  • I seriously can't like this video enough....

  • so true!

  • You're so beautiful and you're so strong. I wish everybody could look at life the way you do. God bless you and I hope life leads you to happiness.

  • you are awesome! :)

  • Be strong , do not let anyone screw you up , fight back anytime that somebody try to bring you down.

  • This. This is a lot more inspirational than people just saying it gets better. What is this "it" anyway? Do people change? No. Does the worlds? Definitely not. It's always you. You really do get stronger, I've gotten stronger. Thanks for posting this video! It's inspirational!

  • well said!

  • your missing the point of the it gets better campaign and it dose get better, The high school kids this campaign is trying to reach don't think that they will meet anyone that will be ok with them being gay and that they will live a miserable and short life with no hope. it dose get better then the hell they are growing up in and yes what we go through dose make us stronger and i am proud of that, but to say it dose not get better is wrong, i have a wonderful girlfriend & friends that accept me.

  • @Fireflygamer That just means it gets better for you.

  • You are so right ! And you are BEAUTIFUL :D

  • i am crying.

  • YES, MA'AM. I feel this through & through.

  • Illegitimi non carborundum. The world has an abundance of hateful, small-minded, bigoted people - but letting them beat you down just skews the balance further in their favor. There are wonderful, caring, loving people out there - people like this woman. Hang in there. The rough times you face will teach you a lot about yourself, your resolve, and strengths you never knew you had.

  • Woot woot triple threat here...gay,scientologist,accountant, and future law student ...i dont let people knock me down I just let them pasd me by on my way to a great life and shhe iss totally riight..

  • Whats wrong with lesbians and gay men i don't see what's wrong with them. I'm straight but i respect peoples different sexuality I'm against any kind of bullying wether its against looks, sexuality, race and religon or any other kind

  • You were already amazing, but what you did in this video was transcendent.

  • Thank. You. So. Much. <3 As a 13 year old autistic lesbian/trigendered gynephillic who goes to a single-sex Catholic school in Australia and's always thought 'it gets better' is a lie...This is what I need. Sure, it won't get perfect...but I'll get stronger. And I know now that whatever shit I get, I can deal with it. Such goes the old saying. Don't let the bastards get you down.

  • You are amazing and a very good speaker.

  • All we are saying is give ECAEP a chance!

  • @GilaTomster I am a conservative Christian and I am not mean. :'(

  • I so wish that it would get better though. :'(

  • i got the chills... bravo, bravo.

  • You're awesome :)

  • Doesn't it depend on what part of the culture you live in? If you live and work in Soho (NYC) or Lakeview (Chicago), you're going to have a much easier time than if you live in Howard Beach (NYC) or Beverly (Roseland).

  • GOOD VIDEO,but gay people can go fuck themselves.

  • @yourpapi001 Well your dad didn't seem to mind.

  • Love it :) very strong and true

  • I have seen many vids in this project and this was the first one that rang true to me. I am a highly educated, well off English gay woman. That means that I rarely have to deal with the vicious attitudes of others. But it does not mean that they are not there. We are the generation that must stay strong, and stay convicted, and fight for the simple right to be just as ordinary as everyone else. It is true that you get stronger as you get older. And you have a greater appreciation for your capa

  • Your video is my favorite video in the project. I love your no bullshit approach and how articulate you are. Thank you for sharing this with the world. You are amazing!

  • You are a beautiful human being. Thank you for making this video.

  • That was fucking BEAUTIFUL.

  • Awesome!

  • Brilliant.

  • "If Jesus was alive he would chill with us because everybody else hates us" - brilliantly funny and so true. I will be quoting that.

  • AWESOME!!! thank you so much for being real and direct. I would love to meet you.

    =)

  • I have nothing to say but you're amazing and thank you!!!

  • i am sitting in my room unde my covers in the dark watching this and bawling. thank you.

  • I agree.

  • check out my queer pride poem at gabrielleriveradotcom

  • I feel a little bit stronger after watching this. I hope one day I can be as strong as you.

  • @loztprophetz123 you will be. you're already stronger than you think.

  • This is the best it get's better video of them all.

  • thank you for this. your video brought me to tears. we need more voices being real about this shit in our community. i've been really annoyed by the 'it gets better' project but this video spoke so much truth. thank you.

  • this was truy sweet and i agree with you completly <3

  • This is, quite possibly, the most truthful video on this subject that I have ever seen. As a geeky, homosexual, biromantic man, this hits close to home. I was bullied all through 4th and 5th grade due to my geeky hobbies, as well as the fallout from Columbine. It doesn't really get better, one has to become stronger to MAKE it get better. My favorite quote is similar to your message. "That which does not kill you makes you stronger."

  • Beautiful. Thanks for the truth and the love.

  • You are a beautiful soul and you brought me to tears. Thank you for your message.

  • This could not have been said any better. I have goosebumps! I am a mother of 2 young girls and I am trying to raise them to understand that deep down, no matter what our differences are, we are all the same inside. I want them to love the human race, with all it's differences. I will be sharing this with all my fb friends and am hopeful a few of them will pass it on as well. I believe straight talk like this is exactly what the 'troubled' teens of today need to hear.

  • awesome video. thanks

  • The message of “It gets better” is not that you will be rich and famous. If you have catch this message, you have misread. The campaign aims to open the eyes of young boys and girls, to show them that in the future they (very likely) will be able to have a “normal” life, without many of the problems about and due to their sexuality that get them down now. It's true, “it doesn't get better, you get stronger”, but how do you get stronger, without the hope that things will get better?

  • "it doesn't get better, you get stronger" She has a point with this, however, she left out a key component as to why you get stronger. Support. People who REALLY love you will support you no matter who you are or how you live. If you are a kid who feels completely alone because you are gay and you don't think anyone understands even in those podunk towns, there is at least 1 person who does. Believe me i came from one, and I found people who did care and helped me even in the south.

  • Amazing video!! Why can't you (or people like you) run for office??!! You'd absolutely have my vote!! Thanks again for making and posting this video!

  • Yours was, by far, the best of this campaign, the most open-eyed and realistic view.

"If Jesus was alive, he would chill with us, because everyone else hates us." True that.

  • Best response to the It Gets Better campaign. So right, it doesn't get better but you get stronger!!!! Well said! Two thumbs up!

    You rock.

  • Gabrielle Rivera, beautiful spirit of God, keep your blessings flowing.

  • luzloca821, I just wanna say I read about your video in TIME magazine this week and it motivated me to come find it on the internet. Thank you so much for making it. It's a very powerful message that I think will resonate with a lot of people.

  • Powerful, concise message!

  • Hey everyone, thanks for all of the love. Please check out my blog post about the "It Gets Better" book on sale now!

gabrielleriveraDOTcom - check out my blog post! (since they won't let me post a link, i spelled it out. hehe)

I got to meet Dan Savage and Terry Miller at the Barnes and Nobles IGB book release. Everyone involved with this project has been really awesome.

  • @luzloca821 They read your excerpt from the book last night in Chicago and I have to say that your video is awesome and you're awesome. Thanks for posting your video!

  • @luzloca821 They read your excerpt from the book last night in Chicago and I have to say that your video is awesome and you're awesome. Thanks for posting your video!

  • Awesome message.... whether you're gay, geek, meek or in some way "other than"

  • @b20di3 love this line

  • Semi-poor white bisexual chick from a poor Baptist family here. My mom told me I was going to hell and hoped I never had kids. Dad was just silent. I do have to say it got better BECAUSE I got stronger. It doesn't get perfect, but things can improve simply because we stop letting the crap of the world affect us. So... perfect? No. Better? Yes, but only because we get stronger.

  • @CaptKujata i want to give you a big hug. make a video! feel free to hit me up whenever, if u ever wanna talk or vent.

  • @luzloca821 Hey, sorry it took me so long to reply. Stuff's been nasty. Do you have a Facebook account?

  • Hi, saw you speak at Dan & Terry's reading at B&N tonight. You were awesome, very honest & heartfelt. I support this project & everyone involved in it. Thanks!

  • Yeah, Dan Savage mentioned your video in his article. I read it too :D and that's why I searched for your video and I'm here. You were so honest. Way to go!

  • @blogger18 YouTube won't let me post the link to the article. =\

  • Dude, you're in time Magazine, page 84. Or, technically, not you specifically, but Dan Savage spoke about how your video surprised him. In a good way. :)

I don't know if someone already commented this, but I finally just picked it up.

Also, thanks for being amazing via honesty. :D

  • @Snugglepops thank you so much for the heads up! i had no idea and it's such a surprise. thank you very much.

  • @luzloca821

    :)

    You're welcome!

  • it's nice to see a gay person's struggle from a different perspective. thanks, great vid, and best of luck.

  • Amazing video. Honestly, I'm speechless. Thumbs up.

  • I aint guy but Bisexual girl - but I LOVE THIs VIDEO

  • thank you! like most of these videos actually make me feel bad because im like well i'm black and my parents wont probably ever accept it and im not rich and i know some of my friends will never love me this way. but i know i'm going to learn to deal with it but sadly a lot of people wont change for me.

  • This video is so amazing. You are so right. This is the truth, this is the message that everyone needs to hear!

  • I think you saying 'it doesn't get better' is pretty stupid.

I know your message is supposed to inspire and stuff, but you've gone the wrong way about it.

what if someone didn't watch all of your video and thought 'she's right, it won't get better' it'd make everythingh a lot worse!

  • "Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)1 represent approximately 2% of the US population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV and are the only risk group in which new HIV infections have been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. In 2006, MSM accounted for more than half (53%) of all new HIV infections in the United States At the end of 2006, more than half (53%) of all people living with HIV in the United States were MSM or MSM-IDU." -- CDC

  • @STRUTTER777U Straight people get the clap more often. Point?

  • @syren345 Your source?

  • @STRUTTER777U What is your point? Do you eat sugar? Sodium? Drink soda? Drink alcohol? Smoke? Does that define who you are? How do these diseases define queer folk, define me? Straight people are perfectly susceptible to getting diseases, just as much as gay people are. You are ignorant if you think other wise. I feel very sad for you; I feel very sad that you believe these lies so much that you would come into an inspirational video like this and try to bring everyone down.

  • @glittersequins The statistics I posted are straight from the CDC. So you are calling CDC statistics "lies". LOL! Open your mind to reality or you will never overcome ignorance in your life.

  • Homosexuality is wrong.

  • You are a beautiful person...on the inside and out. Thank you for making this a lot of people need to hear this message and I wish everyone could see this.

  • WELL SAID!

  • The real, truthful, plainspoken, extremely touching version of itgetbetter... by far. If politicians / media organizations changed their way of 'speaking to the youth', things would be a bit different... perhaps they would gather some support.

  • thank you, g! awesome. this one's going on my site and to my friends. I have a friend who was saying kinda the same thing: gets better? naw. but we get stronger or get more tools or thicker skins... thanks.

  • Powerful. Thank you for sharing this.

  • THANK YOU!!! Stated perfectly.

  • LuzLoca, you're an amazing woman and you really nailed the message on the head. This message is by far the most touching, hard core, real and needed. I truly applaud you

  • MERCI!

  • tears. te quiero mami. youre strong for all of us.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you so much.

I'm white, but I'm also a poor, homeschooled, female-bodied trans person. I don't have money, or a handful of colleges waiting to accept me as soon as they see my GPA. Getting out of a hostile environment will require me to move out of state and hope I can afford to live there. My parents are never going to support my "lifestyle."

There is no magical "getting better" for people in our situation. We fight for every ounce of success and safety that we have.

  • wow. That was just...

    Beautiful.

  • This is the best.

  • I love the way u presented urself. Thanks.I just disagree on 1 point: life DOES get better, not because of money/success that comes about, but because when a person leaves school, she has choices that never existed. In school, u HAVE to b stuck for 8 hrs/day in a confining environment w/people that might b openly hostile, aggressive, or abusive. When u finish school, ur no longer burdened by that environment. U make choices of where and with whom u'll associate. That alone makes life better.

  • @vfonli That's assuming that a person is graduating. Rainbow/LGBT/Queer"youth are at risk for dropping out at higher rates than those who aren't (without any other risk factors factored in). And if they do graduate, they just may be walking into a college campus or onto the streets of a city that may not welcome them with open arms.

Choice alone doesn't make it better when SO many factors come into play outside of High School that can alter your life.

  • This is an amazing video! I love your eloquent words, and I agree that our power comes when we can love ourselves and reject the constant negative messages that try and convince us we are not valuable. And that gaining economic security and all these other things that are deeply connected with already having privilege and access to resources isnt the way its going to get better for a lot of us. Thank you so much.

  • What is best about your video is its ability to reach those who cannot really identify with the white, upper-middle class "it gets better" fairy tale. For some of us, because we're women, or we're of color, or are disabled or all of these combined, do not have it easy. What is important is knowing that we can learn to understand that we are not wrong, that it's okay to be queer. Thank you for this message. The project's strength lies in its numbers. Much love <3

  • This video was soooo beautiful and 1000 times more empowering than all the "It gets better" videos combined. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • You are gorgeous and amazing.

  • Further proof that all the people making these videos are walking persecution complexes.

  • ugh i love you.

  • Wow, quite possibly the worst thing you could have ever said to a suicidal kid.

  • @Miayako And what do you expect she tells you other than the blatant truth?

  • gracias, hermana

  • this is beautiful. thank you so much for posting this.

  • I love your video and it's so very true. Take care of your self. You are wonderful :D

  • I actually signed up for an account so I could respond to this vid.

This kicks butt. Excellent, excellent, excellent. You tell it true.

  • You rule!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • Alright, since I didn't see you do this, I got a hearing friend to make me a transcript and so I've PM'd it to you so you can insert the captions into the video OR just upload the transcript.

  • you rock so much it's ridiculous. thank you. i'll be putting this on my blog for Coming Out Day.

  • Yeah, this is my favorite it gets better video, too. Lady, you are amazing! Thanks for the straight talk from a gay gal to all us queer folks - young and not so young, religious and not so religious - it's an uplifting message.

  • You are one gutsy, blunt woman and yes, getting stronger is critical.

  • Thank you. I've been torn on how to go about how to talk to these kids, and I think you really were honest. We struggle - ever day - but I love my life. I love who I am. I love what changes I make happen in my community, and the world. That is what really matters, and I feel you've managed to convey that. Thank you, thank you so much.

  • My students pretty much universally agreed that your video was the most true and complex of all the it gets better videos we watched. So thanks!

  • @paralepsis1 whoa thank you! i'd love to talk to you more about your lesson plan and use of the video. I am honored that you chose mine to discuss!

  • Standing ovation! I am working on a blog about this, and sharing. You are an amazing, intelligent, and insightful young woman. Thank you... I was waiting for someone with this courage to speak the truth. Everyone... remember to VOTE for the ones fighting for us in the trenches, and THANK all of those that help our community and do not have to! Peace, Love, and Pride!

  • Your video is very powerful and insightful. I'm teaching it in my college class tomorrow!

  • thank you for this. i have watched it several times today. <3

  • rock on sister. sounds like it got better. self-acceptance and perspective is a huge part of maturing and you nailed it. this is one of the best videos for the project I've seen.

  • you are awesome. i hope everyone out there struggling sees this. for this ain't the only struggle to which these words of truth speak bravely.

  • I'm an over weight drag queen & I do believe it get's better. It's all on your positive attitude. You could be rich yet still hate your life, it all depends on you outlook. I agree, if you want it...go for it. You can have that "fancy" better life if you strive for it. It all depends on yourself. Yes FIGHT against the hate and the degradation.

  • @luzloca821: I must say that your speech was very truthful and empowering. The speech truly almost made me cry. You are an inspirational person and I wish you well.

  • thank you for speaking on privledge and class.. and others coming to speak on behave of out community. thank you for your voice and to me, as a youth worker and a queer poor/working class person i say FUCK the IT GETS BETTER PROJECT! we need to speak out for our own ppl. and btw, there's tons of queer youth who commit suicide or are assaulted, even killed who dont make the media, and thats because they are black or brown and not rich and white.

  • great video! thank you for making this!

  • "and you learn to realise that other people are just crazy and caught up in their own crap"

    i absolutely love that

  • Hermana,

Thank you for your message. I hope you don't mind that I shared you video on xQsí Magazine's facebook page. We want to highlight the voices of LGBT Latin@s. La lucha sigue!

  • I like your response a lot. Only thing I can say, and it's not even "against" it, because your opinion is right and valid, is that if you can grow from your experiences and become that stronger person you talked about, that IS better. It may not get better in the sense of money and recognition, but it gets better within yourself just the same. Thank you for posting your story. I'm glad people are reaching out.

  • Con respeto! much love and peace to you Sis. this is beautifal and real! Gracias for holding onto the tough love our ancestors left us in that We cant depend on "it" getting better but we sure as hell can get stronger and stay persistant with this thing called life. I am left with hope from your words.keep doing what you do!

  • i feel blessed to be gay.

  • @Damnedsoul53 Why?

  • Dude, I think I Love you.

It may get better eventually but its important to stay strong.

  • It would get even more better and greater if you can figure out how to work your webcam and get the image right, lol. This video is awesome, and I disagree wholeheartedly with what someone else wrote earlier.

  • Thanks for this<3

  • I think you message is terrible.

Most of the time it is the thought that it doesn't get better that leads to suicide. It always gets better unless you go around telling yourself that is doesn't.

  • Bravo for having the courage expressing the reality. We are the REAL people. I am applauding here for you. Most people are indeed praising the "It gets better" campaign that there intention is ok, but there is another reality, the one that you did mentioned. I live in Seattle in the middle of the gay neighborhood and here yes, "it gets better", but I feel bad for those one whom live in areas were there is not even a person near them LGBT or open minded to talk to. Way to go! You ROCK!

  • And yes....this made me very emotional!!!!

Much love to all the LGBTQ Youth out there!!!! You are loved!!!

  • Thank you for this, Sister. Strong and powerful and thoughtful words. And a far clearer worldview for us queers. Peace.

  • THIS IS THE BEST, MOST REAL "It gets better" video ive seen yet! Luzloca you are AMAZING and thank you so much for spreading your message.

  • You rock, sister!

  • Of all the videos, this one really struck me. Thank you for contributing to the campaign and for being so real. Your words are SO needed, great job.

  • Thank you so much for putting this out there. Thumbs up!!

  • (cont...) That the country cares at all about gay kids committing suicide is SO RADICALLY DIFFERENT than when I was in high school. We do this work because we have faith that things are getting & will continue to be better & we get stronger because we know we are not alone in the struggle. keep the faith.

  • (cont...) Yes, there is still much hatred, and churches, and laws, and families, and school districts, etc. working against us, but you don't need to be famous or rich or white to notice that things are better.

  • (cont...) Gay organizations no longer have to form in secrecy, as they did just one generation before me, and it is much easier to find community, religious acceptance, and even love as a GLBT person these days if you look for it. All of that IS BETTER!

  • well,... this isn't totally true. I also am a lesbian woman of color and, you DO get stronger, but it actually DOES get better, too. In my short life, I have seen GLBT issues find their way into prime time television, political platforms, and public discourse.

  • Thank you soooo much for speaking up. You spoke what I was feeling. Again thanks.

  • Thank you for this gift. Thank you so much.

  • Word. This is the truth. Thank you for making this video.

  • you took the words right out of my mouth! Thank you!
