We're in a great position to act with low debt, safe banks and social safety net, and I give Harper credit for keeping Canada to healthy. If he does nothing, though, it will prolong Canada's recovery and weaken the country. Stephen Harper is an economist you know that. Plus, you do know that the only way to get our economy going is to get apart in terms of trading from the United States. As long as their economy is bad, ours will be too.

The government should interfere moderately. Canada should not become like the United States where it is basically a fascist state at the moment with them "bailing" out corporations.

No body said that you should run a country like Canada ONLY on the basis of your economics ability. What I noted out is that a person like Harper is more qualified to run a country like Canada with an economics degree. The bureaucracy is the true organization behind all the legislation's enactments, thus leaving little thought for ministers to make their own choices on issues for they are not knowledgeable enough on the issues before them. Agreed ayouraa, The economic down turn, in the states, was due in large part to the lack of federal intervention and the US can thank people like Sen. Phil Gramm and chairmen Alan Greenspan for that. Most American economist agree that the US banking system set them selves up for federal intervention (bail-out) and they're right. pt 1

If anybody bothered to do little research, they would see this in how the bankruptcy laws changed in succession since 2003, in many states, to disabled people from filing chapt 13 which would force banks to renegotiate mortgage contracts. Greenspan's raising the interest rates and people inability to file chapt 13 corralled them into foreclosure which caused the housing to bubble burst not the other way around. There's more to it then this but this is the crux.

I am in that industry and, though I am no economist, I could see the writing on the wall when the American market started to suffer. It is ironic that an "economist" like Harper could not. Our real estate market would have remained in better condition if it were not for Harper's policies.
