  • wow that a lot of w nuts. what zone are you. looking into some nut trees

  • @pinetar100 This area is zone 8. Four seasons, usually have mild winters. Some exceptions, last winter being one of them. Got down to the low teens a few times, and then the cold and frost snaps just hung in there. The walnut tree knew....

  • hay skew pea, good for you. glad to see the homestead doing well. how's HG and mameaux?

  • Hey crawdaddy! Long time no hear! Been busy here, as usual. Gonna go get Mameaux in two weeks, she's been spending the summer with my sister in Montana. Getting too cold there now for her liking....

  • Wow, protein all over the ground.

    Gotta love walnuts.

  • Yep, lots and lots of protein all over the ground. Tonight its still in the wheelbarrow, inside the shop since its supposed to rain. I need to get creative now on how to dry them all, not much unused room on the floor of the shop. Might have to string some hammocks...

  • Getting about 100 lbs off of my tree this year. Try putting them on the driveway, and running over them with a rider lawn mower to get the hulls off. saves the brown hands.

  • I wear and carry several pair of those disposable latex gloves in my back pocket - but this year haven't had too many that I needed to pick the husk off. And this particular carpathian walnut has an easy to crush shell, just stepping on them, even on soft ground, would crush them. My banties stand by waiting for just that to happen. I stomp the ugly black ones for them anyway - I don't spray so I always have a few with the black husk instead of the green husk.

  • I haven't weighed mine, they're still drying. Up until today I picked up 25 gallons; today I had that contractors wheelbarrow heaped up. That was just the nice clean ones. There were a couple more buckets of those I picked up before my back said NO MORE TODAY.

  • LOL, must be tired, that last didn't make much sense, the last couple buckets I picked up were ones that were dark from being in a blackened husk. The uglies... but they taste just fine.

  • Okay. Feels a little hot here today. I like cool.

  • I like cool better than heat, you can always put on more layers of clothes, but it can be so hot that even without clothes you're uncomfortable!

But its damp and cool today, so you have to keep working hard when you're outside to stay warm...

  • Your tree is "masting". They do it every 3 to 5 years or so. My parents had a pear tree that did it a couple of years back and the mess was incredible. That, and they even lost some large limbs off the tree because the weight of the pears was too much.

  • Yeah, I was worried earlier this year, some of the branches were nearly to the ground, especially when it rained. At least its lifting some with the weight of the walnuts and the fall leaves starting to come off.

This year also gave me a great pear harvest. I really think we have a hard winter coming our way.

  • I tend to agree with you. Common sense says that if its going be a nasty winter, the tree is going to produce as much fruit as it can for the squirrels and various other animals. If the squirrels and whatnot die off due to a bad winter, the trees won't get to spread their seeds more than a few feet. A "symbiotic relationship" if you like.
