R.I.P. Lillen.
Quarless was a sucker for losing to bums as his pro record shows with ko1 defeats to such "giants" as Manny Gabriel,Theo Josephs, Paddy Finn in 2 & Funso Banjo ffs in 3.
He twice to Hughroy Currie & I saw both defeats to Mark Lee,the 2nd was another 1st round ko.Lee had shrugged off his best shots in a 10 rounder which went all the way.Ok, he could bang, little else & not much stamina. Add a weak chin and you see why he didn't go far. He had guts to fight pro so I hope he made money from it.
He was faster, sharper and more intelligent. But the History is... He fought Lennox (From West Ham/Canada)who proved himself to be a Heavyweight Legend. If Lennox hadn't been around at the same time ,Noel would've been a World Champion, his demolition of John Louis Gardner proved that in his fight after Anders Eklunds. If you were fighting now Noel, You would have cleaned up the division, Even that freak Valuev.
Noel was awesome and he did have a sickening massive punch and he was the most exciting British Heavyweight boxer of the 80's. I wish he'd fought Bruno.
Frank Bruno spent the first 5 years or so fighting men who did not have a chance but after the above he found himself in with Eklund...Bruno was a fraud
Thanks for this. It`s hard to find videos on Eklund. After all- he was a decent fighter with a 19-5-1 record. The losses came against god names as Quarless, Bugner, Bruno, Damiani and Witherspoon.
Eklund is big and strong, but gets exposed against skilled fighters. If you can get a hold of Tim Witherspoon vs Anders Eklund from 1990(?). Anders Eklund gets knocked out cold in the 1 round.
Brunos management team steered him away from Quarless

Quarless in this form would have given Bruno all kinds of problems.I will always remember him for this and the Gardner fight.
Great speed for a big lad and a good dig.
As the great Nat Basso said in this clip, with some self belief Noel could have gone a lot further.

One thing you could not afford to be when you went in against Quarlessis, was a slow starter. Eklund and Gardner both painfully found that out.

He tried to make it in the US, but the talent pool over there around 1990 was just too great.

Yeah, but he got lucky 2 times!
And he also took the "WBA Americas Heavyweight Title"
