I loved this movie for one main reason...the Indian Maiden does not die. Most of the time Native American women in film are portrayed as dependent on a white male hero and she dies as a result. She suffers at the hands of Manifest Destiny and American Expansionism. Rez Bomb releases the Celluloid Maiden from her white American misconceptions and gives the audience a new stronger more realistic character.
@megs97216 Thanks for the comment, really nice to hear. The story was developed purely as a story, not for a particular culture so when set in Lakota country it doesn't fall to any of the cinema stereotypes, it is just a movie and it is great to see that that resonates with people.
I like that it isn't showing any drunks, or the "Alcoholism is killing our tribe" theme. Nice, Something new for a change. I haven't seen it yet but I don't mind. Read your comments, it isn't easy making a film haha. By the looks of it.
@yaomang08 Thanks, yeah takes a long time to make a movie. Happy to make one that's just about people set on a Rez rather than one forced into a pigeon hole by being issues driven. It's available on DVD from amazon etc.
Why not make a film about the decedents of Celts and their way of life? lol It wouldn't bring you as much attention if you did. Ndns and their hardships roll the money in. See it angers me that you are making money off this. I'm done. I have no more words for you or this. You are another Keven Costner wanting to bank on the ndns.
@Tabbyinblack Thanks, but you will have seen the film isn't another dnd film it's another film that happens to have ndn's in it.I had a Swiss woman complain that the film was just a "crime story' not and ndn movie and I though that was demeaning to why should a culture be relegated to not being a part of any kind of story in cinema? I shot the opening 9 mins in Scotland years ago and is almost identical. Lots of people in know in ndn country like that it's just a love story
@Tabbyinblack Thanks, but you will have seen the film isn't another dnd film it's another film that happens to have ndn's in it.I had a Swiss woman complain that the film was just a "crime story' not and ndn movie and I though that was demeaning to why should a culture be relegated to not being a part of any kind of story in cinema?I shot the opening 9 mins in Scotland years ago and is almost identical. Lots of people in know in ndn country like that it's just a love story w/no drunks or wise men
@Tabbyinblack And the film has cost me a lot of money that I will never recoup as most films loose money and almost every film in ndn country lost money other than Dances, Smoke Signals, Dance Me Outside and other odd other one.If Hollywood could make money setting films there they would. My film would have made more money set elsewhere but then that wouldn't have brought investment into Pine Ridge (who made money from this film. I didn't) But I agree most ndn films are poor, exploitative. etc
@Tabbyinblack Celt, Zulu, Maya, Tibetan, "Sioux", ... Some are survivors, some are parasites. If you are Celt, make your own movie. Don't blaspheme the indigenous.
@Tabbyinblack The thing about Rez Bomb though and this is a very important point is that it wasn't specifically written for Pine Ridge. It was originally written for Scotland but I didn't want to shoot another movie in Scotland and I have a lot of friends on Pine Ridge and I would rather have spent the budget there than anywhere. The story worked well there so I did it there. It's not culturally specific, could have been shot anywhere. But movies tend to be high drama wherever they are set.
@roaringfirefilms I'm not sure how to put it into words here. I'm not a fan of describing myself and although I am Lakota, I don't speak for all of the Lakota. Some will like this, others won't. I see nothing special in your film. It's just another ndn film showcasing what we already live with and know. People love to use ndns in films because so many people love the culture and some want to be ndn. There are so many films already that show the hardships and the bad side to rez life.
@Tabbyinblack my other comment has disappeared. As I said, it's sensationalistic journalism using non fictional characters based on something you've seen. Alot of non ndns come to the rez and think b/c they been there they understand the culture. I wish film makers would take time to show the good things, not just the bad. Why not challenge yourself and make something to show the good? And yes, it is exploitative. I want ppl to stop USING ndns. Find another subject to film.
@Tabbyinblack SO ultimately how can I be exploiting a community where I choose to tell a universal love story over any other any more that I would have been exploiting the people of Edinburgh where it was originally set?If I said it couldn't have been set on Pine Ridge for any reasons of "sensitivity" then that would be discriminating.I agree most ndn country films are exploitative, never just about people being peopleBut all my characters are just that, people. We need 2 see all stories everywhere
Steven Simpson, Nice Movie................ I made a tribute to the movie Rez Bomb on my page. Remember I saw you in Pine Ridge and asked permission. I'm Roman's Dad the one you talked to in front of the OST Tribal Building. Anyway I hope you like the Tribute. Visit my page to see it.
I so the movie now....Very very good movie.I recomandet to everybody to see it.I will see it again tomorrow. If you havent seen it,go and bay it.GREAT MOVIE.
Just watched this movie..loved it! I bought it online for 19.95 and it was worth it. It came less than a week without problems. I love indie films and this is a good one. Plus Trent Ford is always a nice treat!
great vid. it counters toby keiths "i love this bar" vid-it shows most offensive portrayal of native american man.i saw it at about 51 sec & 2 min 42 sec. homicidal maniac caressing knife, leering at rube girls, who find him repulsive & he has severed head in gym bag & makes crazed faces. look without sound-it's bad music. he should be accountable for outrageous bigotry. of course his hatred extends to women & others too. sorry to interrupt good vibe, but important to expose this vile nonsense.
I cant wait to see the Film I was born and raised in PINE RIDGE once the GREAT LAKOTA NATION. I Love my Home an Always will. Im sure it will show some not so good things but that is life we are a POOR Nation and could be that we might get some much needed Help from this movie or any movie filmed on the REZ.
This is an absolutley wonderful film! I saw it last night at the SD film festival. I am wondering where I can purchase a copy. Again, great, great film!!
This film is a universal story and could be set anywhere. It is condescending to assume that Pine Ridge doesn't deserve to be a location for a universal story as much as anywhere else.
I respect your veiws and all, but as a Native myself- I am just saying, that this movie just mad PR look a little worse than it did! I mean they already have an alcoholism problem & this movie just makes it seem like its a runover-haven for Lying, cheating, extorsion, and not to mention a sort of bad veiw on the people, though the film does have a Few good veiws~
Its due to my commitment to friends and the community on Pine Ridge that I relocated the film there. Was originally set in Scotland but wanted to spend the films budget where it was most useful. No alchoholism etc is shown. It's love story/thriller.
If I treat a Lakota community different than I would if I set the film anywhere else then I'd be part of the problem not the solution. I hope you can check the film out when it is released down the line and that you enjoy iy. Many thanks.
yea this was shot in pine ridg and rushville and i live in rushville part of my family is in it this is real and it true thank for posting it roaringfirefilms
yea part of this was shot im my town not the rez it is when the pplz r chasing the one person the one in the red shirt at 1:05 is my cousion and the bar is his.
