The place I always got stuck wasn't the reaper, but that hallway right before him. All of those medusas plus the axes, it was just madness, and I would stay up for hours on end trying to beat him, just because you didn't want to start over or enter a password, or risk losing what I believe losing my "castlevania instinct." I was so proud of myself when I beat him that I actually made this shitty paper mache trophy to commemorate the day that I beat down the reaper on June 3rd, 1987.

That's EXACTLY how I played that level. He went through the last corridor the same way as I do, and he killed the Grim Reaper the same way I did.

TO ALL THOSE WHO CAN'T BEAT DEATH THIS IS THE EASY WAY The easiest way to beat death is to get the holy water and triple shot, then just before he appears jump and throw the holy water on the right ledge (where he first appears) then simply keep throwing the holy water at the ledge, he won't move or throw sythes. Easy :) I'll post a video if you want to see exactly how it's done. Thumb this up so people can see.

@ben6993 In my opinion, the hardest part is the hallway before Death. I am not completely noob at. Sometimes I fly through it perfect but sometimes it just fucking drives me nuts. I can slowly approach the axe armor whipping him and his axes and sometimes step back to avoid the meduas, but sometimes a weird medusa will force me to jump and he will throw a high axe at the same time and it all goes to fucking hell.

@MajBlood Yeah you know haha I sometimes just run up to the first knight and use holy water, kills them quick, but yeah it's like what AVGN said, you've gotta dodge axes, medusa heads and the knights take about 9 hits to kill. You get hit once then it goes all downhill

Today I DL NES emulator, this game and played it on my good old game pad (no saves! there is none on actual NES). And I must say that this little sonofabitch brought me more fun then all those modern games like Dawn of War 2, Left 4 Dead or Dragon Age. Those old NES games (the good ones :3) are just pure awesome.

The first one did away with that level up shit and is one of the hardest games around. the 2nd one felt like simon's quest getting to explore all around and trek through Romania culminating in a final confrontation with an early risen dracula.

@stormstruck Use the boomerang to kill the axe throwing knights and the medusa heads and they should drop you a double shot and mabye a triple shot. Then throw those things all over the room in the direction of the Grim Reaper and you should be able to beat him. Good luck.

Very nicely done. I never tried the holy water method. Not saying it's cheap or whatever, there aren't any right or wrong ways to beat the game. I always just liked to collect most everything and get as many points as I could in this game and this stage and fighting Death was just brutal. Not so much the end fight, but getting there in one peace to where I could survive a few hits. After PLENTY of attempts basically chucking boomerangs around like a wild man eventually got the job done.

Thanks to the AVGN I became a Castlevania fan after all these years. I played this as a kid, but I always sucked at Castlevania games. :- / I play these classic on emulator without saving. I got my butt kicked many times, but nothing beats the feeling of killing a strong boss after many tries :-) I finally go to the Grim Reaper and I think there will be a lot of blood, sweat and tears until i beat him. 1. I lose my weapons after dying.

2. I can't go back for those weapons.

You should try throwing one boomerang to the left just before the Reaper appears, so it hits him as it flies back to the right. That's generally how I start every time I beat this guy, throw one left then one right (so that one hits him twice and the first one hits him one). Hope that makes sense...

Meh, Castlevania is really just about patterns, and memorizing them. It's like they want you to go a certain way at a certain time, but every now and then there's something totally screwy and random coming out to bite yer ass, I got so pissed at this stage, I didn't have the patience, nor did I care to remember when and where everything popped out haha.

Mega Man games are more my cup of tea. Sure it's all about memorizing patterns too, but also reflexes. Anyway good job with this stage!

Good strategy. I like to get the reaper long jumpin' from the left and right sides of the screen by closing in on him so he'll do a big jump. But this strategy works really well too.

there is a pattern to the psythes it takes precise timing and LOTS of practice, but once you get it down it's really easy to lead the fight and own his ass.
