Physically, Graf did face big problems as well such as her known knee and lower back injuries which kept reoccuring during the 90s. As for the stabbing, thank God Seles wasn't harmed worse, but the legendary swimmer Alexander Popov, was stabbed and had damage to his kidneys, and membranes of his LUNGS (big swimming tool), yet he came back within months, determined, focused on fitness, and won the 1997 Euro Championships.
Seles did get stabbed, which was horrible and interrupted the Graf-Seles legendary rivalry, but Graf had a list of huge personal problems off the court as well - things that were in her family, which is supposed to be a home and sanctuary. As for Seles, many say that when she came back she had the choice to go for it and make fitness a part of her tennis game, but she didn't. She continued her ways from her early career - which was never doing anything besides tennis.
To say that Graf's slams will always be controversial is a joke and is sick. There is no idea like that in most people's minds because Graf achieved her slams fair and square. She did it while Seles was in her prime (before stabbing) and she did it when Seles came back, she did it when the women's tennis game hit its peak in ability (early 90s-1996), and she did it when there were different eras of players, and she did it when there became too much racquet technology.
Monica Seles, the most dominant player until that awful day in Germany when she was brutally stabbed by a Steffi Graf fan and would never be the same player again...this is why it is offensive when some people say that Graf is the best player of all time and those same people (the media) then say well maybe she isn't because Seles was stabbed and opened the door for Steffi and her 22 slams will always be controversial...No kidding
am i the only one that thinks the technique of both players are bad. maybe its cuz thier beyond my time, and i never got a chance to like these two. but steffi with her slice backhands have no variety, and her forehands looks kinda too loopy. and monica with her two handed forehand??, is she naturally a righty but plays lefty or something, cuz herd about nadal starting like that too.
Do you prefer the standard women tennis of today big forehand and tho-handed backhand? It seems like all women tennis came out from one factory. I Prefer women tennis in the 90's. Henin was the only player that was different but she retired. Each match between Steffi and Monica was a big drama ... In my opinion "modern" women tennis is boring ...
I agree, the Sabatini = elegant strokes, Arantxa = ran down EVERY ball, Novotna = served and volley, Martina (early 90s) =need I say anything. Today they are all the same (Henin back is the only odd one out) single forehand, double backhands
Steffi's technique is flawless..and Monica's 2 hands were incredible and precise...players these days have no technique...but the raquets help them hit hard even though they miss the sweetspot 50% of the time...the quality in women's tennis has gone down big time...and everyone is a clone...boring boring boring....
@11wogboy she actually can, she just prefered her slice which became a great weapon later in her career. she would still hit some great topspin passes from her backhand if she had to
do you think women have better skills nowadays??? they just hit the ball as hard as they can looking for the winner in the first shot; I think in tennis you have to think and prepare the point before the winner...
@talco23 i never said they had better skills or more fun to watch . im just talking abou how the strokes techniques look. and i did say maybe since it was beyond my time, it looks funny to me. ppl back in the day swung way different than today. and many modern players will agree that the old swing style is weird looking
What began as a media stunt, a "gruntometer" recording Seles's decibels, had serious overtones. The French player, Nathalie Tauziat, raised the matter of Seles's grunting after losing to her in the quarter-finals, and Martina Navratilova complained to the umpire about it during the semi- final. Seles made a conscious effort to curb herself in the final. "I just thought hopefully I can start [not grunting] somewhere, so I started here," she said afterwards.
i've checked your so-called proof, one title from one paper. i've googled it times and times again and hadn't found a *single* record that mention graf threatening to complain if seles grunts. one headline doesn't prove anything, headlines are meant to be scandalous, it's what in the article itself that matters. if graf truely made these "threats", i'm pretty sure i could have found it somewhere - which i couldn't. please prove me wrong.
seles never made errors like this before she was stabbed you never saw her hit a ball into the net she just didint do it,she was only a shadow of her former self after the stabbing.
her new book details y she was heavy and unfit. her double handed game needed the precise footwork to get to the ball.. we all know that... and her fitness and weight was kiling her
i just wish she was losing in the 1st round all the time then she may have done something about the weight and her demons about eating.
Its the fact that she was winning in this condition and taking the top players close that she may have been content with the weight... she just looks too heavy here
i think that she never made being fit her top priority during her tennis career but focused on perfecting her technic instead. even in her early days she never had the "figure" (like graf, for example), but her weight was managable and she was able to play her superb tennis. at the point when she was really gaining to much weight, bcz it was never a priority for her, she probably didn't know how to "maintain" it, and it started to have its effect on her game... it's a shame.
but in her book she details that she would do like "6hr grulling sessions in the gym" then have 6,000 calorie binge sessions alone.
its a shame for her because the stabbing was out of her hands,,, but the weight issue was in her destiny. but she was deprressed and looked at food for comfort... a real shame
she did threaten to complain about it before their match at wimb in 92 thats why seles didnt grunt cheap tactic by graf to get an edge and win the match.
please get your facts straight before spreading your bs around. it's true that some players complained about the grunting, one of them was navratilova who was desperate to win against seles in their SF meeting, and she also made these comments again after she lost the match, thus causing the media frenzy over it, which caused seles to try and hold it back in the finals. Graf had nothing to do with it.
You don't have to like Graf, but don't try to tarnish her just bcz you wanted seles to win.
u are in loser denial i have posted video proof showing newspaper headlines showing graf threatening to complain before the match if seles grunts u fool, just type in seles 93 interview and you will see the proof.
im a big seles fan but admire good tennis like graf, and i have never heard graf complain about the grunt... she may have said something about it after being posed a question, u know how the journalists are like...
What a big load of massive bullshit. But who else than someone naming himself after an ice skater would come up with a Kerrigan-Harding theory. How ridiculous. Yes, the Tennis world would have been different if Monica had not been stabbed but it would not have taken away Steffi's status as one of the best ever.

2 great champions, but the whole grunting thing makes me laugh.
Like, the grunters always say it's not the grunting that makes them win, but the second they have to pipe down then it's the reason they lost.
At the end of the day, nobody minds a bit of a grunt, but when it's OTT you should be able to just win. End of.

@11wogboy search for steffi backhand topspin here on youtube and you will find perfectly executed backhand topspins
she used it mostly for passing shots though, cause her backhand slice used to be more consistent and had more depth to it

And what makes you conclude she "can't actually"?
Steffi can do a lot of things your brother didn't watch that day ...

With this win, in 2 weeks span she had beaten Hingis, Davenport, Novotna and Seles, who I think were all ranked top 5 at the time.
