@BlindedSamurai You know in one of your older posts you said that one of the worst things you can do as a martial artist is underestimate your opponent, and you seem to be doing just that right now. Most people who carry firearms concealed legally often have to have a great deal of training and practice at drawing and firing from concealment to get a carry permit. Also, at the ranges we are talking about I can shoot you center mass by point shooting or from the hip quite easily.
@jason200912 Being under immense pressure and everything happens within a matter of seconds only makes matters worse for the shooter. Let's assume you hit the target, GREAT! But was it a one hit kill? Was it a head shot? Probability says; Unlikely.
Normal human reflexes would kick in, thus you'd enter a state of what we call "instinct shooting." You're no longer aiming, and more spraying and praying. Point is- It's a good idea to be just all around well versed in all forms of fighting.

This kid only wants to share the best of him to everyone, and thats an amazing thing.
Traditional techniques would never have the swordsman turn the saya before the draw. That signals to their enemy what direction they plan on attacking from. The saya is always kept in the same position and rotated when the blade is approximately 10cm from exiting the saya.
This "deep horse" stance is just ludicrous. In all variations of Iai training, between 70% and 80% of your weight should be on the front leg in all but a handful of postures.
"If you were attacking me, (swing), That would be the last thing you would see."
Are you f***ing kidding me? That was one of the slowest strikes I've ever seen. The whole point of Iai-do (The art of fighting from the draw) is to use the resistance of the saya to increase the speed and power of the cut. The fact that I could follow the blade through the air and count the time it took to complete the cut should say something about the quality of his training...
A silly boy playing with what he believes is correct technique! One you never touch the blade, iaito or not it should always be respected as shinken. Two you always start any draw the same way any change in angle is done once you are into the draw not at the start! Is this where we as martial artists have got too, Disney club instructors teching mickey mouse techniques!
I used to think only old white men in their 40's and sporting half a beer gut and wearing over sized Japanese uniforms were the source of phony martial arts instructions...ahhh how time has proven me wrong.
I am by no means an expert, but I truly believe one should not handle a katana, especially a live one, without the proper instruction from a sensei. Reasons:
1. Without proper advice, you will most likely injure yourself.
2. Without proper instruction, you disrespect the essence of the sword, and look ridiculous yourself.
I think that you've missed the thousands of years when sword was just a tool to cut your enemy. Unless you're from Japan of course. Knights in medieval ages didn't care about stuff like 'essence' of the sword. They cared about themselves and used them. Later, a rapier wasn't treated like a person or what-not either. I am sure that a master at proper use of katana could be still a master without all this 'traditional stuff' going on. It's just the fancy surrounding, you know..
@Panczekolada Since feudal Japan, the katana was treated as the warrior's 'soul'. Not all arts have the 'fancy' stuff like this one. Also, becoming a 'master' at the 'proper' use of the katana requires a lot of practice and one ends up respecting the katana as a weapon that can kill. This video is the same as some redneck shooting a shotgun randomly while somersaulting. Ask any weapons expert and will tell you never to mess around carelessly with a dangerous weapon. I have Japanese roots, btw.
Just the thing that there are more deadly weapons, like rapier, that did not have all the focus on the sword itself but the user. It's all the mindset and tradition following that martial art.
@donbasuradenuevo As an American, I appologize for what my people have done to your herritage. I hope you believe me when I say that there are some of us who still respect that culture, and those who gave their lives to build it.
@bnomiddlenamej Thanks for your words! You made my day. What I respect about the American spirit is the openness to take the best of the world and apply it to make a better society. In reality, Japan would never have been what is today without the US and their spirit of democracy and liberty, say whatever people might say. I shudder at the thought of a communist and oppressive Japan.
@Panczekolada The roots of many koryu schools were developed not by scholars but by the blood of samurai, The reason why respect plays such a part is something that I believe has been lost by western minds!
In another hand, that movements wants to be pretty movements, not to hurt someone, the posture and the sword grabbing not help. You havent any guard stance, and i see you have the precision and concentration capability of a piece of wood. I recomend you to make aclarations about the content of the videos when you do it. In all case you must say: Katana handle for open forms. Because that is your area. If you dont do it people will think you are a faker.
I have no doubt about you are a nice "open forms maker". Now, in terms of traditional martial arts, REAL martial arts: your posture, your sword grabbing and handle are really deficient. First of all, a real standard katana is heavier than your toy weapon, you can´t handle it like a wood or fantasy weapon. A true japanese sword is very sharp too, in my perspective i think you want to mutilate your fingers and ears.
Musashi said start taking blade out, and once its about 5/8'ths of the way out, about 18" or so than you twist to the side. But Im sure its all about how you learn.
These videos are in the "so bad they're great" category. I've been watching all of them: The fat guy with long hair, the skinny dude with the beard, and this guy. I know it's all crap. I happen to be a Karate instructor myself, and nearly all of this stuff is garbage, but I can't look away. These guys are like the Martial Arts equivalent of the Jersey Shore.
@orangekush3 I agree, the katana was work with the blade facing up in its saya. However when the warrior was armored he was often carry the blade face down as this, and this makes sense if you think about if for a moment, allows for a wider draw-cut arc.
@TheUsrper1 tachi(the long sword)was used before the edo period (samurais were using the katana by then). and yes, the tachi was carried blade facing downwards, but not for quick drawing, more for traditional reasons. "wider draw cut arc" there is no such thing, tachis are heavy to swing in the first place. Earlier warriors carried the sword blade downwards because it was a different kind of sword. In this vid the guy is using a katana, not a tachi, so he should draw de sword correctly thats all
hi this is Dylan continueing my comment I am 15 years old and my real dad died in a war for japan after a few days of my birth.I dont remember what he looks like and I found this out about my real dad not even a day ago.No wonder I am good with sharp objects.OH! and I learned all my moves that I know now thanks to you guys at expertvillage and the guy named trace in the video.Oh and if you are reading this message first read the one under it that way the story goes in order. Please respond.Dylan
hey expertvillage this is Dylan from the U.S.A I have a question when the samuirai does the scabber draw like trace did did he push the blade the full length of his thumb like samuirais do in anime shows I was wondering that becouse I thuoght it would make the scabber draw more quick and effective OH! I also learned from your website how to shuffle pocker cards and it was fun.OH! my real dad was a samuirai for japan and I am a full blood americanI will continue on the next comment box..dont go
@PalomboDylan The sword is locked tightly in its scabbard as the little metal bit that sticks out from the tsuba hand guard onto the blade (the seppa)sits snugly inside the metal top of the scabbard or habbaki. If the sword has not been drawn for a while it could rust and jam up...pushing it free with your thumb just checks you are free to draw very fast. It is for safety, you dont want your sword flying out of its scabbard and cutting some random person because you trip over!!
Your being laughed at by the modern samurai in this world my friend. I would suggest you go take some kendo, kenjitsu or iajitsu classes before you try and teach the sword on your own. The sword isn't a weapon, it's an art.
He's making the Katana a practical weapon, instead of an art. Because he doesn't do like the traditional masters of Japan doesn't mean he couldn't use it effectively in combat.
No chiburi? Incorrect Noto... didn't your sensei teach you that you never touch the blade to prevent contamination or foreign particles from getting in the saya?
Also, the Katana is worn blade up and you never "flip it over" as that can cause the katana to be dulled. Someone please take these series of videos from "Expert"village down...
I've never taken a Iaido or Kenjutsu class and I know this
how would it be the last thing we see?we could block run our katana up his and cut right across his chest.then dead.it's that simple and don't take martial arts.i will though.i will
I hope nobody actually tries to learn these techniques... At 1:18 after slicing downwards, you can see the handle going almost past his forearm! I can't believe this guy has the nerve to upload these videos. But then again, it might not be his fault if his "sensei" was a fake. I really feel sorry for you.
Its called shikodachi stance not horse stance at black belt you should know your terminology thats a white belt stance too you really should know that I would like to know who your main instructor is at your dojo could take some lessons from my sensei
wait, when would anyone every be suddenly attacked out of no where by a samurai????? i figured this was for like kendo or something. silly me for not knowing there are deadly samurais around us...........
@gearsfan165 There are. Except these ones use lightsabers instead of katanas and have body armor made of a weaved kevlar. That's why it's so important that everyone learn how to use a razor sharp longsword and draw it quickly to slash the lightsaber-wielding samurai as their armor will stop most non-AP bullets and they'll just slice your sword up before you can use it with their glowy lightsabers if you're not fast enough.
Our first hint that he doesn't have a clue is the phrase "katana sword". Next he'll be showing us how to use a machine-gun ... gun. This shit is laughable, but what would you expect from a bunch of know nothing jesus freaks?
@MrMZaccone Katana in itself is generally an incorrect term. It is not a specific term as it only referred to single edged curved blade. Basically he would be making a new video on how to use a gun gun as it was that general a word.
@MrMZaccone No it doesn't. Today maybe it does because of western influences and the need to classify swords based on size. But in the original context, katana only referred to a single edged sword with a curved blade. It didn't matter whether it was native or foreign as long as it had 1 edge and the blade was curved it was a katana regardless of size, material, origin, etc.
@mauiboynokaoi "Original context" ... So for some reason you want to discuss what the word meant back in the 14th or 15th century? ... "Today maybe it does" ... There's no maybe about it.
@MrMZaccone There is a maybe just like there's a maybe as to whether irregardless is a word and whether the words won't, can't, etc. when used in a sentence such as "Won't you take out the trash?" (lit. Will not you take out the trash) are grammatically correct. When it comes to languages there are no "correct" terms. Only accepted terms. When a term is accepted in more than one way, they are both correct. Technically speaking, the term katana used today is incorrect but contextually it's OK
Sahm (Tres name in Korean) eye's were all over the place in all of his videos, and not where he should be focussing them. I cringed with each attempt at tameshigiri (if it could be even called that) he attempted, I thought he was going to cut up his left hand each time. No Tsuba? Must be a characteristic trait of shinkens used in Tres-Tew-Won Ryu Kenjutsu.
I noticed that he looked down at the katana while he was sheathing.
Iaido teaches not to watch the katana while returning it to the saya (scabbard for you posers). You'll break metsuke which is too keep your eyes alert, up ahead and at your opponent.
That's like the first thing you learn. Anyway it's just a demo video. I'm sure he knows better (yeah right). But it's bad for the dojo if you slack off, even while demonstrating. It shows the quality of their art.
I'm very sorry to have to say this but this is to be seen often, when total beginers try to act like pros. this is just a series to show all who want to practice traditional iai and Ken justsu how it is not to be done.
Please search for a good master.
Anyway what grade is this guy not even wearing a gi and hakama?
@Rael0505 I hope you're not sticking up for this guy... This is pseudo martial arts that is so modern it has lost much of the core of what it was. My opinion of this "martial artist" is on par with the one in Napoleon Dynamite.
Interesting. I just watched something that pointed out a flaw in what I noticed you doing. In the downward strike, you fully extend your arm in front of your face before you bring it down, obstructing your view for an instant. To help with this, bring your sheath up higher before you draw it, and pull it down when your sword is halfway out. That way you can draw just as fast, and still keep your vision unobstructed.
Going into a karate stance with a sword means you're eventually going to cut off your own foot...or your opponent will do it for you. There's a reason you don't see iaijutsu or kenjutsu practitioners "going into a deep horse stance" against an opponent, whether real or imaginary...their opponents don't stand still waiting to be killed(?) with poorly executed strikes.
@orangekush3 you dont turn it upside down. you turn it on the side. and if you just drew it like that you would screw up without drawing it or you would draw it and just hit them with the side of the blade. not a good idea
BTW I don't know if anyone knows specifically, but Yeshua or Yashua is Hebrew for Jesus. I don't know if I'd trust the integrity of a sword program that I could learn at Jesus Ryu school.
In response to what the Tres said at the end of the video.
No...the last thing YOU would see is your stomach lying a few inches from your face...Any draw which doesn't follow the direction of the cut is too slow to fend off a surprise attack.
Yes, he's an idiot! Just put a bokken in my hand and I'll knock the nonsence out of his thick head. Heck, I've only been doing Jodo one year but I bet I could still beat him with a walking stick!
1. You have no idea what you're talking about, whether you're aware of this I'm not sure.
2. I've been doing kendo for nine years and Iaito for three years, I'm only seventeen. Yeshua-do/ Yeshua Ryu are faux martial arts. Put me in front of any of their practitioners and I'll cut them down.
3. He's not a master, he's an American idiot with a sword which if used against a real kenshi may as well be a feather duster.
2 doesnt matter what u do or how long u trained cause i seen people that claim to train for a long time still suck an if u cant back it up then its ur own down fall
If you had any idea how hard it is to become sandan at 17 you'd shut up. Seeing as how you are totally clueless and know nothing about kendo I assume you're going to continue.
I wouldn't say what I just typed to his face for no reason. I would tell him to practice real martial arts, if he refused then and there I would then say all that shit to his face.
Your grasp of English is questionable, sorry if I've left any ambiguity.
I'd like to become assassin if i can , i'm 15 age now , i must try to do something like fighting because I live Malaysia , people were fuckin disturbing at me around my school -.- !
doesn't it mess up his draw when his whole hand is pressed against the tsuba? it should have that space between his index finger and his thumb down a bit more, lke almost an inch from the tsuba.
I have seen some of your other vids on here. I would like to know what style of Japanese swordsmaenship you have been studying but i can say you can not even hold the katana right. Before you ask I have been studying Eishin-Ryu and Toyama-Ryu for 10 years now and never have i seen such bad teachings. You may be skilled in other arts but your skill in japanese sword Is the worst I have ever seen sorry.
Useful iaido for attacker upon unsuspecting victim, for actual combat, both will have sword already out in a kamae, I think that's the name, position. Excellent video dude!

dlsrb1415 10 months ago
Traditional techniques would never have the swordsman turn the saya before the draw. That signals to their enemy what direction they plan on attacking from. The saya is always kept in the same position and rotated when the blade is approximately 10cm from exiting the saya.
This "deep horse" stance is just ludicrous. In all variations of Iai training, between 70% and 80% of your weight should be on the front leg in all but a handful of postures.
onotadaki 10 months ago
Would you treat a Colt Single Action Army as he treats a sword? Of course not! You would end up losing much more than a finger or two.
donbasuradenuevo 11 months ago
"If you were attacking me, (swing), That would be the last thing you would see."
Are you f***ing kidding me? That was one of the slowest strikes I've ever seen. The whole point of Iai-do (The art of fighting from the draw) is to use the resistance of the saya to increase the speed and power of the cut. The fact that I could follow the blade through the air and count the time it took to complete the cut should say something about the quality of his training...
bnomiddlenamej 11 months ago
A silly boy playing with what he believes is correct technique! One you never touch the blade, iaito or not it should always be respected as shinken. Two you always start any draw the same way any change in angle is done once you are into the draw not at the start! Is this where we as martial artists have got too, Disney club instructors teching mickey mouse techniques!

Please take this video with a grain of salt.
donbasuradenuevo 1 year ago
@donbasuradenuevo
Panczekolada 1 year ago
@Panczekolada Since feudal Japan, the katana was treated as the warrior's 'soul'. Not all arts have the 'fancy' stuff like this one. Also, becoming a 'master' at the 'proper' use of the katana requires a lot of practice and one ends up respecting the katana as a weapon that can kill. This video is the same as some redneck shooting a shotgun randomly while somersaulting. Ask any weapons expert and will tell you never to mess around carelessly with a dangerous weapon. I have Japanese roots, btw.
donbasuradenuevo 1 year ago
@donbasuradenuevo
Just the thing that there are more deadly weapons, like rapier, that did not have all the focus on the sword itself but the user. It's all the mindset and tradition following that martial art.
Panczekolada 1 year ago
@donbasuradenuevo As an American, I appologize for what my people have done to your herritage. I hope you believe me when I say that there are some of us who still respect that culture, and those who gave their lives to build it.
bnomiddlenamej 11 months ago
@bnomiddlenamej Thanks for your words! You made my day. What I respect about the American spirit is the openness to take the best of the world and apply it to make a better society. In reality, Japan would never have been what is today without the US and their spirit of democracy and liberty, say whatever people might say. I shudder at the thought of a communist and oppressive Japan.
donbasuradenuevo 11 months ago
@donbasuradenuevo i don't know. deeply ingrained bigotry looks like it was going pretty strong before you lost the war.
all the americans really did was point out that if you want to fight to the bitter end then you might actually lose
ucihapokujin 10 months ago
@Panczekolada The roots of many koryu schools were developed not by scholars but by the blood of samurai, The reason why respect plays such a part is something that I believe has been lost by western minds!

One more thing: The day when you think in use a real Katana, i recomend you to NOT REMOVE THE TSUBA if you dont want to lose a half hand.
sxav212 1 year ago
Be responsible with your publications.
sxav212 1 year ago
In another hand, that movements wants to be pretty movements, not to hurt someone, the posture and the sword grabbing not help. You havent any guard stance, and i see you have the precision and concentration capability of a piece of wood. I recomend you to make aclarations about the content of the videos when you do it. In all case you must say: Katana handle for open forms. Because that is your area. If you dont do it people will think you are a faker.
sxav212 1 year ago
I have no doubt about you are a nice "open forms maker". Now, in terms of traditional martial arts, REAL martial arts: your posture, your sword grabbing and handle are really deficient. First of all, a real standard katana is heavier than your toy weapon, you can´t handle it like a wood or fantasy weapon. A true japanese sword is very sharp too, in my perspective i think you want to mutilate your fingers and ears.
sxav212 1 year ago

@orangekush3 I agree, the katana was work with the blade facing up in its saya. However when the warrior was armored he was often carry the blade face down as this, and this makes sense if you think about if for a moment, allows for a wider draw-cut arc.
TheUsrper1 1 year ago
@TheUsrper1 tachi(the long sword)was used before the edo period (samurais were using the katana by then). and yes, the tachi was carried blade facing downwards, but not for quick drawing, more for traditional reasons. "wider draw cut arc" there is no such thing, tachis are heavy to swing in the first place. Earlier warriors carried the sword blade downwards because it was a different kind of sword. In this vid the guy is using a katana, not a tachi, so he should draw de sword correctly thats all

hey expertvillage this is Dylan from the U.S.A I have a question when the samuirai does the scabber draw like trace did did he push the blade the full length of his thumb like samuirais do in anime shows I was wondering that becouse I thuoght it would make the scabber draw more quick and effective OH! I also learned from your website how to shuffle pocker cards and it was fun.OH! my real dad was a samuirai for japan and I am a full blood americanI will continue on the next comment box..dont go
PalomboDylan 1 year ago
@PalomboDylan The sword is locked tightly in its scabbard as the little metal bit that sticks out from the tsuba hand guard onto the blade (the seppa)sits snugly inside the metal top of the scabbard or habbaki. If the sword has not been drawn for a while it could rust and jam up...pushing it free with your thumb just checks you are free to draw very fast. It is for safety, you dont want your sword flying out of its scabbard and cutting some random person because you trip over!!

gearsfan165 1 year ago
@gearsfan165 There are. Except these ones use lightsabers instead of katanas and have body armor made of a weaved kevlar. That's why it's so important that everyone learn how to use a razor sharp longsword and draw it quickly to slash the lightsaber-wielding samurai as their armor will stop most non-AP bullets and they'll just slice your sword up before you can use it with their glowy lightsabers if you're not fast enough.
mauiboynokaoi 1 year ago
Our first hint that he doesn't have a clue is the phrase "katana sword". Next he'll be showing us how to use a machine-gun ... gun. This shit is laughable, but what would you expect from a bunch of know nothing jesus freaks?
MrMZaccone 1 year ago
@MrMZaccone Katana in itself is generally an incorrect term. It is not a specific term as it only referred to single edged curved blade. Basically he would be making a new video on how to use a gun gun as it was that general a word.
mauiboynokaoi 1 year ago
@mauiboynokaoi Katana refers to a sword of a particular length.
MrMZaccone 1 year ago
@MrMZaccone No it doesn't. Today maybe it does because of western influences and the need to classify swords based on size. But in the original context, katana only referred to a single edged sword with a curved blade. It didn't matter whether it was native or foreign as long as it had 1 edge and the blade was curved it was a katana regardless of size, material, origin, etc.
mauiboynokaoi 1 year ago
@mauiboynokaoi "Original context" ... So for some reason you want to discuss what the word meant back in the 14th or 15th century? ... "Today maybe it does" ... There's no maybe about it.
MrMZaccone 1 year ago
@MrMZaccone There is a maybe just like there's a maybe as to whether irregardless is a word and whether the words won't, can't, etc. when used in a sentence such as "Won't you take out the trash?" (lit. Will not you take out the trash) are grammatically correct. When it comes to languages there are no "correct" terms. Only accepted terms. When a term is accepted in more than one way, they are both correct. Technically speaking, the term katana used today is incorrect but contextually it's OK

It shows the quality of their art.

blah1752 1 year ago
Interesting. I just watched something that pointed out a flaw in what I noticed you doing. In the downward strike, you fully extend your arm in front of your face before you bring it down, obstructing your view for an instant. To help with this, bring your sheath up higher before you draw it, and pull it down when your sword is halfway out. That way you can draw just as fast, and still keep your vision unobstructed.
Juno36 1 year ago
Going into a karate stance with a sword means you're eventually going to cut off your own foot...or your opponent will do it for you. There's a reason you don't see iaijutsu or kenjutsu practitioners "going into a deep horse stance" against an opponent, whether real or imaginary...their opponents don't stand still waiting to be killed(?) with poorly executed strikes.
tourette065 1 year ago
@orangekush3 you dont turn it upside down. you turn it on the side. and if you just drew it like that you would screw up without drawing it or you would draw it and just hit them with the side of the blade. not a good idea
