Thanks for posting this on here. I'm glad this became part of true Hip Hop culture. In fact, here's a rundown of used this before SWV did: 1. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five-Freedom(1980),2.Disco Dave and The Force of Five-High Power Rap(1980),3.Boogie Down Productions-You Must Learn(Live At The Caucus Mountain Remix)(1989).
Another great underrated late 70s jam. I remember this from neighborhood dances and our skating rink. Too bad its so hard to find on CD and Mp3 today.
I use to DJ the shit out of this song back in Brooklyn, Queens & Long Island. East New York Uptown Crew!!! We gave birth to the Fat Boys, Stetsasonic, Bad Boys & Sparky D.
Truly old school...I was at Grambling when this song came out. Benjamin Menancio (Omega Psi Phi) played Sax with the group...Freedom while at Jackson State. He went on to retire as an Army Officer and formed another group in California called Souljazz of Fortune. Freedom was truly one of the baddest bands who helped pave the way for many, many artists.
Sad that I don't remember this song from back in the day. :-( On the positive side, I was introduced to it when the Japanese rap group Scha Para Darr did their own version of this song, sampling much of the background music.
These guys were freshman at Jackson State University back in 1978 when they created this. I love it because my hometown had a lot to do with early hip hop. One of the members told me that the song picked up alot on the East Coast that's why it was sampled alot by rap artists...

@mwazi1 which migrated north to the Capital District via mixtapes from jams they use to have in the park in NYC. Still got a few tapes. Lol

Awesome song. I think Jurassic 5 kind of sampled the beginning of the song too, on their song 'Concrete schoolyard'.
