Miami Vice was so "of its time", and although it now seems a bit cheesy in places, I absolutely love it, the music linked to all the "slow mo's", clothes, cars and the "pads".I was hooked from the first episode (first time around) and I now have every episode on DVD, and we have just started to watch them again with our 13 yr old son who thinks its "sick" (thats cool to you and me).Scenes like this one still manage to raise every neck hair !!!.These were good times.
Michael Mann was way ahead of his time. I love how he always had an awesome back ground to every seen. One scene when LT. Castillo was wearing all black on a white sand beach, just too awesome!
As a Fort Lauderdale native, and fresh out of collage, I remember many times standing on the beach near Biscayne Blvd and watching them shoot "Miami Vice" scenes. Those were great times and it was great music:)
I too remember this video when it aired! I loved this episode so much I recorded it on my dad's Betamax back(LOL) then! I agree with all the posters here..The show just blew me away! Miami Vice was absolutely one of the ALL TIME BEST EVER sitcoms made for tv!! I always looked forward to Friday! That was Miami Vice night..everything stopped for that hour! No sitcom thus far has matched it yet!!!!!
Great upload! One of the best highlights of the week was watching Miami Vice. We would spend a half hour preparing for it..we'd go for a beer run and make popcorn, cheese and crackers....it was like being at the movies..it was THAT good!
Something I love about this clip: in the last ten seconds or so the camera pulls back, revealing a wider world, and the music takes a darker turn (I'm no musician, but I think the notes shift to minor key?), lending an edge to this otherwise heroic sequence. The boat, initially so powerful and so fast, is suddenly swallowed up by miles of ocean. The men inside the boat become tiny and vulnerable before disappearing from view. Beautiful, tense, poetic moment.
@vermillionsands you did a great job. Sorry someone jacked your clip thats low.
Still not as bad as me, former yt mv superfan ( 600SELV12 ) I had several mv montages. yt closed my account full of miami vice material. i lost interest & stopped making them.
This moment is when I got completely hooked on this show, it was so new and innovating at that time. Nobody really understood what was up with showing us pretty images of beaches and sunsets and playing popular rocksongs in the middle of a TV show but it worked and revolutionized television completely from that point on. Thank you all for that MV crew and cast
Just puts a smile on my face...Remembering the best decade to date...Remembering the "MTv Cops." ... Miami Vice was the only cop show during that time, that touched such a large age range because was so damn cool.
I remember watching miami vice every week, from the start, when I was a teenager. Damn I miss the 80's. There, I said it. lol. This, in my opinion, was/is one of the best tv shows ever! I still watch it on my days off from work. Bought season 1 when I was in iraq in '05. That made life better. lol.
Ah...the days of non-ethanol gas! I remember meeting DJ in 1988 or 1989 in Sarasota, FL at a Wellcraft show. He is one cool dude. The days of the powerboat for the 'common man' may be over, but I will forever live vicariously through these videos. Damn I miss the 80's!!
@tfort100 wish I could see a montage like this at least one more time on prime time tv . Yeah you're right DJ was/is the man - only a few actors could pull this off so perfectly... P.S. even with the perfect trim PMT still looked sea sick (must of been his first time out). Great scene and song.
Such a cool scene! I saw Don Johnson driving an offshore racing boat in real life. If you watch that boat crossing the ocean, it shows that he knows what he is doing. Perfect trim and bounce crossing those waves!! I love it!
nothing today is as good as it was in the 80s.......TV,Music,Style,jobs,economy it all fell apart after the 80s and now look where we are........in desperation of everything ...
@excelerater it is the nature of every empire toe ventually self destruct. who builds empires? People, common people. the ones elected to leadership are made up of people , but youve heard the term of absolute power corrupts, when the people in charge start robbing for everyone to stay in power , empires fall apart.
How true your comments are - could not have put them better myself. I was watched this great television program in the early 80's in Sydney Australia 21yo then - another great place at the time - all now just a distant memory. Aussie TV is now SHIT - this program would out rate anything we are watching now. Don sets the unchallenged standard. Bring back this old classic.
It's cheesy NOW, but allow for passage of time.Back then, it was considered cutting edge. Now u can look at MV as an Eighties version of Starsky and Hutch. Both shows even jumped the shark at the same time, around season 3.
Probabally one of my favorate moments of the first season if not the entire series. This episode finished off the whole story arc with the murder of Tubbs' brother.
The three episodes of this arc (Brother's Keeper, Calderone's Return: Part 1, Calderone's Return: Part 2) are extremely engaging, and this opening scene is brilliant in the way it shows flashbacks from all the hard times they've had. Of course the choice of music is impeccable. All of the past events lead up to this awesome moment.
So friggin' cool.Time and place.I think a new version would fly, but NOT like the awful movie. Can't believe Micheal Mann screwed that up, he was the original showrunner w/Tony Yerkovich.
I´ve just watched this chapter in DVD... but there´s a very surprising thing: the scenes of the boat are exactly the same, but the other ones (the shootings) appear simetrically, like if it were seen in a mirror. WHY????
Hey, I watch it for the cheesy lines. They're classic. Miami Vice was the very first show in the history of television to bring motion picture production values to a television production. They sprayed the streets with water at night to make them glisten for the cameras and its own composer--Jan Hammer. And, they were the very first to use songs from the actual bands. All other shows up to that point used lame ass cover bands.
"You Heard Right" this is the best intro to all Miami Vice episodes. Cigarette boat ride to the Bahamas set to Russ Ballard's Voices is awesome. I remember seeing this original episode back in 1984 and was like Wow... WTF did I just watch. Tubbs looked sea sick riding shotgun as the Chris Craft Stinger blasted through those 3 ft waves full throttle. Really great. Thx for posting.
Still one of the coolest TV series ever... i refuse to watch the movie remake, it couldn't be as cool as the show even if i appreciate Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as actors.
Miami Vice it's a place and a time, that could not be repeated. Love it.
Amazing how the music at that time(which was fantastic anyhow) is blended into most if not all Miami Vice episodes. Not to mention Jan Hammer and Tim Truman later on in the series.Marvellous use of great, period music. Groundbreaking show, girls, cars, clothes, music, settings etc etc etc..Never be a series like this ever again. Guest star list is pretty impressive also, many big names...Simply outstanding Miami Vice.
Out Where The Buses Don't Run and Definitely Miami are another two outstanding episodes with totally apt songs...check them out...superb!!! Miami Vice forever!!!
@vermillionsands Totally agreed, This and the intro to A bullet for crockett (Season 4) had the best pre-titles intro. This and crocketts theme are the most played songs in my car.
the show was pure Art. Some kids made a tribute of this, with a real boat and everything. Its pretty cool actually. With a great cut of this same song. Do a search of: Miami Vice 2 voices in the night
@StarshipMaxima Yeah mon I'm just digging on that reverse sunset as Crockett and Tubbs were making their way to St. Andrews in the Bahamas off the "East" coast of Florida. Wrap your mind around that one!... Yeah mon!
@StarshipMaxima I hear ya - but you can't sail off into the sunset in Miami - it's an eastern coast. So you'll have to get up early in the morning to do it.
@wvd1979 It's just so classic 80's and anyone who grew up in the 80's or is old enough to remember watching this show during the 80's knows exactly what I'm talking about. What is it about this show and the 80's that just kicks so much ass?!
