Phone and data interception have been around for a long while - Echelon is hard wired into the UK phone system. Royal mail post interception was actually built into the system from point of creation. It's good that it's getting more mainstream coverage - what worries me more though is the lack of most peoples outrage.

Anything you do on the internet is generally traceable back to you, in one form or another. When you connect to the internet you are assigned an IP address, which is logged, and extremely traceable. Even routing through a proxy is traceable in most cases.
