We (Americans) don't speak one or more language because there is no need for us to. A lot of Europeans know more than one language because all those countries are so close together. I live in Michigan. What good would it be if I learned Chinese, or German? It's all about how often you would need to know a language. Most people learn another language out of necessity because as a country we are pretty isolated.

Learning languages shouldn't be about necessity, it's about opening your doors to other places, and people. Holy--that's a wonderful side on how times have changed. Nowadays they wouldn't even let an old Miss contestant to even speak a whole monologue in front of television and seem confident and actually making sense in her words. Now, we have a contestant who's not only gorgeous (what? He was a partner of the de la vega translating services but in 1997 he left the company and opened his own firm (precision translating services) taht is still connected to the MU organization. He was better before than today because in the past he waited for teh candidate to finish the answer before translating then but now, he just interep then and translate them. I don't know if the age matters because he is now old.

Indeed, it's a very smart answer..As panamanian, I admit tha Barbara's response was brilliant (obviously we've to take in consideraton that she already was a professional of publicity at the time of this constest), but this answer is not better than the answer of Mpule Kwelagobe in 1999, Lada Dutta in 2000 and Wendy Fitzwilliams in 1998.... Three of the most terrific answers I have ever heard (in order of preference)
