  • Anyone who likes this should look up videos of Shawn Lane.

  • jake is a monster

  • no hat

  • I'll admit I'm not an expert guitar player, so I don't have much authority here. But I think Jake does an amazing job in all of the styles they play--rock, blues, jazz, metal, bluegrass, funk... He's got great technical skill, feel, and style in his playing. Thanks Jake!

  • Probably the most underrated guitarist of all time

  • we are both from the same town. for once, I am proud to be from Niles, Michigan

  • stfu crowd!

  • jake's a god , nothin else to say !

  • It hurts nipples how hard he makes them.

  • @Javas987 he made mine so hard they fell right off !

  • dont get me wrong guitarists like govan are sick. some of the most technicaly skilled players out there. but i cant seem to get into it. personally i think the best solos come out of the moment of a song. david gilmour never had to shred to have an amazing solo. he could play 8 notes and blow your mind.

  • @Billabong368 Cinninger is able to play a very melodic and tasteful solo in comparison to many other technical guitarists. I find that he is one of the few learned guitarists along with others such as Satriani that are able to maintain a very bluesy foundation while being able to take an "educated" solo.

  • its all about the moment in time, I could not agree more, oh EVH use to fall down stairs on his axe and land on his feet, most all your solos are played with feel not completely wrote out in musical notation! Good Point I agree! Still jake is a monster player!

  • @Billabong368 absolutely bro, that is why i'm an eternal Brendan fan. songs from older women, that album has those moments your speaking of. after 1999 when the got jake...my interest kinda faded.

  • no one can say this man is the best, hes talented but ive met enough guitarist of equal prowess, plus guthrie govan blows him away

  • I wouldn't say Cinninger is the best. However I have seen Umph play about 4 times and he has never ceased to amaze. Not just his, but this BANDS versatiliy you just don't come by these days. They do metal that;s actual tasteful, some crazy bluegrass licks, jazz AND complicated fusion stuff alike. There is something in his playing for everyone. I you dont like him at all, just listen to some more of his stuff. This band is soooo talented. Give them they chance they have earned.

  • quite ridiculous

  • u guys must smoke crack or sum shit. y do ppl go to umphreys shows...hmm idk to have a sick time and hear good improv jams, good dancing, good ppl, and sick trip music

  • lol jake overrated... come on man get real

  • Who are those, your neighbor, your crack dealer and your momma's pimp? LOL Holdsworth is primarily a jazz guitarist, Jake is a rocker... buy a dictionary and learn the difference, dumbass.

  • obviously you know nothing about guitar, holdsworth is fusion player, and extremeley original, im sorry this solo sounds like its something ripped of a malmsteen song, broaden your horizons, ive listened to umph for years, so check out some other players with more originality and talent, why dont you check out stanley jordan and shut the fuck up.

  • Oh, wittle baby wants to fight the war of labels! ROFL Fusion, not jazz, eh? Wow. You got me there ROFL

I listened to Stanley Jordan in 1980something, when your momma was still working street corners for crack and your dad wasn't even her client yet. You seem to be one of those bozos who claim how Hendrix's technique was nothing special and he was overrated, too... because you're too dumb to get that technique is not the most important aspect of rock playing, and certainly does not imply talent.

  • your just mad because your hero is nothing special, and iim pretty sure im a lot older than you are you little spitfuck, so do yourself a favor and broaden your horizons

  • and when did i say anything about technique over feel or phrasing, obviously you have a very small brain, and probably never touched a stringed instrument in your life, so at least know what your talking about

  • Listen, sociopath: go build a shrine to your favorite guitarists or get a life. By the number of your sex-obsessed references, I estimate you're a mid-western dick with no balls to come out of the closet, so go drown your fat-drenched brain in more burgers and fries and assorted fusion that entirely different from jazz ROFL. Jake is appreciated for a reason and if that frustrates you, consider jumping off a building - the world would be a better place without a puddle of vomit like you.

  • you are clearly referring to yourself bro, youre the one making the sex references and crack references, look in the mirror you miserable bastard, all i said is that jake is overrated and thats my opinion, it doesnt mean you have to go make sexual references about yourself.

  • and why do you like crack so much? are you a whitney houston fan or something?

  • hendrix was good but is overrated. he was amazing in the 70's. but not compared to todays accomplished guitarists. hendrix was sloppy and not too great. he didnt really wander too much out of the pentatonic. if your gonna talk about the best guitarist from that period you gotta go with frank zappa. and i agree that technique isnt the most important aspect of rock playing. but the person with technique is definetly gonna have an edge over someone with little to no technique.

  • Well, not really - I've heard Voodoo Chile by Vai, Malmsten & Satriani, and it was one of the most excruciatingly boring experiences I know of, all technique notwithstanding; SRV's or Jimi's version beats them to pulp. Either way - there has never been a "best", be it in the 70s or now, even looking for "best" is silly. Personally, of the 70s' rock, I favor Fripp and maybe Steve Howe. Zappa, Schmappa, I'd rather play like K. Richards - Frank was TRULY boredom incarnate and quite lame.

  • yeah and voodoo chile is not a vai, malmsteen, or satch song so its obviously not gonna be better than the original. and srv and hendrix were blues guitarists the others traditionally arent(not saying they cant). and wow. i cannot believe you could say that about zappa. he was sooooo ahead of his time its rediculous. and frank zappa is the type of music you actually have to sit down and listen to because the music isnt centered around the guitar...unlike hendrix where it is guitar.

  • So it comes to where it began, to taste. Zappa's "big thing" was odd meters, which for me, familiar with Bulgarian/Macedonian music is "so what, children dance to that," but his music is so ridiculously boring (with some great exceptions); a note from B.B.King has more heart, soul & emotion than Zappa's entire opus. FOR ME, mind you. Technique has its place, but it's not the most important - just ask Keith :) How's, e.g., Crosstown Traffic, with no solo, guitar-centered? Little Wing? Watchtower?

  • ok im not talking about solos. crosstown traffic. theres 3 people in the experience. its gonna be centered around guitar if hendrix is playing. if there were more people in the experience then you could argue that its not centered around guitar. and once again hendrix didnt stray out of the pentatonic too much. and odd meters take alot more talent to incorporate into music whereas the pentatonic is the first scale you learn on guitar. gimme a break.

  • and little wing is definetly centered around guitar. you can hear of jazz sax players, jazz flute players, jazz guitar players. but you only hear about blues guitarists you know? like show me a blues flutist. a blues keys player. theyre not recognized...why? because blues is centered around the guitar. hendrix generally played blues.

  • obviously you are stupid fuck if you dont think jake will rip anyone up in the guitar hes got more talent than any other guitarist ive seen in a while and hes young as fuck so stop sucking dick and stop hatin on jake bitch

  • youre just mad because you know your hero isnt as good as YOU think he is. i could name 100 off the top of my head that are younger and way more versatile and overrall better than he is, now i like jake and umphreys but ive listened to them for years and ive discovered there is a lot more out there man thats all im sayin.

  • lol thanks Jake!

  • This guy seems like he could probably rip on a few paul gilbert or yngwie tunes

  • yea but the difference between him and those guys are the improvisational piece, he never plays the same solo it always changes and hes got a lot more soul

  • goosebumps... every time.

  • another graduate of The Thor von Clemson Advanced Fast-Hand Finger Wizard Master Class

  • Dude, I can tell it's Jake from the first note. He definitely has a destinctive sound. He's fantasic, and so is Bayliss. UM is an amazing band!

  • Trey is more fun to listen to...and stylistically more original but Jake is technically a much much better guitar player than trey.

  • YES SIR, AND I AM A PHAN

  • yngwie malmsteen is technically AMAZING but it is not at all enjoyable to listen to him because he plays for himself...not to make art. i really dont get why people go to umphreys shows

  • To escape being around assholes like you

  • really??? that's pretty lame.....there has got to be a better reason than that to go to an umphrey's show

  • jake cinninger is the devil. no human could possibly play like he does. the mind-numbing part is somehow he manages to get better every single time i see these guys play.

  • @thewilken lol, check out Allan Holdsworth, he's the devil

  • @thewilken 100% agreed.......every Umphrey's show ive seen is that much better than the one before......just when i thought couldn't get any better, explore new ground, new sounds, and just blow my freaking mind........it happens

  • @thewilken lol i mean if he's the devil then Vai is god.

  • @thewilken bayliss has really been stepping up his game on guitar as well. i've noticed there'll be cinniger shows and bayliss shows. and they honestly both impress the hell out of me

  • from a technical standpoint, jake is the better guitarist. trey simply cant play as fast as jake nor does he know as many techniques as jake.

from a compositional standpoint, trey is the better guitarist. his music is far more complex and diverse than jake's.

who you feel is better is a very subjective argument and depends on what qualities you consider make a guitarist good.

and fuck yeah im in high school

  • well if you think that he isnt as good see him in ten years like i said and then see whos is better im not saying either guitar player isnt good theyre both amazing and i think tanmaniam had a good point i really dont know whos better im a drummer all i no is kris myers rapes he is fricken amzing. but again i dunno whos better its hard to tell im sure jake is better at some things and trey is better at other things but i dont listen to phish as much so yeaaa

  • Haha, Jake Cinninnger, Trey Anistasio, and Herman Lee in the same argument?..

  • hahaha trey isnt much better maybe better but he is also like 10 years older so when jake is 10 years older he will proly better and jake can shit on herman lee Jake = great herman lee is afwul Umphreys rulesssssssss

  • This guy's better than Trey...

  • 1) the crowd sucks

    2) no soul

    3) fast doesn't mean shit

    4) trey's better

  • You may prefer Trey's musicianship, and the majority of listeners may agree with you, but he is not a better guitarist. This piece may not be soulful, but don't discredit this guy. He is more than capable as both a guitarist and musician.

  • I agree with you. Trey is a versatile and very good guitarist. But Jake is perhaps the best young player out there right now and certainly a lot better than Trey!

  • Trey is no where near as good as this guy! Go see them live. He is perhaps the best young guitar player on the planet!

  • bro, I've seen him live multiple times. And once again, Jake is no where near as good as Trey. Fast doesn't mean shit. You're in high school aren't you?

  • I will give you this; Trey is much more versatile and plays with more feeling and soul. But Jake is a much better GUITAR player than Trey! I've seen them both. And I'm 45 - maybe you're the one in high school...

  • He never went to ND

  • he graduated from there.

  • Only Brendan, Joel, Ryan, and Mirro graduated from ND. I dont believe Jake ever went to college.but who cares

  • does anybody know how many notes per sec. he plays?

  • TOO MUCH ROCK FOR ONE HAND!

  • I was there seeing them for the second time. T'was great fun.

  • the crowd wont shut the fuck up and listen. let em play, dammit!

  • i missed this show i had exams so i couldnt make it...from this small bit though it looks insane. I can't wait for the next UM show in philly they need to come back, may 5 2006 was godly

  • Jake Cinninger. Best guitarist ever. That was him at 50%.

  • nah thats him a about 10%

  • lol the saddest part is, i've seen way better from him. SICK guitar player

  • JAKEEEEEEEEEEEE fuck dude =]=]=]

  • Nice good jam he is great and clean tone not all muddy boys and girls!1

  • oh man!!!!! ;)

  • jake has been my idol since 03 or 04..i love this dude lol

  • this is what its all about
