the genesis had better composers and didn't work with samples that much while it defnitly could have done.i prefer the pure synth sound of the genny at times.
"The early stuff does sound rather poor (technically), but developers eventually learned to make the most of the hardware." Funny. My opinion is that it's the other way 'round. Most of the best and memorable music is from the earlier years of the Genesis. Games like PSII, TF3, SOR1, Gaiares, Shinobi, Valis 3, etc.
Well those are actually some of my faves as well (see my tributes to them) but strictly technically speaking, not composition or melodies, they are underdeveloped - no psg (extra square note channels), no/low quality dac (sampled drums), no interesting effects on the instruments or just poor instrumentation overall. Among the games you mentioned, only PsII and Gaiares really suffer from it though. And SOR1/Revenge of Shinobi sounded amazing for the time but Yuzo Koshiro was a genius :)
Well the Genesis won the gameplay, and fun department.

Listen to Ryu saying "HADOKEN"
SNES won in the sound department, but the Genesis is still an awesome system.
