I got confirmed too and when I did I legitimately believed in god but about 6 to 7 months later I started to question his/her existence(eventually coming to the conclusion I don't believe in god). My parents kinda flipped their shit too when I came out. My dad talked about bringing me to a priest to set me straight(which he never did). They're used to it now but still don't like it when I criticize the church. I think my mom tried the no presents thing on me too which I was fine with.

Jeez, now I'm scared to come out as an atheist. Granted, my parents don't seem as "fire and brimstone" Catholic as this mother, but you can't be sure.

Perhaps from her point of view she was afraid that her child was going to hell, and that she failed as a Christian and a mother. I'm not saying that's all of why she flipped, but I think it may be part of it.

Although my mother has tried to be supportive of me and my atheism, she can go crazy if I try to be to open about it. She had a week meltdown when I told her my plan to get the atomic A over my heart.

Now I understand why so many christians are fucked up beyond belief. The roots is built upon bribery, fear, domination, submission, brainwashing... Again I say - thank god I'm an atheist! If I weren't, I would probably be buddhist - most chillax religion I ever saw, and nicest community I ever had the pleasure to meet. Nicer than some atheists I met, and definitively nicer than the average christian.

@nippleninja77 I agree. I was raised catholic and confirmed when I was 13. I didn't start questioning my beliefs until I was at least 16 or 17. If confirmation was at age 18, I would have been questioning my beliefs for a sufficient amount of time by that point that I would have said no. But as it was, I wouldn't have been allowed to graduate and go to high school if I wasn't confirmed. Yet the whole time, they kept telling us it was our choice.

Even when I believed, I never agreed with the catholic church's stance on abortion and thought chastity rules were bullshit(ie. unfair to those who didn't want to get married). Almost 12 years later and I still don't believe in god.

Oh gosh. That scared me. It bring back the horrible memories about when my mother found out me and my dad were atheists. I'm almost on the verge of tears after just 46 seconds.
Not as much cursing and in the face, but I cried harder than ever.
Having you parents hate you (or it seems like that) is a very traumatic experience for a child.

When I "came out" as an atheist I don't think anyone really noticed or cared. The main response was "oh", my parents are christian and they just said "right, but you didn't answer my question...what time will you be home from work?"

@TheVoid. i go to a Church of the Nazarene (Jesus was a Nazarene--from Nazareth) but i don't only endorse Nazarenes; i know there are many good churches out there. if you want to know a little more, you can check out their official Church of the Nazarene website. sorry, if i offended you. i know i'm a little bit of a "religious snob" which i attribute it to my upbringing in a dead church. UGH! this is NOT how a Christian should act, i'm sorry to say. God's still working on me.

too bad she didn't take her child to a real church. he would have loved it and would have loved God (and she would have too!), but they evidently belong to a dead church (like the one i was raised in). i can't blame the kid for not believing in God when he's been exposed to false teachings. why don't people read their Bibles and find out for themselves instead of trusting a place that calls themselve a "church."

@TheVoid: there are no bishops or priests at my church; those are primarily a catholic thing, and the catholic church has been dead for centuries, if not mellenia. having grown up in a church that teaches false doctrine, i was able to recognize it after i picked up the Bible for myself. this kid has been raised in a DEAD church. like i said, had he been raised in a real church, he would love church and love God and love his mama, and she wouldn't talk like a sailor!

Dousing in gasoline and setting them on fire or disfiguring and blinding with acid is especially common. It's been documented over and over--there's tons of info about it on the web. How can you deny it?

If you reread my comments I never said that it did--only that violent religious intolerance (including honor killings) is very high in Islamic countries. I never said it's advocated in the Koran--I simply don't have enough knowledge of the Koran to make that claim.
