  • whan the game gear came out it was competing with the original gameboy, and not the gameboy color simple mistake

  • The Game Gear was an 8 bit system, hardly 16 bit as stated here in the comments. Sega wouldn't release a 16 bit handheld until the mid 1990s.

  • REALLY DUDE >:O SEGA SUCKS BODY BALLS SACK!!!!!!!!!!!! I SAY THROW THAT ASS GAME TO THE GARVAGE!!!!!!!!

  • REALLY DUDE :o you got your self a stupid gamegear. sega game gear is one the worthless game of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i say that you throw that peace of crap make more reviews for gameboy. sega sucks BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ok how about you do a little research on the system if your gonna review it. It was released to compete with the old school Game Boy. The major diffrence between the two besides the fact that the game gear had color and a backlit screen versus the game boy. The Game Gear was a 16bit portable gaming syster where as the Game Boy was an 8bit. So with the Game Gear you basically had a portable sega genesis.

  • AVGN : MY ASS IS PORTABLE!!

  • that unlively yey

  • I'm planning on getting one. But I don't know

  • sorry dude but the game gear was made to compete with the original gameboy in 1989-1990 so compared to the gameboy color of course its smaller it came out like 5 years later. the original gameboy was smaller but not backlit nor in color like the game gear was but the gameboy had more games with bigger storylines. so both systems kick ass in their own way.

  • screw you bitch. im way better than you haha!

  • I love this shit

  • booring as fuck

  • "The Core System" was part of Sega's marketing strategy in the early - mid nineties. Their products were all 16 bit rather than the older 8 bit Nintendo & Gameboy. The "core" just meant the processor had a 16 bit core...revolutionary for it's time. They also referred to the faster processor speed as "blast processing." pretty ridiculous actually, but remember they are marketing to children.

  • its not completely fair to compare the game boy color to the game gear because it came out way before the game boy color but the game boy classic is the best game system ever

  • 83 people aperrently couldn't afford ALKALINE Batteries! I still get 8 hours of game time off my Gamegear!

  • the game gear was made to compete with the game boy not game boy color

  • what pieces of shits these r, they brake to easy

  • Why are you reviewing something i cannot buy?

  • I respect people who make reviews on here, but this one is flawed. Your comparison's to the GB and GBC are all wrong time wise for starters. You also are reviewing an old hand held system with a modern state of mind...big mistake

  • Ah the Game Gear, a hallmark of just what SEGA was about. They were always YEARS ahead of everyone else. First Internet console (Genesis with the SEga Channel, Saturn with direct connection, Dreamcast with server based multiplayer). Color screen seven years before The Gameboy Color. And Back-lit screen even more years before the GBA SP. When SEGA was around, games were about being awesome, not about nothing but "realistic graphics" and gimmicks. I miss SEGA.

  • @CMacK1294 so do I my friend. :)

    Pity it's crappy now :(

  • I love my gear!!!

  • The Sega Game Gear was made to compete with the Nintendo GameBoy. Not the GAMEBOY COLOR. You need to brush up on your gaming history. @OldSkoolGam3r

  • @MrLicky106 people already corrected him. you need to brush up on your reading.

  • I had this killer shit.sonic was really nige

  • i forgot i had the tv tuner too :)

  • man i had this in first grade... i remember playing it in the car on the way to my grandmas and the batteries would die before i left the driveway lol... only had sonic i think...

  • the color wasnt around

  • Great review! Thanks

somehow the gameboy can be compared to an iphone. although it lacks a lot of standard features people go crazy for it... (yes said the iphone has less features than other phone - so flame me now! - get it on ;)

  • gameboy is better

  • Im pretty sure the batteries dont last for 6 hours...Am I right guys ???

  • @joelcr250 yea its less. i have a game gear but the sound doesnt work on mine

  • Sorry for the icky comment but I don't like the Sega Game Gear. If Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't created that system would have been worthless. And it is basically copying off of the Gameboy but it has a bright color screen, it comes in one color, and the Gameboy is only 1/3 of it's wieght. And sorry to all who love the Sega Game Gear.

  • I hated GameBoys. THIS is the only system i wanted back then. I could never justify the cost though. Either purchase price or to keep feeding it batteries :) I SOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo wanted to play Defenders of the oasis though.

This system was beautiful. May buy one now. IF I can find the games. Off to FleaBay.

  • Wow, fail. game gear competed against the original gameboy... GB Color came out way later fool >_>

  • sega was way better

  • @jose713ful what the hell are u talking about? ..this was just like sega its a portable version of sega....by the way they are both awesome

  • It's a handheld.

But don't fucking try to fit it into your pocket!

  • core majesco right?

  • how are you an old school gamer you're like 15 years old..

  • "This is what it was made to compete with"

*shows a device released over 8 years later*

Completely inaccurate, shitty review. Nice try though, BRO.

  • Man I hate when people do reviews on things without reading about them.

It was competing with the brick Gameboy and smashed it. It's heavier, but way lighter than carrying my Master System and CRT TV ('91, remember?).

You comment on "good graphics" but Gameboy Color's graphics didn't match up even years later.

The wrist strap isn't for carrying it around, you dolt. It's so that you don't drop and break the thing. Like a Wii remote? Unless you wear that as a bracelet.

    I wouldn't be surprised.

  • it's a massive brick of a system. it had a relatively small library, but a lot of the games were ports of higher quality sega genesis, meaning a good portion of the library was composed of passable games. There were, in my opinion, a lot of pluses to the system, including the backlit screen years before the SP. The biggest drawback in my opinion, was that it burns through batteries like wildfire, at 6 AA batteries at a time.

  • its like a gameboy advance before the gameboy colour :)

  • dude it wasnt competing with the color, it was competing with the old gameboy

  • Good video I hav one to with sonic 2 sonic double trouble sonic 3 heels chuck rock and more only bad thing that my speaker dosent work

  • glad u said robotnik and not eggman

  • 240 O_O?

  • I can't believe gameboy merced the GG so HARD! Well that's what youse get when youse only have a few great games to choose from and ate batteries like pacman!

  • it actually launched 8 years after the game gear. the genesis and game boy launched in 89 the game gear launched in 90 and the game boy color launched in 98. i had a game gear when i was younger. i still have it but it doesn't work. i had madden 95, world series baseball, jeopardy, sonic 2, evander holyfields real deal boxing, and power rangers the movie. its funny how the game boy actually managed to win. even though the game boy color was made 8 yrs after the gg is still superior.

  • WE MISS U SEGA :(....... FUCK U NINTENDO AND MICROSOFT

  • @Legendaryzantroy Well, Sega killed the Game Gear, not Nintendo and Microsoft. The GG was doing well and Sega phased it out to introduce the Nomad, which was basically a portable Genesis... and it was bigger and churned batteries even faster than the GG. The Nomad failed and Sega killed the GG. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot...

  • @Legendaryzantroy Is that why nintendo murdered sega? hey just sayin that when something's better it's better.

  • @Legendaryzantroy huh? sony killed sega with their ps2...

  • @jknproductions9900 don't be wrond, Nintendo kill them with the NES and then even more with the SNES

  • @skarthan

The SNES didn't kill the Genesis. Sega gave Nintendo all they could handle in the 16-bit days. The only region where they truly lost was Japan, which unfortunately caused one of the biggest blunders of that era; discontinuing support for the Genesis to concentrate solely on the Saturn while the SNES was still strong. Sega of Japan sort of ignored the continued success of the Genesis in the US, Europe, and Brazil and so, shot themselves in the foot.

  • when the game gear wasnt meant to compete with the GBC... a friend of my got a gg and it was great. colordisplay, tvtuner and it was a lot more ergonimic than the poor GameBoy.

And sonic would never say "srew you bitch" to his friend knuckles... i really hate you for all this shit you're talking about in this video...

  • @Omeprazol20 First of all, that's tails. Second, you don't think he would with his 'tude? :D

  • Owned 2 Sega Game Gears, played a lof during the years. Perfect on long trips. ;) Got about 15 games. =)

  • Also, you completely forgot to mention the brightness wheel on the right side. And those "things on the back" are for the stand that you could use with the tv tuner. Yeah, you could watch color television with the gamegear, I don't remember being able to do that with the gameboy.

  • Sorry it was not made to compete with either the pocket or the color. It was made to compete with the original gameboy. The pocket was not released until 1996 and the Color until 1998. None of those 3 systems have backlights either. Why did you buy a gamegear? Just so you could talk bad about it on youtube?

  • @XtremAlien actually it was 2003 but I agree with your point. Why did it take nintendo so long to make a backlit screen?

  • The Game Gear was made to compete with the shity black & white brick game boy not the smaller game boy colour.

The Game Gear was pretty much a handheld Master System and was far superior to the Game boy,

SEGA's Game Gear had a backlit screen a good 15 years before the Game boy did, i thought the Game Gear was fucking Awesome when i was a kid and i still do now. =)

  • @mutronics1 my ass it was superior. 6 hour battery life and takes 6 bateries. I mean they both had great games but id rather be playing the gameboy because i would be changing the batteries every 7 seconds.

  • @mutronics1 Too bad it didn't have any games.

  • @RedYoshiReturns It Had Games

  • @mutronics1 yea but the gameboy brick is yet still smaller

  • @mutronics1 the tg express was more advanced, and atleast its not a linx, game gear was good, but tg 16 is the best

  • @mutronics1 don''t want to be a fanboy as I like them both equally, but you've kinda been unfair on nintendo. Yes, it was superior, but it took 6 AA batteries, which it finished with in about 5-6 hours. Also, a game console isn't worth jack shit without a good library of games to support it, which is another point to the gameboy. Last of all, the gameboy actually did have a backlight way before what you said. Ever heard of the Gameboy Light?

Fun fact: the gba was actually frontlit, not backlit

  • @mutronics1 although the game gear had nice features it was as big as fuck and didnt have as good of a library of games s the gameboy

  • @mutronics1 i hate game gears. i use to have one. i got it replaced 3 times all replacements broke and all were bulky with low battery life

  • @imtherealRetroFan123 but i dont COMPLETELY hate it.

  • @mutronics1 shitty gameboy? LOLOLOLOL, keep your opinion to yourself bud

  • @Roweanos212 "shitty gameboy? LOLOLOLOL, keep your opinion to yourself bud"

Keep your opinions to YOURSELF?! What the Hell do you think a public forum is FOR?! And I know you get pissy when someone just has to have a DIFFERENT opinion than yours. But... that's the way things are and what this damn thing is for. And if that's too much for you to handle, don't bother expressing your OWN opinion.

    Good luck. All my best..

  • @DaneYoussef except i didnt express my opinion... i like the gamegear and the gameboy... see buddy i have an open mind, that is something you lack

  • @mutronics1 your confusing

  • it was made to compete with the regualar gamboy not gameboy color

hence why color was a big deal to them >.<

and the stuff on the back if for the magnifier sadly i have one (actually 2)

hands down the game gear pwned gameboy but cost and batteries was the only downfall

  • it was made to compete with the regualar gamboy not gameboy color

hence why color was a big deal to them >.<

  • damn for the size of this thing they could have made a table stand for this and a controller for it

  • The Game Gear was a direct competitor to the original GameBoy. It had colors when then GameBoy was black and white. It's huge yes, but it didn't stop me from loving this system. The GameBoy Color came out WAY later man.

  • Game Gear in the UK, very common, has sound & screen faults due to poor components, is fixable & there are people offering to replace those components for a resonable price, batteries dont last long, cant really call it a portable when the batteries dont last long, picture quality is good, i have a few & soon i will start having them upgraded with new components, so they last

  • I had a game gear for awhile, I never had many games for it.. and I don't know what even happened to it... >_>;

  • @XtremAlien You mean GBA SP had it in '03.

  • The coolest accessory was not mentioned: TV Tuner card! you can watch TV on this thing!!! did you know that? It goes in the game-card slot and it has an antenna ...

  • @XtremAlien Gameboy was still better had better games and didn't eat up batteries

  • @Christoph4eva who cares man i reckon saga better then Nintendo except the best Nintendo system its Nintendo 64 Zelda ftw

  • holyshit how much did you buy this for? isnt it rare?

  • @vytong its not rare at all....

  • @evil1234561012 ORLY? then it must be rare to most people I know and me. :/

  • @vytong i know alot of people who arent collecters who have them lets not argue here but i fairly sure its not

  • question! i bought one of these for one dollar at a garage sale but i didnt get any games. what does the screen normally do when u turn it on? mine has some ugly colored lines that flash up for a second and then it goes blank again. please help me :O

  • actually it was made to compete with the brick gameboy and atari Lynx not the color

  • @XtremAlien to tell yu the truth the 1st one to have a backlit screen was a SPECIAL gameboy pocket in silver color and it came right after the initial gb pocket back in like what 97 i would imagine,, but i think it may only hav been sold in japan,, anyway it had a backlight,, BUT it was still in black in white so kinda sucked there,,

  • This was made to compete with gbcolor , just gotta say its lokk so much better = D

  • @urbanrivals I thought it was made to compete with the original game boy.. not game boy colour..

  • im gonna buy one tomorrow xD

  • This was my first handheld, and i had the same game, played it a lot when i was around 8, loved it :)

  • Only two more batteries, is that really that much more??

  • Yeah it's bigger... it was also launched 9 years before the Game boy colour... what were you expecting? jeez... hope you were trying to be ironic at least.

  • @jagga0ruba ohhh ye wasnt it released around the time of the super nintendo or sumthing? it was released a few weeks before i was born lol,, so TECHNICALY it competed with the ORIGINAL gameboy NOT the color,,

  • I have a Game Gear, but the screen went without contrast D:

Also I have the Lion King game.

  • A review of the Game Gear but a Mexican Majesco 2001 version. Not the original 1990 version. This version had no support for the TV Tuner. And has no capacitor problems of the early versions.

  • I think people have posted this before but i'll point out again how you made a critical error saying that Game Gear was designed to Compete with Gameboy colour. GBC was realesed in Japan 1 year after the Game Gear was discontinued. However it was made to compete with the original Game Boy and in my opinion after watching this review, the Game Gear is a far more advanced pice of hardwear.

  • i just bought a game gear from ebay, with 5 games, fully boxed with ac adapter and instructions for £40.50...was this a good deal??

  • WTF y r people replying so much? I only asked the guy doing the review if he recommemnded them, and i have a game gear by now.

  • Nice Rewiev Bro,

but the Game Gear wasnt made to compete with Nintendos Game Boy Color. The GBC was released Years and Years later than the Game Gear from Sega. The GG was released with the normal Game Boy and in this Competition the GB lost.

Ok, the GG was bigger than the GB, but the GG had a Color Display, better Sound and a lightend Diyplay, not like the GB

The only negative Thing on the GG was the 6 AA Battries, allowed you to play only 2 Hours :D

  • @MikeVendetta24 I have 6 rechargeable AA batteries, with the charger, so I'm all good!! X3

Plus, can't chuu just buy them? 8)

  • @Berlitz9999

Ya, i know. I buyed also rechargeable AA Batteries, but the first time i got my gg Yearsa ago, i dosnt had them. So, i was disapointed that the normal batteries only hold ca. 2 hours of playing before they got empty :D

And buying all 2 hours some new batteries is real expensive xD

  • @MikeVendetta24 yeah i really want to tell him that in person!

  • @MikeVendetta24 Unless you were near an outlet and had the right adapter. :D

  • 6 AA bateries!!!!!!! holy crap

  • wall mount? you're a retard

  • @bobbyewing311 hes jokeing dumbass

  • The gg was not made to compete with the gbc...

  • the object of the game gear was for the master system to become portable... or that's at least what sega thinks

  • ur so fukkin borin

  • I'm never ever gonna sell mine

  • Dude I want one of these so bad

  • @XtremAlien Battery life is what matters in a handheld :)

  • that is alot of batteries.what a ripoff

  • I just pulled out my old sega game gear for my kids. Have 10 games. Tossed the TV adaptor. Problem - the screen is only visible at one angle now, otherwise looks gray at every other angle. Not comfortable to hold at that one angle. Any idea how to fix it?

  • @ShanaMild all game gears were made with shoddy capacitors, over time they've broken down and leaked usual symtoms are no sound or a dark screen, luckily their very easily fixed you just have to replaced the offending capacitors and it'll work like new, you can google the problem and either find a diy guide or find someone online or ebay who will do it for you (in uk this usualy cost £10-15)

  • @ste022 Thanks Steve - I will look into it. They will think it's great unless they get their hands on a DS at some point (I am sure not giving it to them!)

  • 6 batteries....power house? ...did you mean to say power HOG? lol

  • I've got a Sega Nomad (No Adapter) and it requires the same amount of batteries!

Both of those consoles are power hogs.

  • @XtremAlien true but it died so quickly....the gameboy was like "if it aint broke don't fix it" feel, It was fun had long battery and wasn't meant for like a "real play" it was practically like all handhelds were suppose to be, like for a bathroom or on bus play. So why not black and white if it meant for an hour or 5 seconds, I like the look of the gamegear and had alot of accessories but as a nintendo fan,,,eh you know, plus gamegear was HUGE it made handhelds look stupid

  • dude i bought a game-boy color with pokemon pinball, and a game gear with a power rangers game for 15 bucks i almost shit my pants

  • gamegear was a little bigger than gameboy (not much newer one you show) and was way more powerful and color screen. i'd say slight size difference was way worth it

  • Who cares about size I just care about whether the games are good are not. Don't be so picky.

  • Don't be dissapointed with the fact that it doesn't work with the tv tuner. It's anolog so it doesn't work in America anymore as of June 2009

  • The Gamegear discontinued in 1997 one year before the gameboy color was released in America. So the game gear competed with the original gameboy and later the gameboy pocket

  • This Is HORRIBLE for a game reviewer because there are barely any games, and they are all expensive, but good. This is perfect for an average person because they don't buy every single game. The rate of buying games for each month is 1. And for this, people might buy a new game every few months. I have this, but I will review just the system, and mabye sonic the hedgehog.

  • Shinobi was the best game, I used to play that for days back in the day

  • Still have mine and love it! It was the best portable game system at the time (mine is an original from 1991). I worked at Toys "R" Us at the time so I got to audition all the new games when they came out. :)

  • dude you are an idiot it was made to compet with the gameboy advanced not the game boy color ...

  • @asbeitemu

No, it was made to compete with the original Gameboy. As someone else pointed out, the GG was released in 1990 or thereabouts. The Gameboy Color didn't come out for another eight years and the GBA was 2001 or so. The Game Gear was more or less discontinued around 1997 or '98. Majesco brought the license from Sega and continued to produce it as a budget gaming line, but no new games came out after that.

  • FYI --- The game gear system was never created to compete with the gameboy color. In the world of gaming systems these units were in two different time periods. Comparing with the original Game Boy or an Atari Lynx would be more accurate. OOH I see the comment below already made note of that.

  • i bought one at a car boot with 3 games and 6 recharble batteries and a carry case for £4 or $6

  • i gona get 1 to ply my geneis games on rode thx

  • do you think you spent enough time looking at the box?

  • i dont like the gamegear i played it for only a month and the lcd screen burnt out the original gameboy lasted me like 12 years =l and it's still running

  • The "wall mount" as you call it was to mount the rechargeable battery pack on.

Also I agree with the others. The GameGear was released way before the GameBoy Color was even on the drawing board.

  • the gamegear HAVE a LIGHT IN THE SCREEN , the gameboy color don't.... Game Boy Color for being released nearly 10 years before and don't have light? WTF! ... gamegear is better, ok, the battery duration sucks, is so big, but have a light, fuck u

  • @morillomar it's not that big, like hanf a inch all around larger then the PSP Slim...

  • @morillomar But which console had better GAMES! Gameboy and Gameboy Color is the correct answer.

  • @bmcj199 "It is a matter of opinion" is the correct answer.

  • The Game Gear was my very first gaming experience. My aunt got it for me on my birthday, and I never put the thing down. All I played was Sonic Chaos, Ms. Pac Man, and Streets Of Rage. My father bought me a plug from radio shack, after he saw how quick the thing ate batteries. Then I took it to kindergarten one day, and some kid stole it. My parents ended up getting me the blue Game Gear for christmas, and it came with the Lion King game. Yeah, good times, good times.

  • I just got one of these today with Mortal Kombat and an AC adapter :D

But the previous owner fried the speaker >_>

I think the EXT jack is supposed to have a little block thingy to protect it from dust. That, or the previous owner had a brilliant idea. Lol...

I agree; carrying this brick on your wrist would look retarded. But it is a good system :D

    Good review.4.5/5

  • dude stop bitching about a game thats almost 20 years old. how do you call your self old school gamer when all i heard in this video is how bulky it is. all game systems was about back then was power and game library not slimness and battery life. this system is very very VERY early for its time i guess your just to much of a Nintendo fan boy to look that Sega was the Superior console maker.lets think. game gear. Sega CD. dreamcast. genesis.and characters and games that will last for life times

  • The Game Gear was NOT made to compete with the GameBoy Color....

  • game gear rocks! you suck.. gay boy

  • how much was it

    ?

  • @Xxshinobu12xX alot of money

  • I recently found one in the trash. didnt wrk tho.

  • I still had mine around, Mine's color yellow. And yeah the games compared to the games back then for Nintendo where way better. Especially Sonic The Hedgehog, I love that game.

  • The "wall-mounts on the back you mentioned were actually for the TV tuner and Master system adapter. Choplifter from the Master system sucked on the game gear, but Joe Montana Football was the shit, even though no matter what teams you picked, the jersies were red and blue. It was my ONLY Christmas present in 91, and I wouldn't change a thing... My dad did though after he figured out about battery cost and got me the battery pack. Started about 4 hrs, ended about 45m, and weighed about 8 lbs.

  • I can't believe I was still playing with this thing in 1995-96. 6 AA batteries was ridiculous. I was able to get an AC adapter for it but then one day I tripped over it and snapped the AC plug on the device and it wouldn't turn on afterward. I was sooo sad (still mad about it). Well, I ended up getting a PSX, so I wasn't that sad. I remember my mom was going to rebuy me GameGear, but I told her paying $200 again was too much. My old fat Gameboy is still working.

I loved playing NBA Jam on it.

  • You don't even deserve to touch that piece of art. And has been said the Gameboy Color came out nearly ten years later, heck I wasn't even born when this or my Sega Megadrive came out, but at least I can appreciate this wonderful console.

  • SEGA !!!!!

  • 'Core' means it's a 2001 re-issue of the system by Majesto(?)

  • I'm interested in buying a game gear, do u recommend them?

  • @TheAviator211 no the lcd screen dies out really quick i had one and the screen burnt out in like a month get a gameboy color and a pokemon game they last you for a very long time lol

  • @TheAviator211 you should definitely buy one tho you probably have it by now but game gears were so amazing back in the day i have actually owned every sega console :D

  • @TheAviator211 I don't. Buy a Game Boy Advance SP instead.

  • @TheAviator211 nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  • 5.50 Those thing are for the TV as well - you put in a metal wire and you can rest the GG on the table, then you watch TV :D

  • @Byron10301 yea i heard about that, sounds good

  • i jus found 1 today in mid condition i got 2 find games and clean it

  • wow....don't be an idiot....please! You see that big gray thing next to the gameboy color...THE FIRST GAME BOY! THAT IS WHAT THE GAMEGEAR WAS COMPETING WITH...NOT THE GAME BOY COLOR! I had a game gear back in 1994! The game boy color came out in 1996/7

  • @nextrockstar88 I think was comparing the size.

  • The Game Gear was build to compete with the Original Game Boy not the Game Boy Colour. The GG came out in 1990 and the GBC came out in 1998, almost 10 years latter. Also it was only out for a stranded console life span so offcorse it has less games than a system that was out twice as long.

  • What a tool

  • "made to compete with the gameboy color." are you fucking serious? research before you review, and learn how to review so it doesn't sound like it was done by a nintenfag like yourself

  • lol, mount it to the wall!?!? it was for attachments

  • It sucked batteries like none other, but Sega's hardware was always light years ahead of Nintendo. Nintendo just had better marketing people.

  • It was made to compete with game boy not gb color.
