  • why do you need that tool for the cam sprocket not to spin ?

  • ever do it without the tool its a magic trick

  • Did them myself, cost of parts and that special tool was like 300 all bought off ebay.

  • Hey just wondering how much these repairs cost you.

  • no more V engine for me, especially that there are inline six available too, eg. Bmw

  • were did you get the special cam tool? I am about to do a motor swap out of my A4 v6 and before i install the new motor i was going to do the timing belt and water pump....maybe ill do a short you tube video also... great job by the way

  • yes i just posted me doin a clutch job

  • GREAT JOB.. could you link more of these "tutorials" no matter how shitty.. i have found no definitive help on this issue.. thanks

  • Lol thanks! I was just happy things went smooth without a problem.

  • i like the ending.

"alright I'll kee.... uhh alright cya."

    haha.

    nice work man.

  • For all you owners out there, fyi...

get your water pump, timing belt, and belt tensioners replaced no less than every 80,000 miles.

If your belt does break, it is usually because one of the the idlers or water pump seizes up; burning off the belt.

If your timing belt goes, many valves WILL be bent.

Having your heads reworked is extremely expensive and usually not worth it.

  • @deacon974

Your changing the front seal? You mean on the Front Main Seal?? if the engine turned and your changing the front main seal with the timing belt off then as long as your cams(tow up top) dont turn you can rotate the crank shaft back to TDI(top dead center) line up the marks again.

    Good Luck Buddy

  • Hy I'm trying to change to front seal on my 1998 a6 but am having trouble getting pulley off, and also the engine turned am I in trouble. And where is the bolt that holds the pulley on

  • I would recommend you do it some time before 100000 miles. I believe it is an interference motor. I drove mine till it started to no sound right. Youll notice youll start hearing a ringin noise from your motor. But thats because the water pump gave out. I recommend you change the water pump, thermostat, tensioner pulley and timing belt and serphentine belt while you have it open. Basically a timing belt kit with thermostat and serpentine belt.

    Good Luck,

    James

  • @quintajl Thank you. :)

  • Hey I just bought a used 2003 Audi A6 2.7l T it has about 80,000 miles on it and I'm pretty sure its an interference motor. I was wondering if you would recommend I get the timing belt and water pump changed before winter or do you think it could last until next summer. I'm not going to be doing anything crazy with it driving wise, its pretty much just going to be used on the hwy to get back and forth from school. And it is currently in excellent condition. Thank you -Alex

  • @chingon1988- their should only be one size, just look up the year and size of the motor.

  • How do you find out what size timing belt you need? I want to buy a kit to change my timing belt but it has 3 options for belt sizes..did you have to look at your old belt to find out what size it is?

  • Yes Sir, The engine is an interference engine. So if the timing belt snaps then your most likely messed up pistons, valves etc. That is because it is a high compression motor and the valve will come into contact with the top of the pistons.

  • Not sure millenia007, its could be because of the technology. Things like mpg and hp/tq ratings as well as emissions?

  • @quintajl i have a question if the timing belt breaks on a 2000 a6 will it damage the valves? or not cuz i am thinking of buying a 2000 a6 but if its not a non inteference motor i wont buy it.thanks

  • @quintajl i know a guy tha his a6 timing belt broke and hes mechanic told him the valves a bent and when it happen he said he herd a weird noise and the car just shut off.

  • why Audis are so complicate to work on??

  • Fearthisrc:

That's awesome! Ive heard and tried to do the timing job without the special cam locking bar. Everything looked good when I attempted the trick, until the cams turned on its own and spun. At the time I was unemployed and low on funds, I didn't now wanna take the risk especially after it spun. I really am in question on not having to take off the front end as it is almost impossible to get to the lower pulleys. Please provide reference (proof) of your claim as it will help others.

  • I swear to all of you that you dont need that special tool or have to full off the front end. I lined mine up by eye and a metal broom stick, I wasn't a tooth off. All without pulling the front end off. My S4 ran for another 46K and right before i sold it. Now have a A6 2.7t 6 speed. Love the 2.7T!!

  • @Fearthisrc by the way Fearthisrc I believe your talking about the serpentine belt I ended up changing the old one a few months later(because I was broke) very very tight fight. To ANYONE who changes there serpentine belt its quicker easier and smarter to just loosen the top half of the front end to give you some room to work with and insure good QA. Do it right the first time and you wont have to do it again my friends.

  • i just did axles on my 2000 a6, the car was sitting for almost a year because i thought it needed a timing belt, but i pulled off the cover and it was in good shape. however i think i have a bad PS pump (noisey). Anyway i wish these ass hats would stop using timing belts and just use chains like BMW. This will be the last Audi i ever purchase until they use chains. I hate frivolous maintenance.

  • Where is your crankshaft mark? my 95 had a arrow on the plastic cover like yours and a notch in the harmonic pulley. But its not tdc? is it right when the cams are lined up and arrow lined up on mine,do you know? I havent seen an refferebce to a 95 with a arrow and mark on pulley

  • And to tell you the truth I didn't even release the cam gears and it still came out right.

  • I purchased all the parts (metal WP impeller and Cam locking tool) on eBay motors. The whole process took me around 5 hours, but since I did it once it shouldn't take more than 3hrs.

  • Thanks for the video Where can I get the speciall tool n do u know where can I find a metall impeller water pump

  • how much did you pay for the tool and how long did it take you to do the whole process? thank X

  • aren't you kinda missing the whole point of the cam gig is to hold the cams while taking loose the cam drive gears so they float? notice your tool has access to the bolts. and yes take the tensioner piston assembly out and compress it in a bench vice. also replace tensioner pulley, idler pulley, water pump and thermostat while in there.

  • dont depress the tensioner on the vehicle take out the tensioner first.. then do it on ur bench clamp...

  • very very good job.. i did one v6 before.. very weird design... floating cam gears... lol..

  • Im not sure, I didnt have an issue when I did it. let me know what you came up with.

  • THank you so much for this! Not too much out there for Audi's! I am doing timing on my A8 now, but have an '02 Allroad 2.7T to do soon. I think your video will help tons!

Do you have any documentation that is helpful to removing the front ends by chance? THANKS!

  • Um all I can say is there are two are links I can send you as well as give you a more detail instructions if youde like. It wasnt that hard once I figured every thing out.

  • I can honestly say that i had no idea what this was about....but, I think it's a nice skill to have huh? well good job Mr. Q!
