Hey I'm tossing up the idea of either getting one of these VGA leads / boxes or getting someone to modify one of my casts to internally fit a VGA port. But it's hassle + risk to the cast so the VGA lead / box would be the best option if the picture quality is clear because I've read around that the only VGA box to deliver a perfect VGA signal is the official one, and only way to get the same quality is to hard mod it in. Just wondering if this cable you got here was good quality? Cheers, Mike.
I used to have have my Dreamcast hooked up to a Sony 22" CRT with a VGA box. Some games looked good crystal clear (usually cartoony ones), other games looked TOO sharp, even ugly: jaggy lines, too pixelated, unblended textures, like Soul Calibur for instance. Made me feel like I was playing on an emulator on the PC. I went back to S-video on a standard def TV. S-video is sharper than composite, which is nice, but not overly sharp like VGA so you still get some smoothing out of the graphics
It can't output 800x600 since the Dreamcast resolution is 640x480 native... Please don't lie to sell your product, you'll sell more if you tell the truth
The narrator fucked up. mobocable does not exist. He means monoprice
And yeah, monoprice is legit. I get my goods from there. firefold is also good. Firefold makes custom setups like DVI2HDMI with 3.5mm jacks on each end.
Nope. This cable replaces the video cable and goes into the video port.
The coder's cable goes into the serial port, which is located to the right of video port, just below the power plug. The other end of coder's cable runs into the RS232 port of PC, if you have one. If you don't. you can get a USB ->RS232 adapter for like 3-4$ from Hongkong shops like Dealextreme.
it's 480p , the same resolution as wii , and better than ps2 , anyway , dreamcast has autosmoothing , even if games run at 320x240 it looks like its using high resolution , its like antialiasing...
I can not recall seing a single game using its 2xHAA mode, everything just runs un-antialiased. It is rather heavy on performance, so one could only use it on scenes with little geometry and depth complexity. OTOH it didn't use much extra memory.
The video output has a 3-tap vertical flicker filter, which is basically the same quality as on GameCube - PS2 doesn't have such. Basically all games have this mode enabled in interlaced video mode, disabled in VGA mode as it's unnecessary there.
never , ps2 max resolution ins 480p , but i think ( i think ) it uses antialiasing ( something like 4x ) in games that require it , anyway , it's not as close to the autosmoothing on dreamcast , because autosmoothing doesn't only remove aliasing , it make hair look better and some other features...
PS2 has a programmable video signal generator, which can be used to generate a wide range of resolutions, something like 1024x720 into a 720p component output should be possible. However, i don't think you'll find any game being able to do that. PS2 doesn't have antialiasing hardware, but antialiasing could be implemented with a software trick, if there is fillrate left. Real fillrate is quite low, so complex games are limited to 640x240 or even lower. Such res induces texture sampling faults.
This one does give you the 800x600 res just to FYI. Its not like the others that just fakes it, and can hook up more then one console to the adapter. Its the real deal, and only has a input for a dc only, no others can be hooked up. As I mentioned my video doesnt really show how great it looks in person because Im using a camera, but in person, it looks great, and I have the other type your thinking of, and there is a world of difference in the video quality.
the dreamcast has a 640x480p output in vga, so it really doesn't matter if you have a box that supports more.
vga IS the way to play though. and as for those 10% of games that don't work, more than half of those can be "tricked" to vga if you use a bootdisk like the DC-X first. Even if your game is the same region as your dreamcast, if vga doesn't work, put in a bootdisk first & you might get lucky (there's a list of "trickable" games on the web)
@r8qt7 The regular VGA boxes you can use on PS2/Xbox/etc would just take the composite signal and convert it to VGA. This adapter cable (and other Dreamcast VGA boxes) do enable the VGA mode on the Dreamcast itself.
Plus it is cheap. I got mine recently with 3 regular controllers, two arcade sticks, two VMUs, a gun, two keyboards (for two player typing of the dead), and about 100 games (not including the emulated NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Sega Master System games that add up to 2000+) for $100. If you like sprite based fighters or shooters, there is no better system. It is the only way to play MVC2 at home. My buddy has a 360 and still comes over to play the DC. It is a great toy.
Craigs list. Most of the games were burned, but it takes a lot of time to find, download and burn. The guy must have spent hours getting those together. It took me more than a month to "complete" the collection. Plus CD's don't get damaged like GD roms, and I have backups on my HD.
I screwed up that Dreamcast trying to solder in the VGA connector. Got back on craigs list and found a replacement with two guns, a madcatz controller, an original controller and a mad catz memory card for $11!
OMFG ITS FEAR FACTORY,i didnt know demolition had the track on there, the FF track is called @demolition racer@ ....FF are my fave band and i like them more now TY
I've been meaning to ressurect my old DC. Ofcourse, now I have new equipment, an HDTV and an A/V receiver that has component inputs. Unfortunately, I need a VGA to component transcoder for progressive scan video, which are available for 120$ on the net. I guess you gotta pay the cost to be the boss.
You dont get to select a res like you do with a pc, it will just run at 620x480P, but on a pc monitor, it will look very good, much better then any regular tv can produce.
Well im not the guy you bought it from. I was hired to make videos for them of their products. You will have to contact 4triangles directly and ask them I am afraid. BUT if I was a betting man, Id say you got a bad cable going from the unit to the pc monitor if it is giving you a blue screen. Also make sure all your cables are installed right, and if you have to force the cable into the unit, you should of had to, check to make sure no cables are bent, or broken off, in the cable as well.
The lines you see on the screen now are caused by the camera I used to film this, the picture itself is line free, and it really looks like a PC game, clean, clear, colors pop, no dot crawl, its just something you have to see in person, and then you will go "Holy shite, that looks sweet!"
Those are as good as the ones I mentioned below that just pump regular video to your pc monitor. This one is a dedicated VGA adapter, no svideo or rca outs, and that means true, upscaled picture.
Sorry for deleting your reply, they need to move the remove button away from the reply button, Im always deleting replies on them all, and I feel bad.
I have the VGA Box, and all my games look phenomenal. I played through A/v then switched over to VGA...yeah there is a big difference. More Deatils, and Vastly vibrant colors. the games I've played that have had the biggest difference would have to be Spawn in the Demon's Hand, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur(especially this one),Grandia 2, Resident Evil CV, and Dead or Alive 2. The 10% of the games that don't work on VGA, actually aren;t that great. All the popular titles, work through VGA
Not true, there are some really cheap ones on ebay that does other consoles at the same time that do noting more then put a standard video on your pc screen that looks like crap with dot crawl and out of focus. You need to be sure the one you buy actually does upscale the console your trying to use. The only 3 I know of that does true up scale are like this one only for the dc, one only for the Xbox, and xbox 360, that were built to give true upscale to a monitor.
Other ones that claim they can do more then one unit at a time, and "upscale" to your monitor, are lying, it will just be standard video, and it will look like poo. dont waste your money one ones like that, get ones that you can do a search on that does upscale a true upscale. I can attest that with the dc, xbox and 360 just look outstanding on a pc monitor. I am going to make a game station some day for my kids running all three to a monitor in a case like a arcade, some day.
I would never do this otherwise, but I have to say the VGA box (unsure about the cable) makes the Dreamcast phenomenal. It is a must have for anyone still serious about the little red-spiral.
I dont have any affilation with the company, 4traiangle, other then on a business sense to shoot their products, and I was sooooooo sold when I hooked it up. I have tried others that supposedly make it work on your pc monitor and have dot crawl, and look god awful, I was floored when I saw it, if it wasnt for the low res of the dc, it looks as good color wise, and in focus as the one I use to play my 360 on my monitor. I was very happy, and for the price, well worth it IMO.
Only down side would be some of the older dc games dont support it, prolly around 10% of the games for it will give you a menu that tells you the game doesnt support the cable you have plugged in. But for the other 90%, its just frekin sweet.
I need to also mentio that you can even use your pc speaker line out from your sound card to this unit. that way you just unplug your pc green line from line out of your card, and plug that into the unit to use for your sound as well. Or can even buy a cheap powered pc speaker set and put next to the monitor your using. Makes a great, cheap, game station for you,, or you kids if you have any :)
