  • If anyone is wondering, the line the train travelled on is the S&C (Settle & Carlisle)

  • Comment removed

  • How wonderful to be reminded of an England untarnished by the 'Health and Safety' freaks who have taken all the fun out of our lives.

  • @bmoviefan100 Quite! Oh for a time machine!

  • @Quarkman0 I'll second that !

  • @bmoviefan100 I remember the warning label "Do not lean out of the window" being changed to "Do not clean soot off the window" by schoolboys everywhere - including myself!

  • @Quarkman0 Great days indeed...!!

  • I remember leaning out and loved being in the smoke and getting blinded by some embers which really hurt, brilliant.

  • @Quarkman0 Me and my dad never took any notice of the signs. we have footage of the North Yorkshire Moors railway from 2009 Pickering to Whitby and back again out of the left side of the train all the way.

Sadly I cannot upload that footage :( need to find the video tape and convert it really. hehe. (like all the old steam days videos)

  • That theme could be for the Railway Series

  • Wonderful!

    Settle & Carlisle?

  • Great film ,the yellow stripe is to denote 'not to run south of Crewe' due to the electrification.

  • My beautiful long-lost England.........I miss you so.

  • you echoed y thoughts (through the tears) beautifully.

  • @Vick2242 Just spotted your comment on the 6115 cine compilation - My beautiful long-lost England.........I miss you so.- so apt

  • I should know this but what's the yellow stripe for on the cabside??? Does it mean it's condemned?

  • I've heard two reasons for the stripe; one is that it's condemned, and another is that it isn't allowed to run on a certain stretch of electrified line.

  • the condemnation guess is the correct one..

  • ITYWF that is incorrect.

Yellow stripes across the cabsides were put on those locomotives which had insufficient clearances once the juice was turned on south of Crewe. IIRC it was September 1964. All former LMR express locos were affected, and banned. Only Brits were exempted of the bigger machines.

  • TTFN

  • @sofialeguan ...........so why are these locos allowed under the wires in preservation?!

  • incorrect-it simply means that after 0ct 1964 running south of Crewe was banned for certain locos 'cos of electrification clearances.

  • Excellent. Brilliant. Pure nostalgia!

  • Another little gem, a great piece of video from out of those great hay days, I wonder how many more pieces of such film are hidden away gathering dust in somebody's loft or garage. Thank you for bringing this one to light, though the music soundtrack, I recall was with another similar piece of railway film.

  • I'm not surprised the music is used elsewhere, it's entitled "Coronation Scot" amd often requested on "Children's Favourites in the Uncle Mac days by trainspotters nationwide!

  • Hi mate, thanks for the info, I did not know the name of the music, yet I've heard it loads of times over these many years, great video anyway, keep em coming..John

  • Thats brilliant

  • This reminds me of a time where you could go almost anywhere by train. Before Beeching British railways had pride, every station lovely presented and staffed (not a bus shelter with yobs) Prices were fair, excusions common and cheap, Loads of Freight (not these monster HGV which cause congestion and pollution) Please bring back British railways

  • Great video! Also, don't forget this is the theme muscic used for the radio dramas of Francis Durbridges "Paul Temples" stories.

Further thoughs; try Ravel's "Bolero" to freight drags up Shap, or the Settle and Carlisle?

  • Thanks for this video. When folks ask me why do I spend so much time working for free on a heritage railway. Just smell the steam, hear the wheels on the rails and music comes into my head

  • Absolutely fantastic - thanks for posting it!

  • Thank You! You have absolutely no idea how this video and the music has taken me back to happy days of childhood. Do keep up the good work!

  • I knew that some kind soul would do something like this. As soon as I hear the first few bars of this piece, my mind retires into a better past. Thank you

  • I used to stand on Babworth Bridge when the Flying Scotsman went underneath, the smoke and steam enveloped us and smelt absolutely lovely.

  • Magnificent! I sympathize with those poor devils who were born too late to experience the glory of the steam age...

  • i am one of those poor devils, and i am very anoyed that i missed it, and sad that such a wonderful era has passed.

  • Nice bit of film! Settle & Carlisle before the end of steam - and heading north from Carlisle. If you have more, let's be seeing it please.

  • Excellent and nostalgic music as well

  • I really enjoyed this. The loco was in a sorry state when I last saw it a few years ago. Lets hope we see it in steam, and on the main line some day.

  • Long legged 3 cylinder beastie. Wooo Wooo. 'Heard they were rough riding 'cos of short wheelbase... can any footplate men confirm this?

  • Lovely video! Thanks for posting. Has anyone got any footage of the LMS streamliners?
