  • Its Cannnnnnnnnnnnnnon, shut up and enjoy film riot guys

  • great spelling ryan just amazing

  • its not "cannon" it's "cannnon"

  • How do you film in hd on the lumix i thought i was filming in it but when i imported it to iMovie in came out in standard quality? any help guys?

  • CANNNON

  • The gear lists aren't there anymore D:

  • try filmming with a point and shoot Lumix fz100 :) its possible with the right lighting and noise reduction software check my channel out :)

  • You spelled 'Canon' wrong.

  • Hey what is a good camera I can Get for 5000 to a thousand dollars. Something that is good in low light and as good picture and sound quality.

  • Where did you get those posters?

  • josh is hot!

  • what do you think about the t2i?

  • dude did you take a bottle of speed before shooting this video? slow down! great vid though!

  • u guys misspelled canon on ur video title

    u spelt it cannon

  • Isn't Canon spelt with 1 N not 2?

  • @comsa42 It is deliberated... maybe it is deliberated...

  • Does anyone know if his gear list is still avaliable? and also does he still reply to emails? Anyone who knows the answer to eather of these questions please answer Asap

  • Comment removed

  • I love the way you did the email on this one. Go go FilmRiot marathon!

  • Hey dude, nice t-shirt

  • Can some one tell me why they use these cameras? Don't they only have like 30min of recording time?

Why not get an HD camcorder???

  • @TheLyingMustache They can record for as long as the capacity of card will allow. However, only 12 minutes at a time. People use 5D and other DSLRs, because of the image quality. The image quality of most HD camcorders will not even come close to that of 5D. From my experience, if you want that film look, and if you can't buy RED cameras, 5Ds are probably the best option.

  • I thought I was a beginner film maker; untill I saw your 'Beginner DSRL' lists on Revision 3. How much money do you think I have?!

  • my name is brian lol i made this account a couple days back i geuss i forgot about this email

  • full frame canon is a disadvantage for film makers. get the gh1. none of you are gonna do anything but talk specs anyway. Anyone with any real talent would go with the cheaper less problematic cam and stretch the budget out.

  • FILM RIOT! Can you tell me what is better, canon 600d, canon 60d, or GH1 for filming? Thank you

  • t2i vs hacked gh1

    purely for filmmaking

    who wins

  • reasons I came to this video:

first time - wanted to see the comparison

2nd,3rd, and so on time - the email.

  • can someone hlep.?? i have the ghw camera with a gf1 45-200 stock lens. everytime i hit record the video gets darker and i dont know how to fix that. but if im using my cannon ef 50mm the video brightens when i hit record which i like. do you guys know why the 45-200 lens makes the video darker when record is pressed? also i cant do self videos because i have to stand soo far back. any fix to that?? please help.

  • Which software you use to edit your videos?

  • @SherryProducations he says FCP

  • I was considering of getting a 7D instead because it is cheaper and has that slow mo option as well, however 5D seems to beat the 7D in a few aspects such as the ability to film in low light. What do you think would be better?

  • @bgcorporation get 5d. Only 2 words: Full Frame

  • At 3:57 or so... what lens was on the GH1? Thanks.

  • I think both are good. For me with a small buget and just starting film I think the GH1 is one hell of a deal. With the GH2 out, the GH1 is about 300-500$. I find that one hell of a deal and its hackalbe. I think the 5D is still 2500$ plus the thousands of dollars with lenses

  • canon lenses works on GH1?

  • @NathanCipher I own a Gh1 and i have 2 canon FD lenses with an adapter. When you use anything but a m4/3 mount lens you'll lose auto focus and auto aperature, which makes you need manual on the lens, hence old canon FD lenses. but you can get them on ebay from 30-100$

  • When I read the uploader comments it makes me feel bad about getting a GH1. You make it sound like it's not even an option and that you need 3000 plus dollars to shoot. I've seen the Gh1 mixed with footage from the red and I dont think that anyone would need to spend money on a 5D when there's a GH1

  • How about the GH2?

  • :50

  • fanboy

  • canon with double n?

please change the title of this video!

  • greetings from the old country Ryan,,, great review informative and funny.

  • 0:00

  • I want this camera so much, with a paper round, it may take a while.

  • I watch this video again and again just for that funky e-mail read

  • I have a hacked GH1 and it's a great camera. It really is but if I had the cash I'd pick the 5D over all the other DSLRs any day. Even though the GH cameras might be better on paper of feature-wise, the 5D just creates this unexplainably beautiful look and in the end that is what matters. You can still shoot a great film on any DSLR but if I was to pick I'd certainly go for the 5D.

  • @MateoVegaFilms Spoken like the pros; BLOOM & LAFORET

  • The red one beats everything. Now stop arguing.

  • @UndyingRedemption However, if you bring up the price points. Just for the Red's "brain" it cost more than a 5d and high end lens to go with put together. Might as well throw in a computer & software, and the RED will still cost more!

  • The new Panasonic GH2 blows all these away.

  • haha at 4:08

  • 23.976 Thank you.

  • @Dazify just spend the extra $150 get the latest and greatest in that range it won't dissapoint

  • Hello Ryan, I was wondering, what do you think about the Canon EOS rebel T1i, it shoots 15.5 mega pixels, and its a 750$ DSLR, or do you think i should go for the rebel T2i and spend 899$ for 18 megapixels?

  • 0:50 - 1:07. Absolutely blew my mind haha

  • click this to scip ads 1:00

  • To me it is pretty obvious that the gh13 crushes the canon atm. And with the gh2 coming... ooh smokey

  • how long can i use the 5d on 1080 movie mode and the lumix gh1 ,how long can they take till they over heat

  • @beepsbobby I forgot that i left my gh1 recording and when i came back it had recorded an hour clip which it split into two 30 minute files. ive heard it can do over and hour continuous recordings.

  • You are obviously covertly sponsored by Canon.

  • Can you tell me what the pros and cons of dslr over regular prosumer cameras? ill be buying my first prosumer cam soon, and i cant decide which way to go. im looking at the hmc150. anything i should know about hd prosumer vs hd dslr before i buy?

  • F5 TO SKIP THE ADD!!! LIKE THIS IF I HELPED

  • @Lekopetro F5 to skip ad? cool let me try

  • Yes we know GH-1 hacked produces more detail and is sharper then the 5D, but when you take into account all the other things the 5D begins to stack up, GH-1 just cant cut it. Fact is because GH-1 has a smaller sensor and records on an SD card it produces micro jittery shots as if you were filming on an iphone, 5D has bigger sensor and shoots on CF card, its images arent shaky and and micro jittering, it looks more like a real camcorder.

  • how did you get the film look?

  • what camera do you use to make this show

  • what camera do you use to make this show?

  • hey what camera do you use to film this show?

  • 0:51 - 1:08 THIS IS BRILLIANT.........this is your voice???........how did you make it please tell me

P.S YOU GUYS ROCK (yes i am the guy who says "you guys rock" in every e-mail.....you answear to one of my e-mail i am "THODORIS" i am waiting to hear how are you going to pronounce it in one of your episodes)

  • and like I said please stop mentioning House, etc, this was all prehack, we ALL are in agreement 5d craps on gh1 prehack. But Gh1's better codec puts it right up there with 5d after the hack, the ONLY reason a professional would want 5d for now is live HDMI out, but the hackers that brought us gh13 are hard at work at possible live hdmi for gh1 hack so even that tiny advantage for canon 5d may disappear soon. ofcourse for stills 5dmkii annihilates gh1 but we're talking video only

  • @skyheretic you dont know you dslrs, 5D doesn't get live hdmi out, and if you have ever tried GH-1 hacked in low light it is terrible, looks like a consumer home movie camcorder. Filmmakers need something that is going to shoot low light GH-1 just does not cut it.

  • for the record

gh1: less moire than 5d, less aliasing than 5d, as sharp or sharper (post hack), has articulatable LCD, costs 1/3 price, can shoot 20 hours straight doesn't overheat like 5d,

5d: only advantage is bigger sensor=slightly narrower DoF, and 2. Better low light.

sounds to me like GH1 wins. How much is canon paying you? lol

  • @skyheretic 5D does not have over heating problems damn where do you get your info, please go out and use both cameras before you comment on here, cause your talking threw your behind.

  • whats the song at 5:13 ??

  • Obviously the 5D and GH1 dind´t have comparable lenses. GH1 can be better then 5D for 1/4 the price, plus it has the flexible display much better for shooting video.

  • @iframebrasil I must disagree with you. The GH1 doesn't even come close to the 5D. Which is why you see music videos, tv shows, commercials, and b-cam for feature films being done with the 5D, not the GH1. Check out the season 6 finale of House to see how amazing the 5D really is.

  • @filmriot um actually there are tons of music videos shooting all over on the GH1 and FEATURE FILMS too. i don't see any feature films being shot on the 5dmkii, do you? check the internet, every review so far is boasting how badly the gh13 now destroys canon 5dmkii. point is mk ii has more potential but is badly crippled with problems. plus the canons have a big headstart on gh13 which was mediocre prior to the hack, and the hack only recently came out...now gh13 is blowing 5dmkii away

  • @skyheretic I still have to disagree with you. Even with the hack, I don't think that the GH1 holds a candle to the 5D. The only things I have seen shot on the GH1 are very independent low budget things. The 5D has been used on 24, House, the feature film Red Tails (which is being produced by George Lucas and stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard) and a lot more. I'm not saying the GH1 is a bad camera, but I personally tested them both, and the 5D won by a mile.

  • @filmriot first of all the reason for that is becuase the hack is barely 1 month old. Now there are several features in production on GH1. None on 5d. To my knowledge 5d is not being used on redtails, it was being TESTED there, please show me where you saw confirmation they will actually use shots of it, they aren't. I read philip bloom's blog too, buddy hehe. You tested them both PRE hack so don't say you tested them both and it won by a mile, those that tested POST hack say GH1 wins by a mile

  • @filmriot still.....have you tried the hack? it bumps the bitrate up to almost triple that of the 5D

  • @filmriot yeah but have you tried using the GH1 with the hack? It makes the bitrate almost three times as high as the 5d's.

  • @filmriot what about when you consider the price? with the savings you could buy more lenses, that could improve things like low light ect..

  • @filmriot what about when you consider the price? with the savings you could buy more lenses, that could improve things like low light ect.. Also the GH1 shoots in 422. The 5D in 420. also the GH1 shoots longer without over heating & now with the hack can sshoot higher bit rates too.

  • @filmriot

Actually there are pros and cons to both. Is the hacked GH1 better than the 5DM2? Yes and No. The 5DM2 shoots at 27Mbps. The GH1 unhacked shoots at 17Mbps....a hacked one shoots 40-50Mbps(huge difference). With good lighting, The GH1(3) takes it. Now with Lowlight situations.....5DM2 crushes the GH1(3).

  • @filmriot do the hack, put a pl mount on it and use ultra-primes and you will see they are very close. The 5D MII was used on House because it has more features, is a much more promoted camera, and i believe it was a cross promotion with canon, not necessarily because the final quality is much higher.

  • @filmriot this is really, really late, but how do that aliasing issues compare between these camera's? I'm attracted to the great shallow dof and low light, but am scared to purchase on grounds that rolling shutter and zebra stripes will plague my videos.

any way, love your stuff. You've probably already answered this somewhere, so if you just want to provide a link that'd be great. Have a good one.

  • @filmriot Also stuff for Saturday Night Live. 5d get's a lot of play in the film world. The Gh1 with it's hack to gh13 is very impressive and you can get it for a really low price. Either way you need to get external audio either the juicelink or beachtek. The most important thing is story. I'd rather watch a great story on a crappy cam then a crappy story on a great cam.

  • @filmriot The 5D is just epic there is no getting around it.

  • @punisher666ism so is the GH2 HACKED

  • @skyheretic what the hell are you talking about? you obviously dont know much, Canon 5D is used to film the show 24, Anthony Bourdain, House, all of Jason Derulo's music videos. Philip Bloom is using as B-roll on set over there at Lucas Ranch. Not only that GH-1 is nothing compared to 5D in low light, it doesn't even come close, yeah it may look more sharp and have more detail but when it comes to shooting in low light which is essential to filmmaking, doesn't stand a chance

  • @skyheretic GH13? thought it was GH1? So are you saying you like the Lumix better or the 5D? you seem to go back & fourth?

  • @R2FilmProductions GH13 is the hacked GH1.

  • @iframebrasil the gh1 is not even close to the 500D

  • The groovy voice sang "so here's hoping i see me email on your next show".... the email doesnt say that....

  • @YTviewer118 So? It's still priceless.

  • Ryan, was that a rode videomic on the Canon 5D? If yes, then I think I'm going to buy a Canon 7D. Do you think that it would be a good idea for me to sell my Sony Handycam and buy the 7D?

  • what is the music when it's "and now a word from our sponsors" at 5:19 ?

  • Hey Ry guy Super fly guy, What do you think of the Canon T2i.

  • Hey Ry! i jsut bought a Conon rebel 2ti!!!! thanks alot man :D

  • Great work I am a filmmaker that is really just starting, I have made movies in the past but now I am really trying to do more professional stuff. You guys have helped me more than you can imagine! P.s. Got some new stuff up on my channel I do appreciate views, comments and subscriptioons.

Well anyway, I was pleased to see that you guys have been reviewing DSLR's b/c I have been looking into them for film and hadnt found anywhere else that did comparisons for video over so many brands at once!

  • 2:37 - 2:46 Ha ha

  • Canon DSRL all have Aliasing problems google it and vimeo has a lot of Canon Aliasing videos. Canon is not worth it wait until a new model comes out.

  • @ngvgnDOTcom I would definitely disagree with you there. There is an aliasing problem, but as long as you know about it, you can work around it. The 5D especially gets unmatched image quality for it's price. Check out the season finally of House season 6 to see how amazing the 5D really is. It was also use by the show 24, in Iron Man for effects plates and is being used as a b-cam for a new film from Lucas Film called Red Tails.

  • @filmriot That might be true but your always taking a chance with the aliasing problem and you can never be 100% that you know it's not in the footage.

I know a lot of things that can give Canon aliasing problems and one thing that you will have a hard time looking out for is human hair. Look for this video on vimeo "Panasonic Lumix GH-1 and Canon Eos 550d Quick Test" and look at her hair.

Sony is coming out with a AVCHD body that uses their DSLR lens also known as Minolta.

  • @filmriot could you go over some anti-aliasing techniques or work arouds you have dicovered? -Thanks!

  • Hope the you do a video about the email i sent you to do with horror films. Love the videos they really help

  • Hey Ryan,

I was looking at your Revision 3 deals with

B & H video. I was wondering could you do a webcam event

where the viewers could prepare questions to ask you guys.

I'm a new film maker and have bought the Adobe CS5 Creative Suite.

I'm currently investigating what kind of camcorder or DSLR I should buy. I hope

you do do an event (NPI) to help your viewers out.

    Peace, Ryan.

  • Thanks guys, fun and informative. How can ya beat that? :)

  • hey Ryan, was that you singing that email? Love it!

  • I've been studying your tips and techniques for a while now, and this question occurred to me; How does a director maintain his or her sanity with the complexity of a the details necessary to make a well done film, particularly the big budget ones?

  • Why are you talking about the sensors resolution so much?

  • i seriously love this channel

    keep up the good work

  • Man, i was shopping yesterday for cheap cameras and all i can think about was the EOS 5D which i couldn't afford, hahaha! But great review nonetheless :-) It's $78,000 here. Almost 2500 usd. Were you finally able to get the 7D for testing? Cause the price range for that one is a bit realistic for me. That one is 51,000 here. But now i just can't buy a camera without Ryan's thumbs up, hahaha!

  • You guys should review the Panasonic AG-HMC150 Its looks like a good camera but i dont know. i trust you guys to know if its good or not.

  • @ShadowManV3 The HMC150 is a wonderful camcorder, but lacks the interchangeable lenses of DSLR if you want to achieve very shallow DOF and such. The HMC150 does have very good low light for a camcorder. Not quite 5D Mark II good with a fast lens, but very good. If you want that shallow focus for anything but very close shots using the HMC150 you will need to buy or make a 35mm adapter and get some SLR lenses. You worry less about moire and aliasing with the HMC150, btw.

  • FILM RIOT HAS CHANGED

  • Cats, I find all of this as riveting as most find porn. Ry and the guys do an awesome job! These kind of reviews are great!

  • GH1 Feature Film - I Didn't Come Here To Die:

Shot this back in Noveber in Austin, TX. Sending it out to all the bis film festivals right now. Realize that a horror film might not be everyone's bag on here, but it's a GH1 feature film dammit! Thought you might be interested. Video response doesn't seem to be working, so you can watch the trailer on the website: ididntcomeheretodie [dot] com

Or on my YouTube channel: 235pics

  • @235pics looks nice but you applied noise in post, if you were shooting a regular film where noise wasnt need to make it look like an old film then you would see GH-1 is not that good under low light compared to 5D but i kno you were trying to go for an old movie look so the GH-1 could have been better suited for that project

  • @235pics when can we see it all?

  • @jodorowsky00 Sorry for the response 7 months later, but I just saw it was left. Anyways, we'll be playing a ton of film festivals across the world this September - November. You can follow us on Facebook or Twitter for more updates.

  • What would you guys say contributes the most to how close your videos re to the actual "Hollywood" film look?

color correction, camera quality, lighting or do all three play an equal part?

I do a lot of shorts in my film class and we're really trying to achieve this look more accurately. Thanx.

  • B&H is where I got my camera. Pretty cool to see them as an ad for you guys.

  • hahaha, that email was perfect :D

and was was there a particular song you where making fun of?

  • Where do you guys get all of your money to buy all these great cameras?

    Sheesh.

  • on your website for Traditional beg. the letus ext. has a FD mount, you show only EF lenses. also DO NOT USE EF lenses on a adaptor for traditional non DSLR cause you cant crontrol the F stop without a eos camera body

  • I think it worked out well too.

  • that email at the start was sooooo good, seriously could be my favorite thing ever DO MORE! please.

  • @catsareterrorists Well, if you want to be involved in filmmaking (which is what this show is about) these are important topics. Effects are a very small part and only the "icing on the cake" of filmmaking. As for Full Sail, that will happen soon.

  • what's great about DSLR's, in Canada at least, is that because they are camera's that take video, instead of video cameras that can take pictures, you technically don't need permits because they are not 'video camera's'.

I went to a seminar a few weeks ago at school and apparantly there was a TV station that was not allowed to film the olympics because they lost the filming rights. they shot on 7D's because they are not classified as video cameras. and then filmed it that way.

  • great review and i am so happy you are sponserd by B&H they kick ass

  • I can't wait to get the t2i

it is amazing, and only $800 WOOT WOOT

  • wow you got B&H to sponsor you?!?!?!

  • please do another episode on effects

  • Hey Ryan I love ur videos and every1 is a new expirience 4 me but could u tell me what video editing softwere u use and could u recommend a free one the has all the fetures u use to create ur effects like masking and rotoscope

  • I liked your concise camera reviews and the email song was very funny- brought a smile to my face at 7.30am after changing my daughters diaper! It almost feels odd to have a Film Riot episode without mention of Squarespace and Netflix...I never thought I'd miss adverts, but you guys make such funny ones.

  • I'm loving the look of the 5d shots. I think they shoot the show 24 with Canon DSLR's... really cool.

  • I actually grabbed a bag of Popcorn! :-)

  • For $2,500 for the Canon 5D you might as well up to a RED Scarlet for $3,000 with a 3K resolution (3072x1536) and No 'Jello effect'.

Speaking of dollars check out my claymation 'Another Day, Another Dollar' (which was filmed for $0 at 'WaterFowlStudio' Main Page.

Love FILM RIOT, Great episode! :) Keep em coming

  • @WaterFowlStudio Thanks for the compliments. But, bottom line on the scarlet is that as of right now, it doesn't exist. So in the mean time this is what is available to us. Also, the body alone for the Scarlet will be $3k. By the time you are done buying everything you need to use it, you will be spending closer to $7-$8k... Perhaps more depending on what you want.

  • @filmriot and If I waited for that I wouldn't have made a film for the last 2 years.

  • @WaterFowlStudio That was my friend's thinking as well. Deliberating between getting a 5D or the RED Scarlet. But I'm curious about this 1D Mark IV I've been hearing about.

  • @hogwashsentinel I Just looked at some footage from the 1D Mark IV and It didn't impress me to much at first until I realized what a high dynamic range it has, Looks amazing during sunset. No way I can spend $5,000 bucks on it though.

  • @hogwashsentinel

The 1D Mark IV looks amazing! :)

  • @WaterFowlStudio From what I've seen, the cost of the Scarlet brain only once you factor in everything you will need is supposed to be closer to $7,000+. The fixed lens scarlet will be about $4,750, but of course means no interchangeable lenses that we all love about DSLR.

  • Your funky email read made me almost crap myself. In a good way.

  • I think I love you. But not the way you think. I wanna have sex with you. :-)

Love the sponsor today! I've been a big fan of B&H for a while.

    ~Trav

Question: What are the lines in the intro? I can never understand the sentence after "Wanna be a filmmaker? Well, so do I, let's figure it out!"

  • After the last set of DSLR reviews do you think we can get a short video of the camera footage side by side and labeled? What was the aperture range of the lens that you were using with the 5D too? Thanks, great episode!

  • Hey Ryan, should post links in the description for the things you discussed in the episode.

  • What effects did you use on that groovy song? Free please...my parents have after effects but they are not audio people for some reason...so I have Audacity with VST plugins and Nyquist

  • Groovy email had me in stitches, OMG!!! ;) lol lol lol

  • You do realize that now everyone will be writing groovy emails in hopes of getting them sung on the show, right?

  • u guys also, sing?? that is amaizing

  • that email song was amazing!

  • could someone tell me a great way to reduce grain without having to use a lot of light. i'm shooting a film for my film class and being the amateur i am, i use the monitor to judge the look of my film too much and as a result i don't really notice the grain in the actual footage. i can't remember the name of the camera i'm using, but it's not a typical consumer cam so i know it's capable of good quality.

is it WB, zebra stripes, what fixes it?

  • shave thyself!

  • can you guys explain the rolling banding issue i got when i shot with the nikon d3s. think it has something to do with the iso. check my page for the video

    cheers

    guys
