that friggin opening in the guardrail. after blaine you think they'd have fixed that. everytime I watch this I wish someone could have radioed Al after Oswald went up in smoke. Not like Al would have lifted...I miss what NHRA used to be.
Just to clear things up, Al didn't die as a result of this crash. In fact, he lived another eleven years before dying of a heart attack in an RV park in Florida in 2008, seven days before this video was uploaded. :)
I was there, it was horrendous. I was in the pits when they brought back what was left of the car, and I've never seen a funny car come back in such bad shape. It was bad enough that he was on fire, but the real clincher was that rollover. It must have been spectacular to see, but the smoke was obscuring it.

We lived in Eustis then and we were at this race. My son, Jeremy, who was 12 then, called your grandads house to see if he was ok.. R.I.P. Al

Great vid. I was just getting into the sport about this time. I miss how outspoken and short Al's interviews were.

Raymond, we all miss your grandpa, the NHRA sorely misses a racer like he was.
On another note, tell your mom Nick & Annie said hi!

I remember watching this for the first time as it aired. It was one of the worst Funny Car crashes I had ever seen!
