This is a beautiful version of my favorite (albeit overplayed) hornpipe. What are the chances that you have a CD? I would love to listen to your music when I'm not on youtube.
THank you for playing this. I play the same tune on the mandolin. Do you have any advice? I have to play it soon at school and I'm stuck with those triple notes in rows... You know?
AKA Cork Hornpipe. I really like this one. Damn you're good. Have collected all your lessons and a key of D whistle and now just have to find a quiet, empty place so I can learn how to play the thing. Went to the music store to buy the whistle - llke $13 - but walked out with a new mandolin, too. You're a bad influence Mr. Duns! :)
I've been following your excellent online tutorials since July of this year when I first purchased my FEADOG D whistle. I've progressed to playing Harvest Home (badly) and I am having difficulty hearing whether you tongue or roll on the double A's in the last half of the tune. Also how do you get the tune to "swing" in that "I must to get up and dance" way?
@Celticarchie1 It's a hornpipe. That swinging feel is characteristic of hornpipes (But also depends on the player. some players will play it less swingy).
To play like that, it's listening and practice. Why listening? Nobody will be able to describe to you how to 'swing', and also no musical notes can tell you how to 'swing'; we all have our own ways of describing many Irish folk music techniques, and so the best way is to listen.
However, I'll also take the liberty to say that it is important to listen to old masters. They are the ones who epitomized Irish folk music.
Remember: Irish folk music was passed down to us from masters who are unfortunately, no longer with us. Much of the modern, contemporary Irtrad (Irish traditional) music is arranged, prim-and-proper and nice, but lacks the very essence of great, rough traditional folk music that the greats have given to us.
@prier4french The body is easy to get; Generation Nickel Eb.
The head is more difficult to get, however. The head is from Ryan's own O'Riordian C whistle. Patrick O'Riordan had reportedly had a long waiting list, stopped taking new orders as he was/is retiring and his whistles are very expensive; I cn't give you a figure. However, I've heard he have taken new orders.
wow!...that was amazing!....this is by far my favorite hornpipe....i did a recording of this as well....would you please tell me what you think, i know it isn't nearly as impressive of your playing though.
Very pleasant; the bent notes add a certain 'verve' to the performance. ;) I only dabble at the pennywhistle, but your performance makes me rethink my approach (I have some nice 'Clarke' instruments that are sadly neglected).
(I play a number of hornpipes & reels, including this one on the panpipes, even though they aren't terribly idiomatic for the instrument.)
hey ryan hope you like my video response, i think its a different version of what you play, thers a few tunes in there i picked up from james galways greatest hits, hope you can correct me with the names.. lol thanks mate
You have such a facility with this instrument! I find it both inspiring and intimidating - like when I was young and saw a virtuoso guitarist play, and wasn't sure I could pick my guitar up again. Nonetheless, I really appreciate these videos (especially the tutorials), because after three years of fiddling around with the whistle, I'm just starting to sort of get it.
now thats a god giving talant !

Thank you for replying to my question.
Of course you are right; listening and hours of practice are the only way to progress.
It can be frustrating trying to master a tune, but the effort is worth it for the feeling of joy that I get when even a small part of a tune works.
Thanks again
