It's like this, the four starting characters are: Charlie, Ming Ming, Apollo, and DnD... The one you can buy later are: Lina, Big Bo, Maki, Rough, and Ocean... Ocean and Rough aren't in the US yet...

You can just buy ANY character you want if you have the money for them.

And to answer that, just choose any character you want to start the game out with. Since you cant exactly play without a starting character.
