  • Recently, I read a few articles about pipe tobacco smoking. I never smoke but It doesn't mean I never tried b4 .. I was thinking to start puffing around though it looks cool indeed :D .. I just hope I will be able to find any legit shop around here b'cos I don't see any.

  • Hello, when I was a kid I remember I use to watch watch my great grandfather smoking his pipe tobacco. He was extremely old and amazingly, can walk of his own. But if it wasn't because of accident, he fell his back onto on the floor. Then he suffered physical complications later on. He died at the age of 99 just a few more months until he reach the age of 100. And my father hid his favorite pipe tobacco as a remembrance.

  • man, thumbs up for Prodigy ;)

  • @bennymick79 make sure the pipe is made from briar and that the seller has a good reputation!

  • I think that the key word in this article is moderation. Like they say, alcohol is good with moderation, and so would be pipe tobacco. Studies should be made about smoking pipe tobacco and its effect on health.

  • Was listening to that song just before watching this vid. Wouldn't have thought you liked the Prodigy. Nice.

  • This is a great Prodigy song. If you like the Beastie Boys, there's a great Prodigy/B.Boys mash-up somewhere here on Youtube. My friends sometimes give me a hard time for listening to hip-hop while I smoke my pipe. You probably get similar reactions to your choice of smoking music.

  • Love the hat!

  • Prodigy rules! I remember when "Smack my bitch up" came out. I was like I think 9 maybe 10. I thought he was saying "Snap my picture", though he does say that at one point I thought it was all he said lol. Prodigy is actually about the only electronic I will listen to. Eisbrecher is kind of electronic rock I'd say and I love them.

  • @essy yes, it is just so pleasurable to vomit after inhaling all of that smoke. Pipe tobacco is completely different from cigarette tobacco and is not meant to be inhaled. Sip it like a fine coffee.

  • oops, sorry to chris11sholtz, I clicked the thumbs down button by accident, and YouTube doesn't allow you to undo. I've read similar studies for cigar smokers. Smoke in moderation, don't inhale, increased risks from what I've read seem to be nominal. As with all things, risk increases with use...common sense.

  • I'm having trouble inhaling on my pipe can you give me some pointers please, I know the health risks please help me I want the pleasure taste of inhaling

  • don't inhale

  • @Essy7887 Many pipe smokers don't inhale. I don't for sure. Its all about the taste.

  • electronic seems to be more popular in mainland europe than in the uk

  • PipeFriendCHS,

I've read that article and what I got from it was the mortality rate for stress (which pipe smoking helps reduce greatly) is much greater than the kinds of cancers that affect pipe smokers. If you smoke a pipe and use a decent air purifier in your home (I'm going to pick up a Honeywell w/ HEPA filter in a week or two), the secondary smoke isn't really an issue, and as long as you get checked regularly for oral cancer, you'll be much better off than a non-smoker.

    PS: luv the vids

  • Hey ya gotta go some time!I have lived a lot i have children and grand children.I smoke a pipe,i have lots of nice pipes,i am healthy,i walk,i run,i lift,i keep up with my grand kids!(And i dont worry as much as i used to.)

  • I'm a full on lover of all things tobacco. I smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars, use snuff, chew tobacco, you name it. Anything. So, I'm pretty sure that that article isn't true for me!

  • My guess would be that pipe smokers have a finer taste for things and perhaps eat better. I think enjoying life makes you live longer too. There's so many statistics where there is no contol like you would have in a scientific experiment yet they state these things as scientific fact.

  • Comment removed

  • those studies are actually true. the U.S. surgeon general did three different studies over the years, and all three found the same thing. as long as you don't get mouth cancer (and the increased risk for mouth cancer while smoking pipes (at 4 bowls a day) is 9 to 12% higher than non smokers, which isn't bad at all) practically no increased risk for lung cancer, or heart desease.

  • I think anything (natural) in moderation is OK. I do think nicotine can be beneficial to health, like caffeine can be. But, once again, only in moderation. I only smoke my pipes when i'm REALLY stressed, or on the weekends. and I only smoke 1-2 bowls on those weekend days.

  • thats how i am man i only light up the pipe on the roof when i have a really crumy week, i also only smoke cigars on special holidays like new years or 4th of july, gotta say theres nothin to me like sitting on the roof and just relaxing and thinking about everything

  • Actually saw the Prodigy at Glastonbury Festival this year while smoking a pipe. Was damn good, I'll say that much.

Also, I like that theory, let's run with it and pretend we're snobby and superior.

  • the article sounds legit to me.

  • I CANT BELIEVE YOU LIKE THE PRODIGY! I LOVE THE PRODIGY! They come to the US for their tour and i just can not wait to see them in chicago!

  • I bought my first prodigy record in 1991, in their house music phase.

  • im seeing them in late may. you should check out the tour for the new album and go to one near you!

  • what kind of pipe is that

  • It is in the video: A text box pops up in blue

  • Hi,

super video! Maybe it is not true, that pipe smokers live longer, but they live better, that's for shure.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Cheers, Dieter

P.S.: On YouTube I see a lot of american pipe smokers do inhalate the smoke instead of puffing. This guys do not live longer, I belive.

  • will be responding soon when i hv the time as i hd a request to mk a vid on this topic,,still running sm test upon the validity of the infos

    cheers

    ahmad

  • Pipe smoking is a habit of those likely to live longer any way. Their longevity is not due to pipe smoking but because of their character. Pipe smoking is indicative of someone who seeks not instant gratification but values quality. Such a person also takes care of what he eats, who he acquaints with etc. To smoke a pipe you must be relaxed or you will not enjoy it. So relaxed and contended men live longer.

  • That is an interesting philosophy.

  • I think that this is a more rational concept.

  • The article did seem reasonable to me. Although it just sounds like a sails pitch to increase the amount of pipe smokers the suggestions they give to be a "healthy smoker" do seem to make sense

  • My introduction to pipe smoking was thoroughly enjoyable, but extremely short lived. I had an inexpensive briar pipe and an aromatic blend from my local tobacconist. It was fantastic. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on who you ask) for me, my wife thought otherwise.

  • I'd love to have the answer to number 3. Some peop,e who commented argue that it provides stress relief

  • One should ALWAYS be suspicious when it is claimed that "several studies show that..." In fact, I consider the mere presence of that phrase an indication of little to no reliability - to put it mildly. The reader doesn't know how many studies, how were they conducted (if at all) and by whom, if they followed sound scientific and statistic procedures, how they were financed, etc. This is definitely a kind of statement that should NEVER be taken at face value.

  • I think taking care of yourself emotionally and physically has more of an effect than anything else. It's all relative in my opinion. Everything in moderation is key, its part of the art of life. I also believe genes play a huge role in your overall health. If you're a pipe smoker, go to the dentist twice a year vs one. Communicate with your doctor, be open about your vices and listen and CARE for your body. By that I mean smoke in moderation and be aware of signs of potential illness.

  • Good points! I upped my dentist schedule to 4 times a year

  • Very well stated!

    -Ken

  • hey I really like that pipe what type is it?

  • I added the info your requested to the text box at the beginning

  • i always get a kick out of medical reports that say "the mortality rate is higher in----- population than ----- population." i hate to say it but despite the best efforts of doctors worldwide the mortality rate is still 100%... no one gets out alive :D hehehe. anyway, the longevity of pipe smokers could be attributed to the fact that they tend to slow down and take time to relax rather than just going full stress all the time. attitude plays a huge role in how long someone tends to live.

  • Well, all pipe smokers I know (in real the world and not online) are cool, relax, this must be the only reason of why they may live longer than other

  • For those interested in pursuing the issue further, the Seattle Pipe Club's website has a couple of very interesting articles on pipe smoking and health-related issues.

  • Thanks man for the nod on the article. It has always been my " corner stone " article that I use as defense.

    Thanks again,

    Eric

PS - I am going bald...so those hats are like shot of whiskey on a cold night.

  • Interesting article. I do agree with the stress reduction aspect of pipe smoking though. That may outweigh the negative aspects of our own second hand smoke, even if we smoke in a ventilated area, which is in real life not always possible. And, as a former cigarette smoker I don't feel the health effects from pipe smoking that I did when I smoked cigs. I don't inhale my pipes, so that is probably the main reason. We make our own choices in life, and I choose to smoke a pipe regardless.

  • Nice hat... :)

I don't know what I should think about. Maybe that the guy is right and pipe smokers may live longer (unless they inhale the smoke). Who knows? I do probably not...

    Cheers

    Lars

  • I think this study is on to something. While physical health risks may be present in pipe smoking, the psychological benefits seem to out weigh the risks.

  • I have heard this paradox attributed to "pipe lifestyle" before. The average pipe smoker may simply be more affluent (better: health care, diet, etc.). The mental/physical relaxation and stress relief of the activity could be a factor as well. Such a laid-back lifestyle may also result in "less" risky behaviors.

My wife still isn't buying it.

Since most pipe smokers pick-up the "hobby" as older adults... wouldn't this skew such conclusions on mortality? (non-pipe-smokers die at all ages)

  • In 1964 the surgeon general done a report, and i think that Pipe smokers do live longer than other tobacco users

  • The studies were done in the sixties. Pipe smoking was much more popular then, and many college age guys picked it up. There wasn't as much of a population skew as there would be today.

Also, the study showing that pipe smokers lived longer than nonsmokers didn't show statistical significance between the two groups. I would interpret that as showing that pipe smokers lived as long as nonsmokers, and not necessarily that the former outlived the latter.

    -Ken

  • WOO prodigy is the best I'm loving what i've heard from their new album

  • Post hoc fallacy.

More often than not if you hit 80 and you know you're gone any time now you take up unhealthy habits. You wouldn't say that streets that are congested do more business because they are congested.

  • Actually, most 80 year olds don't take up unhealthy habits. If fact they do whatever they can to keep going.

And streets that are congested DO do more business, which is why they are congested in the first place.

    -Ken

  • 1) neither of us have evidence, but I'd like to take my side as a preference. I mean I guess it's just as likely.

    2)That was my point.

  • if i live to 100 i will still love living --as long as i can smoke and have fun..

  • The twin experiment was done by Albert Enstine on more than one try and always the pipe smoker lived longer.

  • That hat is awesome, i am very jealous of it!!!

  • check out Prodigy at Ultra Music Festival 09 in Miami next month man, should be absolutely sick

  • As long as one can do what one loves, life is worth it. Who cares about being 100 years old and enjoying nothing?

  • "As long as one can do what one loves, life is worth it. Who cares about being 100 years old and enjoying nothing?"

A surprising number of 100 year olds!

Besides, it's not just longevity. Try enjoying life at 60 with a heart attack or a stroke under your belt. Most smoking-related health issues are cardiovascular, not cancer.

    -Ken

P.S. : My previous comment was directed only at Bill's (PipeDreamsInc) comments, not at the general viewership here.

  • The data Mark quotes has been around for years and is brought up often when discussing risks of pipe smoking. If you separate out primary pipe smokers (noninhalers) from the inhalers, the rate of fatal cancers is higher in the latter group, on a par with cigarette smokers. The noninhalers get nonfatal cancers, but die at approx the same rate as nonsmokers. There is no data on whether pipe smoking as a stress reducer increases longevity. Folks respond to stress in both good and bad ways.

    -Ken

  • Love the hat where did you get that from.

  • LOL from a very special person

  • I think Bill (in his comment below) has summarized well the reason why this may be true: Stress is one of the most prevalent causes for physical and mental illness and pipe smoking can be an effective method of stress-relief. I think it has to do with the slow, deliberate, paced methods that are important to good smoking technique. Also the very nature of pipe smoking seems to require some patience and time set aside from the hustle and bustle of life. Thanks for another engaging video!

  • Its actually true. It has been found that pipe smokers who do not inhale are more relaxed. Stress is the number one cause of heart disease, and thus...without the heightened chance of lung cancer, reducing stress ...you tend to live longer. Weird eh?

  • did you steal that hat from Dub? pretty sweet!

  • I have struggled with depression and anxiety for many years. These conditions have been partially relieved since I took up pipe and cigar smoking a few years ago. I asked my psychiatrist and three medical doctors about this and was told by all of them that if smoking reduced my stress and anxiety I should do so. My elevated stress level would kill me long before the smoking would. So I light up; doctors' orders.

    Best,

    Bill

  • If you don't inhale and smoke lightly to moderately then you'll be okay. However your doctors are inane if they actually told you it was okay to smoke. It's never medically okay to smoke. Stress reduction involves proper diet, exercise, relaxation training, perhaps biofeedback techniques and, if needed, anti-anxiety medication. The prescription doesn't (not ever) include the use of tobacco.

    --Ken

  • prescription medication will kill you way before pipesmoking or cannabis smoking

  • You're probably right.

But a doctor advising a patient to smoke (with the exception perhaps of a terminal patient) is not practicing to community standard and is putting his license at risk.

    -Ken

  • hey buddy . like the hat

  • Good article, I really think he is on to something. Stress is extremely unhealthy, and I know Im not very stressed when I smoke a pipe, (unless the darn thing is clogged). Sorry, recent problem Ive been having. I studied epicenters and what stress does to your body in psychology and believe me, PIPESMOKING IS WAY BETTER!

  • quick question.. where do you buy your tobacco? there is a little store down the street from where I live and you can buy 50 grams for 8 bucks.. but I'd like to buy it in much bigger portions.. do you know of any good stores online?

  • NICE hat

  • How many bowls do you smoke a day?

  • 2.5 a day on average, you?
