trainfann1 , They have the diesel for help for 425. 425 is only a light 4-6-2 " 220,000 Lbs.and she needs the extra help to pull a 16 car train, radder you like it or not. I have seen 425 pull a 14 car train back in the early 1990's when Charlie Kachel was still around. But she also blew a cylinder packing too. which was fixed at Thorpe. The diesel is also used for braking.
Great video Joe. Some major slippage there in Hometown adds some excitement. And she was unusually dirty compared to other trips, but hey that's fine, after all, they're supposed to be dirty, lol.
Nice video. We look forward to each one you upload. Did you start using a different camera or does the 425 not look as blue as in the past? It looks a bit dusty and faded. Maybe just needs a wash or a respray?
Also seems unfair to make it drag that heavy diesel around. 8)
Thanks Joe for this great video. You really captured the trip behind steam and the beautiful fall colors. It pretty much makes mine from on board look like crap. Bruce (papasmurf7597)
JoMiFu , They don't go all the way down to Lehighton, they just go down to the run a round half way down the grade. the next town down would be Packerton then Lehighton.
Great video Joe, I'll be out this weekend, My Mom just came home from having a Heart operation . That's why I wasn't out last weekend.
@bigjim4life technically its not Lehighton, it's Packerton. They cut the steam engine off of the train so they can make room for the diesel to bring the consist down to Packerton, where there is ample space and sidings to move the first class private cars to the other end of the train.
JoMiFu, That's corrected Joe. Half way down around the curve there is a long run around track wich was used back when CP. 972 ran at Jim Thorpe back in the 1980's when Rail Tours Inc. was the rail service for the area. The track that their using is of the ex CNJ and at one time was a two track main with two sidings at the passenger station and three at the freight station that once stood up from the passenger station. It was razed in the early 1970's.
Great video! But does it seem that that the tires on the 425 need replacing? Cause she seems to slip a lot more than usual. And also because this vid is in HD, i didn't notice how dirty she was.
@imagreatbigman The engine and tenders are hand washed before every trip. You cant make (less than good quality paint) look good. As for slipping....ever hear of leaves?
Fantastic catches.

@trainfann1 It's necessary for dynamic braking, additional horsepower, and protection power if needed.

When the 425 pulls away from her train in Jim Thorpe and goes further down the line - where is it going?
bigjim4life 1 year ago
@bigjim4life - going down to Lehighton to do switching for the return trip.

i didn't know what this whistle was until another youtube member told me. That whistle is a Southern Pacific 5-chime step top whistle.
