This guy is really good...good tuning/ rhythm / tempo/ phrasing/ blowing and nice emergence of tone colour ...if he gives lessons .well worth listening to.
I personally prefer Michael Tubridy's playing to Matt Molloy's. However they both sound great and they are definitely masters in their own rights. However I am a much more traditional-minded person having built my Irish music foundation on listening to old recordings of those masters, and Michael Tubridy sounded more traditional. Plus, he could play the concertina.
Matt Molloy took Michael's position in the Chieftains as he chose to leave the music bizz to work as an engineer.
In response to luie425-your loss. Kevin Crawford is a fantastic musician and is great to take a class with if you're able. Well done Kev-the Grinter Bb in red lancewood sounds amazing. Keep the tunes coming!
@celticmarine1 I was told he's amazing, this movie just confirmed that, now I'm really psyched to study under him in October at O'Flaherty's Irish Music Retreat :D
In response to StJimmy,I had heard Long Acre in the 80's & can't believe that K Crawford was the only one to 'make it'; they were ace, and I'd say quite a few bands did 'copy' or at least get a lot of ideas from the way they arranged the music.
Mick Conneely,Brendan Boyle, Joe Molloy and Bernie Davis are all living in Ireland and playing music one way or another... Ivan Miletitch is living in The English/Welsh borders and playing in a band called DisKan.
long Acre were fresh and innovative, all great musicians and I believe they did start a new movement in Irish Music...
Kevin, your playing is consistently at the highest caliber throughout ALL flute-dom. Used to have a Grinter Bb of my own, but now I'm on Patrick's list for a full keyed D and a Bb keyless. Hoping that Bb comes up sooner rather than later. Good on you, Kevin! Hope to hear more.
he played with a deadly band in the 80s called Long Acre, Ivan Miletitch (genius on guitar/bouzouki),Joe Molloy (gr8 banjo player) Mick Conneely (fiddle) Brendan Boyle (box) and Bernie Davis (Vocals)

He also has some recordings with a nifty traditional band called Moving Cloud, though I'm not sure they really played around much.
