Hughie's solo is pretty decent but I think Rickey's solo is weak to poor. And Ed King did play the solo on this song. Also, there is no existing live recording of Comin' Home with Ronnie. If it was ever played live it would have been back before Skynyrd's first lp, before Al Kooper "discovered" them. This is probably my favorite Skynyrd song. It's haunting and sad. Just an incredible song.
Gotta be one of my favorite Skynyrd songs ever. Could have sworn that was Ed King on this one, but not according the vid poster's "line-up" remarks, though. I can't still seem to find a live vid on Comin' Home with Ronnie and the original line-up, though :(
On the back of “Street Survivors” MCA released an album of unreleased recordings from 1970 – 1972 packaged as “First and Last”. It went platinum too. The album contained previously unreleased songs and B sides, such as the beautiful “Comin’ Home” a song recorded years before. As was typical of most of the songs on the album, the very early incarnation of the Skynyrd band recorded most of the material. On Comin’ Home, Ed King recorded the slide overdubs in 1975, GENIOUS the guitar moans
At the same time LS was SOOO good back then. And are still better now than many bands, so that is where they are coming from the That is to say, you cant compare
them then to now, cause even now... they are still equal to the average touring band.
they were just GODS THEN.... thats the comparison there isnt one
The music of LYNYRD SKYNYRD is one of those rare things in life that always seems like an old friend. As special as the whole of the band was, Ed King's guitar work in the original band and the first album by the "new" was actually the defiinng sound of the band in my opinion still some of the best music ever made
@MrSammyDjr very true very well said, the best ever recorded, they captured a musical genious in tow and didnt even realize it, at the time, ronnies story telling lyric and Eds Strat, bringing you home, everytime you hear it you go back home, thank you God for Mr ronnie Vanzant and Mr Ed King. Yes there is no telling "what steve would have done". But what we DO KNOW is what Ed actually did, he put lynard skynard in the commercial format we all enjoy today. He deserves more credit by everyone
@flooringalabama Its always band BS, that kills creativity. every time politics and money emotions and WIVES, in thierr husbands ears, Yea Dale that includes you. I grew up2 doors down from all the Vanzants. I graduated with Jonnie. Hughie was never a member of the band. Leon was fired, (lol) every other day. I'd seen him walk in front of my home though every other day. It's ashame, This is what started Southern Rock and today< "No More". All usic today is studio produced crap. This band was Original, and the Best. I bet NO ONE knows what the song FreeBird was about?. Freebird was about the death of Dwaine Alman of the Alman brother's.
think Teresa Gains Rapp also has some pull, if there something she really wants, lets you know how powerful widow women are. They have 100% of the P$%^& and 100% of the money as my daddy used to say
Oh your right they are drawing down 500K to per show now,
they are considerered one of the top grossing acts and

I would love to see the over produced crap playing these days even come remotely close to sounding this awesome live! I am 33 and wish I was born about 20 years sooner. The music back in the day rocked! I can only hope it will swing back to stuff like this in my lifetime. But no, our generation will be known for Beiber! sigh
it's nice to see Ricky take so much pride in playing Allan's solo's, and he does them so perfect. I sure hope God doesn't call any more of them home any time soon. Ahh, I was at this show!! My first Skynyrd concert, as a matter of fact. This was a kick-ass show too. I just learned several days ago that Billy died in January, and just a few minutes ago that Hughie died last month. The Southern Rock world, and I will never be the same without that amazing guitarist and piano playing Skynyrd ORIGIONAL band member. Rest in peace brothers, we will greatly miss you....
sounds to me more like quality of recording plus this was about the time he quit trying to sound like Ronnie & started bringing more of himself into performances.
I seen Kid Rock and the Skynyrd Tribute Band July 26 in Charlotte, NC, and it was awesome.I did not know that Hughie had passed on till I seen this. I missed that. Some info......
Bristow is the home of Nissan Pavilion, which has become DC's summer concert venue much as Merriwether Post used to be.
It is amazingly proximate to several Civil War battles, including both Battles of Manassas and skirmishes that have now been lost geographically due to the sprawl of DC. Very appropriate.....
BTW, what I luv more is watching Billy Powell - we lost him now and w/out his piano there would be major pieces missing in the completeness of the music.
I just gotta say Billy Powell on piano in this song is incredible. they remake this one quite well. one of my 5 favorite Skynyrd tunes. just awesome thanx.....
Skynard,Blackfoot,Outlaws,,,,,,and so many bands stuck together through good and bad, and sad. What they did is show how much their music has. I just think it is so fucking great seeing young people today trying to keep it alive. Never let southern rock die!!!
i love this song. i listened to it in iraq all the time. it reminded me of the streets of iraq and being in the infrantry. thank you americas greatest band ever!!!!!
yes Billy was an original band member. he started out as a roadie for the band and Ronnie heard him play Freebird on the piano one day and the rest is beautiful music history.
sorry didnt know you meant the singer. No Johnny is not orginal singer hes Ronnies younger brother. Check out Vicious Cycle great CD, Band got back together in mid 80s as a tribute and have been rocking on ever since. Technically there are 2 originals left although Ricky Melocke left to form Blackfoot before the first album. He was a member during the Hell House days
allright, that's what i thought,it's a really good band with lots of good music, too bad that most of the originals died in that plane crash... that is what i have heard they died from, pls correct me if i'm wrong
You know what? Johnnie sounds more like Ronnie than Jimmie or Donnie either one. Johnnie was asked by the remainder of the original lineup to replace Ronnie only for the tribute tour in the 80's. They did not expect it to be for this long. The fans have spoken loudly and repeatedly that we like Johnnie singin' the classics as well as the new songs. Too bad that Leon passed away, Artimus had his falling out, and Ed King lost his life, but remember one thing. Skynyrd still puts out great songs.
I love Johnny but you can hear him struggling with the vocals on this song. He always sounds much better on his own/newer Skynyrd tunes. These old songs were not written for him.
there's no point in arguing with Fullhousefreak2007 Let him ramble on in his padded cell with his designer straitjacket. The two phases of Skynyrd are both great and no true fan would start a youtube argunent about it.
nope I know my kinda music, I don't need assholes telling me that the RVZ era is the best version cuz to me JVZ era is the best Skynyrd, I'm smart. I know good music when I hear it.
Your a idiot. How the hell are you going to say Jonny Van Zant is better than Ronnie? What next? Jimmie is better than Ronnie too? Yeah right. Go look up their cuz Jimmie Van Zant. He's better than Jonny is. He has the look and the voice.
without JVZ there would be no new generation of Skynyrd, and this band is the best band there is, JVZ kicks ass and I'm glad that he's doin this for Ronnie.
uhh Jimmy Van Zant totally sucks, I don't like him I have no respect for him, so without Johnny, there would be no Skynyrd, Johnny is Ronnie's younger brother, now if you wanna have somebody that sounds like Ronnie, lets try Donnie, Donnie is alot more better than there so called cousin Jimmy. But if I had to choose, it would be Johnny.
No Jimmie def. does not suck. I am aware that Jonny is Ronnies brother. Considering I have everything skynyrd every put out including their box sets. I have a skynyrd tat on my left arm. I have all their auto bios. Donnie is alright, I don't think he has to sound to do skynyrd tho. I seen Jonnys sknyrd twice last year, and Donnies 38 Special twice last year. Still Jimmie is better. Ronnie will always be the heart and soul for skynyrd.
if Johnny dies or decides to retire, than Donnie will take his place but Johnny is way better than there cousin Jimmy, in fact he's not as famous Ronnie, Donnie or Johnny, so in my opinion, Johnny is better, I don't give a shit that you have box sets of Skynyrd or a tattoo of them on your arm, big deal, I know music when I hear it and Johnny is better than Jimmy.
I like to feel sexy....knowing someone is watching me ..wanting me...turns me on!BADLY! I like to flirt and pose..and sometimes i like to get WILD! how? ..he he..come in video and youll see:-)) maybe u can teach me something..or maybe i will ! come visit me at MeetYourFling (.COM) my user-id there is cherry-wofg chat soon on cam :-) ilmxlnjn
Tiiluu, I agree it isn't the same without Ronnie, Allen, Steve, Leon, on and on. But, at the same time I appreciate Johnny and all who are left who revived the group and kept Southern Rock alive, there isn't many of those bands left and we need to support those that are. Looking forward to their concert one week from today!
I agree with your comment on nearly all your points, but I think that the new line up is going wrong. I can't put my finger on it but it just dosen't sound right any more and Kid Rock should just do away.
Toss up between Skynyrd and the Allman Bros. Just about every other Southern band was a derivative of one or the other. Not to say there werent others that were great, just that there were 2 So Rock waves, post-Allman in early 70s, post-Skynyrd in late 70s.
The guy who played the drums on the original recording of this tune is Ricky Medlock, the same guy who plays the first full solo on this performance, on the Explorer. He was the original drummer for the band. Bit o' trivia.

God damn...
When they show Gary's fingers during the solo before the end...
Despite his old age, he's ridiculously accurate in his playing... it's so smooth I was left with my jaw open...
So accurate, smooth, and full of emotion.
He is the best.

Dont you mean Bristol VA?
hatehildog 2 years ago 2
He is correct Bristow is an unincorporated town in Prince William County, Virginia. Bristol is southern Virginia
biolectron 2 years ago 2
Bristow is the home of Nissan Pavilion, which has become DC's summer concert venue much as Merriwether Post used to be.
It is amazingly proximate to several Civil War battles, including both Battles of Manassas and skirmishes that have now been lost geographically due to the sprawl of DC. Very appropriate.....
BTW, what I luv more is watching Billy Powell - we lost him now and w/out his piano there would be major pieces missing in the completeness of the music.
GrnEyed81 2 years ago
It's pretty much on top of the Bristow Station batlefield. Not one of Hill's better days.

Never let southern rock die!!!

this wasn't the original band members, was it?
bAIRSOFTGUYd 3 years ago
yes Billy was an original band member. he started out as a roadie for the band and Ronnie heard him play Freebird on the piano one day and the rest is beautiful music history.
rebnbobbi 3 years ago
ok,i dont know that much about lynyrd skynyrd, but i didn't think this was the original singer
bAIRSOFTGUYd 3 years ago
sorry didnt know you meant the singer. He was a member during the Hell House days
rebnbobbi 3 years ago
allright, that's what i thought,it's a really good band with lots of good music, too bad that most of the originals died in that plane crash... that is what i have heard they died from, pls correct me if i'm wrong

Ed King lost his life?
Where do people get this shit?
At least Gary and Leon still managed to conjured up images of the OLD band in this video.

Ed King is alive. I met him at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. Really great guy.

Skynyrd still puts out great songs.
br883 3 years ago
I love Johnny but you can hear him struggling with the vocals on this song. He always sounds much better on his own/newer Skynyrd tunes. These old songs were not written for him.
txlastrebel 3 years ago 2
there's no point in arguing with Fullhousefreak2007 Let him ramble on in his padded cell with his designer straitjacket. The two phases of Skynyrd are both great and no true fan would start a youtube argunent about it.

fullhousefreak......ur a dumbass
toothmaker22000 3 years ago 5
nope I know my kinda music, I don't need assholes telling me that the RVZ era is the best version cuz to me JVZ era is the best Skynyrd, I'm smart. I know good music when I hear it.
Fullhousefreak2007 3 years ago
Your a idiot. How the hell are you going to say Jonny Van Zant is better than Ronnie? What next? Jimmie is better than Ronnie too? Yeah right. Go look up their cuz Jimmie Van Zant. He's better than Jonny is. He has the look and the voice.
sgwrestler11 3 years ago
without JVZ there would be no new generation of Skynyrd, and this band is the best band there is, JVZ kicks ass and I'm glad that he's doin this for Ronnie.
Fullhousefreak2007 3 years ago
omg for the last time yes their would be look up jimmie van zant its their cuz hes better than jonny is and looks just like ronnie
sgwrestler11 3 years ago
uhh Jimmy Van Zant totally sucks, I don't like him I have no respect for him, so without Johnny, there would be no Skynyrd, Johnny is Ronnie's younger brother, now if you wanna have somebody that sounds like Ronnie, lets try Donnie, Donnie is alot more better than there so called cousin Jimmy. But if I had to choose, it would be Johnny.
Fullhousefreak2007 3 years ago
No Jimmie def. does not suck. I am aware that Jonny is Ronnies brother. Considering I have everything skynyrd every put out including their box sets. I have a skynyrd tat on my left arm. I have all their auto bios. Donnie is alright, I don't think he has to sound to do skynyrd tho. I seen Jonnys sknyrd twice last year, and Donnies 38 Special twice last year. Still Jimmie is better. Ronnie will always be the heart and soul for skynyrd.
sgwrestler11 3 years ago
if Johnny dies or decides to retire, than Donnie will take his place but Johnny is way better than there cousin Jimmy, in fact he's not as famous Ronnie, Donnie or Johnny, so in my opinion, Johnny is better, I don't give a shit that you have box sets of Skynyrd or a tattoo of them on your arm, big deal, I know music when I hear it and Johnny is better than Jimmy.
Fullhousefreak2007 3 years ago
I like Johnnie and Donnie, but neither of them have the talent or charisma that Ronnie had, tho no fault of their own.

yeah the new Skynyrd to me is the original band, not the Ronnie Van Zant era, but they aren't good, this Skynyrd has more power.

to me I think the new Skynyrd is better than the original.

Vocals are just too dry--need some reverb. Otherwise, he does pretty good.
kapacon 3 years ago
johnny's voice just cant do ronnie's voice on this one, he can usually do a fantastic job, but this is outta his leage (my opinion)
wareaglebabe11 3 years ago
yea
its just not the right voice for the song
no one can do it better than Ronnie
guitarshredda2 3 years ago
its such a gr8 song too, his voice jst isnt high enough. maybe back in the 80s he could
wareaglebabe11 3 years ago
yeah he definetley would do it better in the 80's
guitarshredda2 3 years ago
he rreally didnt have a better voice, just different, much higher.

CatNika 3 years ago 3
I agree with your comment on nearly all your points, but I think that the new line up is going wrong. I can't put my finger on it but it just dosen't sound right any more and Kid Rock should just do away.

The Best Southern Rock band ever...
ShreddedSociety 3 years ago 3
Toss up between Skynyrd and the Allman Bros. Just about every other Southern band was a derivative of one or the other. Not to say there werent others that were great, just that there were 2 So Rock waves, post-Allman in early 70s, post-Skynyrd in late 70s.
skankspankr 3 years ago
The guy who played the drums on the original recording of this tune is Ricky Medlock, the same guy who plays the first full solo on this performance, on the Explorer. He was the original drummer for the band. Bit o' trivia.
