  • Even today ahead of his time.

  • Why talk about Metallica or metal on a Zappa compostion. Metallica or anybody else can't

    compete with Zappa's genius.

  • it must have been so gratifying for zappa to finally have his music played by an ensemble able to do it. can you imagine working your entire life to reach something. im sure this ment alto to him

  • ....Genial.................!!!!!

  • Pure genius.

  • fuzzy dice,bongos in the back !

  • I don't think you can really compare Beethoven's Symphonies to Zappa's neo-classical works because they are two totally different musical era's. BUT in retrospect of innovated, eccentric, outgoing, strongly opinionated and ballsy pieces of work. They are all master pieces and both can be compared as great composers and geniuses.

  • this oboe lady makes such a fun sound!

  • @Pliquer Hyperbole.

I make no attempts as objectivity, as I already said.

  • @Hyardacil I happen to agree with you. In my opinion, Zappa, along with Ellington are two of the greatest composers of the 20th century. (btw, I like Beethoven but I think this is much better then his 9th.)

  • @Pliquer Oh agreed definitely. I wasn't implying that all those you mentioned be sub-par to the standard set to these two names, rather I took one of the name of these greats that associate with each other simply in their... greatness in music, I guess, and elevated this piece or Zappa in general to that level.

That was the idea of that sentence.

And it is of course not objective, nor striving to be so, as most youtube comments aren't.

  • Love Frank Zappa Now!

  • I'd love to see somebody offer their own orchestral take on Captain Beefheart.

  • Just amazing..... This is the first time I have seen this; THANKS TO GAIL ZAPPA NOT taking this down....pfft...so fucking stupid...

  • heavenly music.

  • Music lovers and cultured people in general should listen in their lifetime at least once:

    1) Beethovens 9th

    2) This.

  • @Hyardacil and Mahler 7th

  • @Hyardacil

I agree, and would like to add to your list:

    Shostakovich's 7th ;-)

[AR]

  • Dog Breath is one of my absolute fave FZ compositions.

  • how could you not like this?

  • I don't know Zappa's favourite classical composers, but I guess Stravinsky was among them...

  • @zonaras83 you would be correct in your assumption

  • @zonaras83 You are absolutely rigth!! Besides Stravinsky, Edgard Varèse and Anton Webern had a great influence on him!

  • Arg, stupid people clapping during the performance.

  • Brilliant. Sublime. Perfect.

  • WOAH didn't even know there was video of this. Thank you!!!!!

    over the decades.

  • fa-bu-leux ! merci !!!!!!!

  • beautiful.

  • finally someone put it on!

  • love it!

  • this is so good!!!

  • it takes quite a skilled and diverse orchestra to play zappa.

  • @iansquared3

I don't see how this in any way would require more skill than any other well-known classical piece.

  • @OpethToolMetallica Well, this piece isn't well known, rendering it unusual and difficult for your average orchestra member. It is easier to play what you have played many times.

  • @panamaredone

That's a rather unconvincing response, the instrumentation is quite similar to other 20nd century classical music. Even if it were different, that itself still wouldn't mean it would be difficult to play.

  • @OpethToolMetallica So you are saying that if a group has played the same Metallica song over 100 times and you present that same group of musicians a song by the Mars Volta that they are not familiar with, they will be able to pull it off the same way they did with the Metallica song that they probably know by heart? And with the same ease? That is all I was saying... Wasting time on a Metallica fan, stupid me.

  • @panamaredone

It's you that's the idiot indeed, and you're trying to hide it by saying I'm stupid because of my name - and only imbeciles resort to fallacies like that. An idiot because you failed to make any logical or relevant point. What you're saying (almost) never applies to the real world. No good musician not to mention a musician in an orchestra would excel in (classical) music of type A and be unfamiliar to type B. Think before you post, or don't if you can't.

  • ...especially that part!

  • Thanks for posting this! I always wanted to see that concert!

  • @qualifulproducts check on line...found a DVD of one of the concerts which i believe there were three nights..it's the full playlist...a very good quality bootleg taken from German television..great sound and great picture...a must have documenting Frank's last public stage appearances...

  • @EndlessNot1 OK, thanks!

  • This is purely genius

  • Nothing short of Excellent! Frank Zappa was always searching for the elements of various sound. This piece is another example of Zappa's on-going contribution to NEW music and diversity. Thanks for giving us your brilliance, Frank!
