Written by band leader Harry Roy and recorded by Harry Roy & his Bat Club Boys in the 1930's. It probably only had one meaning in those days - his Girlfriends CAT.
The meaning was always mean to be the plainly and painfully obvious, it was meant as a fun record from a band who had specialised in such ditties, Harry Roy, his version was promptly banned by the BBC. records where often issued as Adult content in those days, the fun would go above the head of the children! Such records reached their height of popularity in the 1940's in the US, but had peaked in the early 1930's in the UK, with dance bands.
I heard this for the this for the first time today in the airport. It cracked me up so badly that the ticket agent nearby asked me what I was listening to. I didn't tell her. I love these guys!
One of the accents is American Yiddish. The other accent is a very blue-collar bastardization of Irish and German accents. Rarely heard much anymore. Mostly places like Chicago,Cleveland, parts of New York.
A great book with a cool CD... or vice versa... definitely worth checking out, and get A Load Of This is one of the songs that will stay in your head for DAYS...!
Yeah, Crumb changed my life's direction for real and not because he inspired me, but because we actually had several encounters, and he literally prophesied I would be doing something else when I was a happy Cartoonist at the top of my career or so I thought, he was right and I had to change, fast
Well,Crumb and his guys always covered obscure 1920s and 1930s tunes so this fits perfectly with their usual stuff... I always like them... who doesnt?
oh that R. Crumb

Of course the double entendre was understood , think of all the saucy postcards being purchased at the same time which relied on double entendre

@blackpoolbarmpot trust me it probaly meant pussy. my great grandfather used to play this song in bars and they were aware of double entendres
motherthirteen 7 months ago 3
@blackpoolbarmpot Double entendres and dirty jokes are older than dirt. Even in Shakespeare's plays it was pretty common, and further back than that.

At 2:41, that caption should read "Oy, oy, oy!" instead of "Oh, yeah, yeah!"
Now if we could just figure out the first part of the line at 2:12.

@dadoctah A year late, but the first bit is "is she that way" it's a line from the 20's song loveable and sweet.

It sounds like that because it is a remake (and a fairly close one) of a 1931 song.

Where do they talk like that in the US... like doity for dirty etc?

It's kind of an old-timey gangster accent. So, Chicago, mid-30s or so? Less a matter of * *where* as it is *when*

I've known this song for eyars - but didn't know it was by Robert Crumb. A comic genius.
genyouwin 3 years ago 2
This is a traditional song, not Crumb's. The song has been covered by many famous artists like Bono, Bob Dylan and Madonna

Really, but the Bono, Bob Dylan and Madonna part of it was a joke.
