I got a 5200 when they came out. I am now 43 and bought another one off ebay a couple years ago. I have the trak-ball controller too. It is still my favorite home video game. In fact, I'm gonna go home and play it tonight. + Bongwyre2112 ...I think my weed is in there :)
I never had a problem with the controllers. I never will understand why people hated them so much. I finished Pitfall II the lost caverns with those controllers. No save game, so it was a bitch at points. But in those days a save game was called pausing. 8)
My friend from another high school gave me an Hardware hacking book from 2003 and it had instructions on how to make the 4 port 5200 use just a separate AC and AV cord
"This is the largest game console that I own. And you I have about every game console". Uh Mark, have you heard of Phillips CD-i which is far larger than the PS3 and 5200?
If you want to play 5200 games, do not buy the system...get an Atari 8-bit computer as they are the same or similar hardware and you don't have to deal with the bad controllers.
@TheDeadlyxRocker if it has a coax hookup on the back or where ever it may be on the TV, then it will. If not, then maybe you could find some kind of adapter. I don't think they have these but an RCA to AV adapter would be cool to have.
has great games on the system but too damn bad the controller sucks wrinkly balls obviously whoever work for product design for atari didnt have no idea how to properly design a Joystick and start,Pause and reset buttons
I can say that the 2 controller port model DOESN'T use that STUPID box. I happen to own a 2 controller model, and the RF cable comes from the bottom of the unit and it uses a more standard power supply.
I have a 2 port and oddly enough, it has the same measurements as the 4 port. The good thing is that I don't need the switch box because it actually has a port for the power adapter. Thank goodness I can hook it up like the 7800 and the 2600 but the only problem I am having is the 5200 controllers. Thankfully I am getting them repaired so I will be good to go in a couple of days.
When I bought my 5200 it didn't came with that awfull switchbox because the original owner lost it, so I decided to modify it so that I can use it without the switchbox, it was difficult to find and expensive
@accfandcp Nope. Mark's a heavy game enthusiast who gives serious reviews while adding humour. AVGN is a comedy video in wich he reviews games with a negative tone for comedic pourposes.
There's no simularities really between this video and AVGN's other then they're reviewing the same console. Mark discusses the consoles negatives and pluses and adds a few jokes. AVGN goes through hell trying to set it up, then discovers his controller sucks and he can't replace it.
So my mom gave me 2 Atari 5200's and said I could have whichever one works. The one worked it is fuzzy but still works. The other one is shiny new but there is no plug in for the power plug in the system itself. anyone know anything about this?
@MHeather1976 Yeah I think atari thought they were being innovative at the time my combining wires... its confusing to explain but basically there is a box the 5200 comes with that will attach to the TV for video/audio, on that box is where you plug the AC adapter to...the AVGN has a video on the system and explains it better
The two controller 5200 doesn't work with some games. Obviously not four player games, some might work but only with one or two players. Some games don't work at all on the 2 port because of some design changes.
The 5200 is at its heart an Atari 400 computer. The concept was to make it super easy to port games from Atari's home computers to the 5200.
The reason for the weird interface box was to have the console only require a single cable going around to the back of the TV. It automatically switched the signal from antenna passthrough to the 5200 when the console was turned on. No having to fumble around for that cheesy, cheap switch all other consoles used, which most of the time caused noise in the TV picture.
thats kinda complex for kids, but whats weird is i have a 4 controller model. and it has a power supply and cable supply separate..... maybe mine is rare xD
I just picked one of these up the other day, for $40, with 8 games. I prefer the 7800 or the XE game systems. I'm an Atari fan, and I can't help myself when it comes to these old machines.
The reason it sucked is not only that the controller breaks easily, it's incompatible with the 2600 games and has lame-ass automatic switch box. Even the AVGN said it sucked and it's at number 3 on Gametrailers Top Ten Worst Game Consoles.
The 5200 is strangely attractive. It has a dark sloped and shiny contour marked by deep grills along its top. It was like a DeLorean of the mid-1980s--the design of the future. It has such a dominating presence next to any TV or console. Too bad most can't see one hooked up to their TV.
your 5200 has screwy hookups and i can see why you dont like it. But my non-4 port system doesnt have all that crap and i think its great. Ive always liked it and yes, I think the controllers are real cool, too.
Based on this particular video only..Your game reviews are really good and insightful.. your hand theatrics are ridiculous. Stop with all the hand jive and you'll have a winner,
Look at 4:18 to 4:20. Did anyone else saw a little spark in the connector, like in the AVGN atari 5200 review? Call me crazy, but I think I saw a tiny spark there.
The reason the 5200 joysticks don't self-center is because Atari opted to use RUBBER BANDS for centering, to reduce manufacturing costs. After a year, the rubber bamds would snap, and the joystick wouldn't center.
I bought a 5200 at a yard sale several years ago. Everything had been kind of haphazardly thrown in a big box with several controllers, all of which were in various states of brokenness, but nothing a little tinkering couldn't fix. It also came with a huge stack of games. And I have to say there were some excellent and addictive titles, but the controllers really killed it for me. I ended throwing out the whole lot some time later. In retrospect I wish I had just kept it...
I had a 5200 back in the day (was so stuck on Atari back then that I even got a 7800 after that, but I digress.) I loved it. It was the 2 controller system, so I thankfully didn't have that insane power supply/AV box combo!
Was worth it for me since it had Space Dungeon (along with the neat accessory that locked two controllers together, Robotron style!) and Sega's Star Trek game. I think I got up to level 70 in Space Dungeon before it just got so insanely hard. Thanks 4 the wayback trip!
Two things not mentioned here: Beware of the 2 slot/normal power version as some games do not play on it. Secondly, this console has probably the best sound capabilities of anything produced in the 1980's up to the Sega Genesis. But yeah, the reviewer is right, all the good things about this system are sabotaged by the god awful controllers. Playing Centipede on this thing is impossible with them.
Also, looks like you did nearly the exact review the AVGN did. except with less swear words. I don't think you're ripping of James, the console is just that godawful.
You can plug in the RF unit you showed off earlier into the 5200. The screw terminals on the side look like you can screw it into that box's prongy shaped input..
wait, so you're mad because the power and RF hook up with one cable even though it works? As far as I can tell, your biggest beef with it is that you haven't seen anything else like it. It really does look like it's simple to hook up and use, so simple your mom could do it, so to speak. I don't see a flaw in it, except that it's sort of weird.
@Theriot6592 They arent that big, About as big as a small VCR really. Some models of the CD-i was huge though, needlessly bigger than a laserdisc player.
Sometimes when i got nothing in particular to do and just browse the internet i put some of Marks reviews or random videos to play in the background :-) rather than music.
Like the Angry Video Game Nerd would say..."WHAT THE F*@K WERE THEY THINKING!?"

@TheFlyingJester To keep controllers but they belong in the trash (lame joke but true)

That's weird i was under the impression that the n64 was the first console with four controller ports built in.
DoctorJ1337 1 year ago
wait, so you're mad because the power and RF hook up with one cable even though it works? As far as I can tell, your biggest beef with it is that you haven't seen anything else like it. It really does look like it's simple to hook up and use, so simple your mom could do it, so to speak. I don't see a flaw in it, except that it's sort of weird.

As far as I know the 5200 is one of the most dangerous console
The menu with 10 pages of pluging aren't just for fun :/

I wonder if Mark has a 3DO. My cousin had one and I remember it being huge.

@Theriot6592 They arent that big, About as big as a small VCR really. Some models of the CD-i was huge though, needlessly bigger than a laserdisc player.
