Hey gang! I just thought I'd get things moving again! I thought I should let you all know that I got a high platinum last week at the Salsa Convention in Wyoming! I was shocked though, because during the turn my partner and I were out of sync with the clave. Go figure. Lucky for me I wasn't the judge!
I was intrigued because lately I've been finding that the relentless beating of the clave has been getting to me. So, after emailing Mr. Polanco at his hotmail accoutn we were able to set up a session. It was quite odd. The therapy consists in Felipe dancing in front of you while dangling a carrot in the shape of a clave. The rythmic patterns of his footwork quickly induce a hypnotic state, while the clave-shaped carrot adds nothing and was simply bizarre.
Hey everybody! Just wanted to check in! You know I stumbled upon this magazine ad the other day for "Cure your anxiety with Felipe Polanco Hypnotic Therapy."
Those are inspiring words DrMJackson203. Let's just hope that they reach "youragas" who seems unable to accept the death of the count and the birth of the clave.
If any of you out there find yourselves in a similar downward spiral, don't lose faith. All you need is willpower and the modern miracle of the clave. We can do it, together!
Today one of my intermediate salsa students came to my office to discuss with me his apparent addiction to the count. He confessed to me that he had been trying to wean off the count slowly, but as we all know, that's easier said than done. I praised this brave soul for seeking professional help for his count addiction and encouraged him not to give up the battle with his inner self.
Kirikou1540, I am absolutely intrigued by your text comment postings and am thus extatic to contribute to all that's positive in your salsa career! I do agree with you that the Cuban market is at this time quite competitive, however no matter how ample the supply of salsa bags, the US just can't seem to import enough of this highly marketable good.
youragas, I believe it is you who needs a life, or rather, a deeper conceptual understanding of the latest trends in salsa instruction. I suggest that this weekend you take some time to familiarize yourself with basic salsa terms like clave retail and salsa bags. Furthermore, I invite you to visit my salsa ebay store and purchase these aforementioned items, before you judge any of the text comment postings made by members of the youtube community. Best of luck!
i almost crapped myself when you talk about clave retail...the worst is you seem serious...get a life, dude.....the clave is booming in Cuba??? i mean dude, that just ain't right.....fruit
I'm sorry for posting so much, but I'm just genuinely so happy to find, for the first time in my life, people who share the same passion I have for the clave. Knowing that there are others out there just like me has had an incredibly positive influence on both my life and salsa career. And yes, DrMJackson203, I would be honored to buy a clave, and salsa bag of course (dont want to look stupid), from your ebay salsa store. I appreciate your helpful attitude.
DrMJackson203, you know I was really intrigued by your suggestion that the beginner salsa dancer purchase as many claves as he can. It just seems a little too extreme, especially considering the salsa bag to clave ratio which is constantly in flux. If you buy too many claves and then can't find enough salsa bags, you just look stupid. So many people mock me for my strong salsa positions, but I hope you can understand that salsa is serious shit.
And while I concede that clave retail is booming in Miami, it pales in comparison to the Cuban market. Unfortunately with the travel restrictions its ridicuously difficult to get down there. That siad, the name Felipe Polanco carries some weight. If you just head down to the embassy and throw his name around (in the same manner that he does his thighs) I don't think customs will give you a problem.
DrMJackson203, you're such a gas. I can't believe you've actually went on tour with Felipe! And I completely understand the embarrassment of just KNOWING that someone ELSE forgot his clave. The tension is always palpable. (especially when you don't use the count, i mean in that rare case, the clave is absolutely essential)
Down here in Miami where we live, plenty of clave retail still takes place, although, unfortunately, it has become so mass produced in the last few years. My wife has started a home business selling claves and salsa bags on Ebay, so let us know if you're interested. I encourage my salsa students, even beginners, to purchase as many claves as they can afford, especially if they already own more than one salsa bag.
Dear Kirikou1540, your use of sophisticated salsa jargon delights me! A few years back, my wife and I made a decision to travel to as many of Felipe Polanco's performances as possible. At the one in this particular video, which took place in a breathtaking dance hall on Nevski prospect right on Neva in St. Petersburg, my wife and I were both very aware that Mr. Polanco had left his clave in his other salsa bag. Oh, what an embarrassment!
It's just mindblowing the number of claves the average salsa dancer has nowadays. I mean, I genuinely find it hard to keep up ever since the clave stores in my neighborhood went out of business a few years back. Damn shame too, because it seems like demand is back up again. A really difficult market, you know?... especially during economic downturns. Actually, I'm hoping to make a killing on claves. Back in the bad times, I'd hoard as many claves in order to resell them to the suckers hahaha
I mean, I guess you have to cut the P-man some slack. Anyone could have left his good clave in his other salsa bag. It happens to me quite frequently in fact. Now that I think about it, I really shouldn't have two salsa bags...I should really consolidate thinking about how many times I've forgot my clave.
Did anyone else notice that the clave was slightly off beat? While arguably a minor point, I fell that it detracted significantly from my enjoyment of the performance.
