47f0, you misconstrued the content. You should judge people by their actions, not their race. Tanner was wrong. That being said, Berry is dangerous because she is mixing the issues of race and sexual preference. Hate crimes are wrong and illegal, and there are laws against it already. But abolishing the First Amendment is a dangerous precedent, and you might find yourself on the receiving end of the censorship. You can't legislate away people disagreeing with your sexual preferences... sorry!

A couple of fine, but significant points. 1) "Sexual Preference". It's a foolish term. I'm straight, and I've always, as far as I can remember, known that, like I've always known the color of my eyes. I could no more "prefer" or "choose" to be gay than I could choose to flap my arms and fly. Could you?

That's not how he belittled her. By comparing Berry to an object, he reduced her humanity for ridicule. Throw in the 'black' comment, and you've made it easy to assume racism.

He didn't read all of the E-mail. There was another quote that went something like "She comes off stupid and writes in ebonics". It wasn't really the one comment where he called Barry black that people are pissed about. It's more about the whole context of the E-mails he wrote which, at best, had a distinct racist overtone. Especially for a man in the Civil Rights Division of the D.O.J.

Does the Justice Dept. really need a "civil rights division" anymore? I mean, I'm a libertarian, and if someone owns private business, I say let em be racist.
