multicultural district of my city in china with uyghurs, hui, nigerians, arabs, whites and of course han chinese live in relative unity it was a shock to the system and i still identify more with chinese, flips, indos etc more than hk chinese in hk
qwertytrewqwer 4 years ago 3
I think the longer I live in the West, the more I'm proud to be Chinese, and the more I appreciate other cultures and people. Not generalising, but I think a lot of HKers can be very narrow-minded and ignorant about things they're not interested in. it's hard to have a decent conversation with them about anything important.
Rab1975bit 4 years ago

What's important to them is what new show is going to be on TVB, how cool their phones are, and what Japanese idol is coming over to have a concert in HK (another form of self inflected inferiority that's not much talked about).
christpunchers 2 years ago 2
You're generalising BUT it's pretty true. HongKongers do have an inferiority complex. A lot of them do think anything from Western countries (including Japan) is better. They're not curious enough to learn & they're too scared to be different.
They laugh at & look down on things that they don't understand or never seen before.
With that attitude, HK can never be pioneers, they can only be followers because they trap themselves in a mediocre level by being narrow-minded, ignorant & arrogant.

Educating people especially the young generations really is the way to go. People do need to be educated. The existence of different minorities should be reintroduced to us Chinese. Then we'd know more about their histories and contributions to Hong Kong in order to understand them and accept them.
Rab1975bit 5 years ago
If people don't recognize their existence. Why do you think HK's minorities would want to integrate into our society? We really MUST address important issues like this. It's just ironic to have such a patronizing presenter presenting a program that talks about discrimination against minorities. I can't believe we ignore the fact that people have been discriminated against & we've only just become aware of it. I feel ashamed.
Rab1975bit 5 years ago
I must say the presenter was being a bit of a patronizing knob when he was talking to the female Indian audience who phoned-in. She was saying that her family had been in Hong Kong for three generations. Then the presenter commented how good her Cantonese was by saying " No wonder you speak Cantonese so well". What the fuck was he talking about?! She didn't even have an accent. She's from Hong Kong!
