I remember lockpicking top level locks (all barrels down) with no security upgrades whatsoever right at beginning of the game without any cheats. Just regular picks. Went to cool places very early this way.

My trick was to lift the barrels up and wait for the fastest drop. You clic on the next lift at peak position. Needed timing but worked well.

Unless you are in the Thieves Guild, you are screwed, but if you are, then do this:

Run on top of a house.

Try to avoid the guards long enough to get to a Thief, and have them pay off your bounty.

Run into the wilderness and don't stop until they stop following you.

After a while, if you get far enough away, you will no longer be in combat and will have escaped.

Or you could just pay your fine like anybody else. It's way easier.

@I3dUtul Best way is if you're in the Thieves Guild, go to the Waterfront to the dude with the torch (can't remember his name for the life of me) and you can pay of your bounty there for half of what the guards would make you pay.

Well it'd be nice to experiment with it if there were any damn lockpicks. Where the hell are they? Cant buy them anywhere. I find mine by searching every crate, sack, unlocked chests, etc. Everything is locked in this game, so why would they make it such a pain trying to find lockpicks?

After 40 hours of playing Oblivion I can pick any very hard lock without breaking single lockpick. At zero security skill. All it takes is some pattern recognition and right timing. They somewhat fixed this in Fallout 3 and New Vegas where lock picking is still very easy but you have to pass skill check to even attempt lock. 25 for easy, 50 for average, 75 for hard and 100 for very hard. Pretty crude way of forcing players to invest into a skill but it worked.

For hard locks, there actually is a certain rhythm to them. I haven't tested it with other difficulties, but when I played this game I could 9/10 times pick a hard lock on my first try while trying each pin only once.

Okay, the pick has to make a clicking noise "doo" and then a higher-pitched, short "dee", and then you lock it into place if it does not make that dee sound, then it's no bueno.

lockpicking is fucking difficult, even sometimes when its just on hard or normal, its still hard as hell. i have like 20 lockpicks or something, then i try open a hard lock, and i manage the first one, but not the second one, then i try again and i manage second one, and im like: "oh, so you push it like 2 times then press x, k cool, i get this." then i fail all the time on the rest, and lose all my lockpicks, and i get extremely confused.... >:(

I made a really simple mod in my copy of Oblivion that changes the sound to something more obvious (edited the double pin sound to a much higher pitch so you can clearly hear the difference). Maybe I should just release it?

But even before I made that mod, I did notice the different noise (after a few months upon buying the game) signalling that the pick will be successful. Been relying on the noise for a few years, I actually had better chances at lockpicking if I do it with my eyes closed!
