I clicked dislike, and then afer watching the video I realized you were right about some things, and it's not like you just kept insulting the people who disagreed... I liked the video. The people below this comment (and probably above) are just plain overreacting. For the record, however, my love of Mario games is divided between both 3D AND 2D games.
I've been waiting fora 3D version of the 2D format ever since before the original SMB3! I liked the linear format, but wanted to see it expanded into a world of depth, and the 3D format games were just too all over the place. I think this is great!
My concern is they bought back the tanooki suit but completely forgot why the tanooki suit was awesome--turning into a statue. Honestly the tanooki suit isn't even that big a deal to me and I don't understand why there is such a big emphasis on just one suit--there are other suits in this game.
That is NOT how they are going to do the level selection! I've seen some trailers of this game before and the level selection is alot like the level selection in New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and by that, I mean the REAL level selection for Super Mario 3D land is like the one in both versions of New Super Mario Bros.
In all honesty, most Mario fans don't mind 3d or 2d Mario games. Take Super Mario World and 64, Super Mario 64 sold very well as well as Super Mario World. It was a transition from 2d to 3d so a balance shouldn't be a big worry

Miyamoto has shown support for both 3D & 2D Mario games equally. New Super Mario Bros Wii (& DS) Were amazing. Heck, there is a new super Mario bros title slated for the wii u as well. Clearly he is conscious of these two separate fan bases. This is the only comment I could discredit and everything else seems justified. Although some new gameplay has come out for super Mario 3d land and I must say even though it IS a break from the norm, it still looks like it'll be another AAA game.

I sure hope Nintendo remembers the 2D fans. I was/am so happy about New Super Mario Bros Wii, and was hoping more games like that (okay, maybe a little harder) would be created. I especially love playing them in multi-player mode. I have the two Galaxy games, and while I appreciate them for what they're worth I don't enjoy playing them like I do NSMBW.

You obviously haven't even looked at most of the screens for the game. Over half of the game is 2D! Not all of it is 2D, and that's not a bad thing, but all 3D wouldn't be as good. The idea for this game was variety, short levels and 3D and 2D gameplay switching is exactly what, I think, Will be fun to play.
as a huge fan of both 3D mario and 2D mario myself, i can assure you that while there is obviously people who prefer one over the other, the large majority of the people just like mario. you seem to be making it overly complicated... its a game! why do you care? most of your criticisms seemed to be blowing smoke, as I've seen the screens and the videos and they look funner than some galaxy levels to me. the unique blend of 2D and 3D will kick ass, and thats that. stop complaining and enjoy it.

It seems like you don't understand what this game is meant to be whatsoever. You say you want a 2D Mario game, but then complain about linearity? That doesn't make any sense. And it's not a 3D World Mario Game like 64 or Galaxy, it's the 2D games put into a 3D enviroment. Also, i'm pretty sure they are still making 2D Mario games, if the demo of New Super Mario Bros. Mii is any indication. All in all, quit your bitching that this is something new.
Have they even released the entire game yet? Or are these just your assumptions, based on the few levels that they've released for the public to look at? If that's the case, at least wait until the game is out before you come to conclusions like the ones you've expressed in this video.

3. *cont* They're mainly trying to appeal to everyone, taking the 2D style that works and mixing it with modern 3D art to make a game that's good but in the case of this game it isn't just another New Super Mario Bros because there are 3D environments.
4. Like I said, we aren't in the 80s anymore so making a 2D mario game wouldn't be profitable enough and I myself would feel cheated in buying one at normal price.
5. Please don't compare this to SMG because it is nothing like it beyond 3D.
Well you're entitled to your opinion but I pretty much disagree on all levels.
1. Even the levels that are linear have depth to them that will be amplified by the 3DS plus it gives it a classic mario feel while making the other half of the game fully 3D.
2.The one thing I do agree about in this is that the level do look too short but the game isn't even out yet so we don't even really know how short they are.

As someone who literally grew up with Super Mario (I was 5 yrs old when the original was released for NES) I can say that I definitely agree with your 'concerns.' Totally agree with your two game theory. I say, let HAL Laboratories have a go at a 2D Mario title!
As a side point, the fact that they're using the 'Super Mario Land' title for this game is also a kind of slap in the face to Yokoi-san as well. If Nintendo wanted to use that title, then at least make a game resembling his creation.

I played the demo at a game expo in Switzerland, this is easily one of the most disappointing games ever. Levels are extremely short, easy, linear and uninspired and the movement is slow. Also, the invincible Tanooki suit and insta-win P-Wing are just sad and show that Nintendo is just cathering to casuals now.
@n00bdrummer if u wasnt so bad at the game u wouldn't need the invincible tanooki suit or the p-wing. the levels are short for a reason, it's not supposed to be like galaxy with long levels, its suppose to go back to its roots with short, fun levels. its only linear if u go the regular way, if u would try to get the star coins and look for secrets, it would be more of a challange like miyamoto said. and the demo only had 4 levels not every level is going to be easy.
@n00bdrummer Well I played it at Euro gamer and I was impressed. the visuals were great, the movement was fine to me and the levels looked great. The only problem is that the levels did feel short, I am hoping it was for Demo purposes.

I grew up with mario since 87 and playing the different reincarnacions of mario games over the years, I wouldnt say that I like 3D or 2D differently. All in all its still running n jumping regardless. Theres somethings that I like about the 3D mario games and theres things that I like about the 2D ones. What keeps me coming back to mario?-. The characters, personality, charm, and simplicity of gameplay. Its the experience of his world that I get to play in that keeps me coming back.
I believe that they're making this game "3d and play like 2d" mostly because all of the other handheld Marios were 2d. However, it's a 3DS so they would have to implement 3d like levels that are more or less linear because linearity would simulate 2d.

Dude its not a 3D mario game like the ones on the consoles, its a 3D 2D mario game, meaning its just a 2D mario game(such as new super mario bros) but with 3D movement/styles( such as 3D areas like super mario 64,sunshine, etc.) So its basicly both of them mashed up, Miamoto saud it was to appeal to the people who think its too hard to not have a linear gameplay such as 64 galaxy, sunshine etc and trust me theres alot of people like that, so he did this to sell even more.
Considering this video is outdated and there are now videos out, I suggest redoing this video with actual gameplay footage and see if you can address the same concerns you did here, as anyone who tries to argue with you on this can't, as most of these "concerns" of yours are almost voided by the actual gameplay itself.

The way I see it is that a videogame is a work of interactive art and that it should be allowed to have variety. Sometimes a videogame will be full of short, linear levels and this is okay, as is with all other kinds of gameplay styles.
I know this video is an older one but I wanted to post anyway.
As long as it is fun and not full of creapy spiritist-type stuff like weegee boards and excercisims then I'm good to go.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice the linearity. I think it seems out of place in a 3D Mario game. At least in Galaxy the planets in every direction made it feel like a galaxy. I'm sure it will be fun, since it is a Mario game (*forgets about Sunshine*), but the linearity in such a lush 3D world is offputting and feels claustrophobic, especially the Boom Boom arena. SMB3 had more fighting space than that.
i like ANY mario game... scratch that. i like ANY mario game that ISNT mario's time machine or mario is missing. but anyways i like the games from the VERY cool mario galaxy 2 all the way to a not very liked game like mario 2. yeah i like mario 2, sue me. my point is, i dont care if it's 2D or 3D, as long as it's NOT educational. im happy with it

It seems like you don't understand what this game is meant to be whatsoever. You say you want a 2D Mario game, but then complain about linearity? That doesn't make any sense. And it's not a 3D World Mario Game like 64 or Galaxy, it's the 2D games put into a 3D enviroment. Also, i'm pretty sure they are still making 2D Mario games, if the demo of New Super Mario Bros. 3. *cont* They're mainly trying to appeal to everyone, taking the 2D style that works and mixing it with modern 3D art to make a game that's good but in the case of this game it isn't just another New Super Mario Bros because there are 3D environments.
4. Like I said, we aren't in the 80s anymore so making a 2D mario game wouldn't be profitable enough and I myself would feel cheated in buying one at normal price.
5. Please don't compare this to SMG because it is nothing like it beyond 3D.

Well you're entitled to your opinion but I pretty much disagree on all levels.
1. Even the levels that are linear have depth to them that will be amplified by the 3DS plus it gives it a classic mario feel while making the other half of the game fully 3D.
2.The one thing I do agree about in this is that the level do look too short but the game isn't even out yet so we don't even really know how short they are.
3. We aren't in the 80s anymore so making a 2D game isn't going to happen *continued*

1: Mario is supposed to be linear to some degree. Hell, even a game like Super Mario Galaxy is linear to a degree!

As someone who literally grew up with Super Mario (I was 5 yrs old when the original was released for NES) I can say that I definitely agree with your 'concerns.' Totally agree with your two game theory. I say, let HAL Laboratories have a go at a 2D Mario title!
As a side point, the fact that they're using the 'Super Mario Land' title for this game is also a kind of slap in the face to Yokoi-san as well. If Nintendo wanted to use that title, then at least make a game resembling his creation.

2. NSMBW and Mario All-Stars are sorta new, and both great games. If the 2D Mario fans only liked the gameplay, then there is a bunch of other platformers for them.

I played the demo at a game expo in Switzerland, this is easily one of the most disappointing games ever. Levels are extremely short, easy, linear and uninspired and the movement is slow. Also, the invincible Tanooki suit and insta-win P-Wing are just sad and show that Nintendo is just cathering to casuals now.

@n00bdrummer if u wasnt so bad at the game u wouldn't need the invincible tanooki suit or the p-wing. the levels are short for a reason, it's not supposed to be like galaxy with long levels, its suppose to go back to its roots with short, fun levels. its only linear if u go the regular way, if u would try to get the star coins and look for secrets, it would be more of a challange like miyamoto said. and the demo only had 4 levels not every level is going to be easy.

I grew up with mario since 87 and playing the different reincarnacions of mario games over the years, I wouldnt say that I like 3D or 2D differently. All in all its still running n jumping regardless. Theres somethings that I like about the 3D mario games and theres things that I like about the 2D ones. What keeps me coming back to mario?-. The characters, personality, charm, and simplicity of gameplay. Its the experience of his world that I get to play in that keeps me coming back.

I believe that they're making this game "3d and play like 2d" mostly because all of the other handheld Marios were 2d. However, it's a 3DS so they would have to implement 3d like levels that are more or less linear because linearity would simulate 2d.

Dude its not a 3D mario game like the ones on the consoles, its a 3D 2D mario game, meaning its just a 2D mario game(such as new super mario bros) but with 3D movement/styles( such as 3D areas like super mario 64,sunshine, etc.) So its basicly both of them mashed up, Miamoto saud it was to appeal to the people who think its too hard to not have a linear gameplay such as 64 galaxy, sunshine etc and trust me theres alot of people like that, so he did this to sell even more.

The way I see it is that a videogame is a work of interactive art and that it should be allowed to have variety. Sometimes a videogame will be full of short, linear levels and this is okay, as is with all other kinds of gameplay styles.
I know this video is an older one but I wanted to post anyway.
As long as it is fun and not full of creapy spiritist-type stuff like weegee boards and excercisims then I'm good to go.
I think they chose linear appearing levels to show off the 3DS's depth.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice the linearity. I think it seems out of place in a 3D Mario game. At least in Galaxy the planets in every direction made it feel like a galaxy. I'm sure it will be fun, since it is a Mario game (*forgets about Sunshine*), but the linearity in such a lush 3D world is offputting and feels claustrophobic, especially the Boom Boom arena. SMB3 had more fighting space than that.
