thank fuck for the modern availabilty of video. this poor bugger would've wound up being just one in a long line of explained-away "tragedies" if it wasn't for video on the ground.
put it back up to these surveillance freaks-if you've nothing to hide, why be afraid of a camera??
I'm sure the shirt Ian's wearing is a Millwall fan's shirt. As he was not part of, or near the protest, did this provoke the attack on him?
I know the above sounds sick, but what happened to him was sicker, but it's not uncommon to be struck for no reason by a copper in the world of football fans
I'm a bit hazy as I just woke up. Plenty of info about. A middle-aged newsagent who worked locally, just local enough to get caught in by the barricades. Police generally move like this when theres a World Summit in town and dignitaries that dont want to meet protestors.
this has obviously pissed evry1 off that has watched it... i cant play any of the videos of this assult so i cant realy comment all i no is police hit a fairly old man causing him to have a heart attack... now if i was to hit an old man with a stik and he died later that day id be put up for murder?? so whats going to happen to this sick excuse for a police officer??
great video, if you need any help getting your video/channel exposed i use a site called mytubeviews . com It has helped 5 of my videos get ranked on the first pages.
In reference to Ian Tomlinson dying , Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, Peter Smyth, injury from police action is the fault of anyone who receives it because they were there. He said to the press that sometimes it isn't clear, as a police officer, who is a protester I know it's a generalisation, but anybody in that part of the town at that time, the assumption would be that they are part of the protest. I accept that's perhaps not a clever assumption but it's a natural one.
alternativegem, could you or anyone else cite a source for that?
I realise Youtube has problems with allowing hyperlinks in on occassion.
Loathe as I am to quote the Daily Mail theres an article by James Chapman (11 March 2009) stating 1 in 50 UK cops have spent or unspent criminal convictions. The headline to look for is "On duty: 1,000 police officers found guilty of crimes"
Photographer Anna Branthwaite said that she saw Mr Tomlinson being manhandled by police prior to the filmed incident as he tried to cross a police cordon on his way home from work. She said that he was shoved to the ground and struck twice with a baton, before being picked up by the officer and pushed along the street.
Ms Branthwaite, 26, says she then saw the officer strike Mr Tomlinson with his baton twice on the torso or upper legs. Ian was scrambling to get up and was half up when the same police officer grabbed him again and threw him forward. He took a couple of steps forward, stumbling, and started trying to run away. He was in total shock.
Anna Branthwaite, a freelance photographer, said: He grabbed his back and charged him and threw him forward. Ian landed on his left side and bounced because of the force of the impact. He looked absolutely petrified. Clearly had no idea what was happening.
This was not Police. This was a Special Forces takedown. The POTUS is in town. An example had to be made. The English SAS is "up for it". England shows it can compete with the best in Death Squads.
scaryxpuppy - he didn't follow orders right? therefore it gives someone the right to beat him to the floor? If you don't wish people to take your comments as a judgement you shouldn't really suggest that you can offer comments on what his family might say to him. Oh by the way "community work" comment also misguided judgement - people who don't reach your perfect standards don't work in finance?
Oh dear. I don't think I ever suggested that "(i don't) wish people to take (my) comments as judgement", event though offering feelings and thoughts if i were in his family's shoes is far from being judgmental. In no way do i dispute your feelings and concerns in this case, but would only suggest that you try and remain open to views in what is still very much an "open book". I have just read that 14 police officers have been hospitalised after these disturbances. Shame, i guess.
Just appears a little insulting , should the family be looking on, to suggest that he shouldn't be " drifting along like a snail" infront of the police, when you sit infront of your computer tapping on the keyboard. 14 police getting paid to do..? one off duty citizen trying to walk home? which part exactly is his fault again please grace us with your wisdom, oh just a reminder highly visable, armed and in majority at that point in relations to un armed hands in pockets ( really provocative? )
Scaryxpuppy is worried that this guy damaged police property i.e. truncheon and I can guess that he/she also thinks that he should be arrested for vagrancy because he was obviously from the 'poorer classes' and therefore has no right to exist let alone walk in front of policemen.. We all apologise to Scaryperson for damaging his/her sensibilities and I'm sure the deceased would like to to the same if only he could.
scaryxpuppy - I work with plenty of people that operate in what I guess you would describe as a "subnormal" way. To judge without an understanding as to this guy's mental and functional ability in relation to your own, is misguided. We still don't know, but it has been suggested that he'd been hit earlier and therefore could be disoriented. Would it help you to find empathy, if this guy had been disabled or educationally subnormal? Where is serve and protect here?
I don't think it is a question of having to empathise with Mr Tomlinson, or throw into the melting pot various "we don't know yet" scenarios which may only serve to guide people down a certain avenue of thought. I also fail to see how i have "judge(d) without an understanding as to this guys mental......." and see you response as quite shallow and defensive. Do continue your admirable community work.
f his family have any questions following his death, one of them also has to be "what the hell were you doing there, you fool!" - sad as his death is, and even though the police conduct may seem overly heavy-handed, my lingering memories of this will be, "what a foolish man!", puting himself in a situation with no thought of his family at all. RIP.

"Posing no apparent threat" . . . .Maybe, but what in god's name is a seemingly perfectly innocent man wandering like a snail in front of a riot police cordon..?? I can't imagine him not being told to move along on many an occasion, and his apparent "hands in pocket" bravado, just makes him a target, legitimate or not for response.
I think you'll find that he was walking HOME. He had already tried another way but was told by police to take an alternative route. He did so, came across these officers and was turned around again! So he began to walk away when he was violently assaulted for no legitimate reason. That police officer is a disgrace and should be punished.
You seem very knowledgeable on events surrounding this clip, too which I owe you a debt. If you do have any audio transcripts, could you post them so all can have a better understanding of the scenarios surrounding this incident.
Are we heading towards a police state? And what are these goons doing wasting our money by bailing out the banks that bakrupt everyone one. If any one is to be allowed to go bank rupt it should be the banks. I they really want to bail out someone then forgive the debt people owe on their houses. This is sick

55. I agree with you. I think they should look at his boss too. The senior management of the police have created this climate which allows this.
