  • I miss that place. Very few memorys of it but the ones of them are great.

  • @GmTruckCarLove relax its just SBNO it's repairing the rides. scheduled to open on the summer of 2012

  • looks like it was going to falll apart

  • That was one rickety-ass rollercoaster....I loved joyland

  • Not trying to be mean or anyhting.. but how in the hell do you live in Wichita for most of your life and not at least hear about Joyland? That is definitely a first for me. Not trying to be mean, but I just find that rare and interesting,... if born before 1998.

  • This is great! That roller coaster was even rated by a group of coaster "junkies" as one of the top 10 wooden frame roller coasters in the country. Very sturdy, but looks it's age, hence part of the scare. I noticed the sign at the top of the first hill is missing, the one that said "stay seated". Brings back a lot of good memories. Joyland Restoration Project is attempting to reopen the park. By the way, the park is way off on the west side of the street on South Hillside, south of Pawnee.

  • where is joy land??? i live in wicthita most of my life and have never heard of joyland!!

  • @TheIMABLONDE It's closed down.

  • @SuperSnow16 ohhhhhhhhhhhh ok

  • @TheIMABLONDE Yea,someone died there :(

  • @SuperSnow16 o.o

  • @TheIMABLONDE It was on S. Hillside, but I live in Oklahoma now, and can only see it on Google Earth, and all I see is rubble were we had so much fun grouwing up.

  • good old days

  • i loved that ride to bad they shut it down :(

  • @loveunderlaw And also, I'm Catholic and not all priests are like that. So know your facts before you start assuming stuff.

  • @loveunderlaw How would that impress me? That's kinda a stupid thing to lie about. And it's not about being in danger. Unless your a satantic worshiper, i think anyone in their right mind would be freaked out to walk in on something like that.

  • My boyfriend and his friend have snuck into Joyland multiple times. He told me that one night they decided to go in the Wacky Shack, and they walked in on a satanic worship. After I heard that, I'm kinda scared to go to Joyland at night.

  • @leiamccuiston1 Sounds like bullshit to me, he probably just wanted to try to impress you LOL He'd be in more danger if he were an Altar Boy at the church:)

  • I grew up riding that rollercoaster every summer!! Brings back memories! Too bad joyland is closed now :(

  • Okay PLEASE don't try to "fix up" this park, PLEASEE!! It is not up to code anymore! Don't be a sentimental fool, okay? Those rides look good in the video, but this was a long time ago, the rides have all deteriorated, and now, fixing it up would just a a money pit, if you could tear it down and start over, why don't you? Just take it down, and build up new rides! Make it a nice attraction! But for goodness sakes DON'T try to fix it up!!! Call it, the NEW! Joyland! Just start from scratch! (:

  • @100000000blueskies Blackpool Pleasure beach has 4 coasters from 1920` to 1930`s all operating at full profit along sits it newest rides for 2011!! and they are upto code as we say in England meet all Health and saftey regulations, and Blackpool removes it 1970`s rides for newer ones but never lost it oldest ones

  • This sure brings back a lot of memories

  • i used to live there and next month am going back to were i really live WICHITA KS HELL YEAH

  • It's supposed to reopen in 2013 rebuilt and everything

  • @SpenceAndAria729 I can vouch. I lived within 1 mile of it for 15 yrs. It was a shame to see what happened to it, a wichita land mark. I stopped by the old neighborhood and I can see their starting work on it. The marque has been dull colored but to me it looks like someone repainted it. I'll take work off that day when it reopens for damn sure.

  • @y2joct7 Right? Haha.

  • Wow, 1990 I was 4 years old. It's awesome to see a full ride through the roller coaster though.

  • if i was rich enough i'd open joyland and rebuild the coaster with a metal track and build one with a loop

  • brings back memory's

  • Well successfulpossible i am serious about it but its gonna be a while before i do. I got a full spectrum camera but i need more uv-ir lights and some stationary cameras, possibly a dvr as well but ill keep posted when i get more stuff!!!

  • little bit of kid still left in you to get where im coming from...I mean shit im getting old(getting up there) but man im not old enough to stop sneaking into this place late at night......Im not even sick of going there after day after day after day...I dont know guys.......youll just have to get my point of view.....And i wish i could have worked there sounds like it was the shit though.........FUCK MAN someone hit me up if you guys want to go there.......just for fun....ANYONE?

  • And the other day on the news i herd someone started a fire up in old joylands bathroom...and Im pretty sure its the bathrooms im thinking of....but when i herd that It pissed me off....cause i mean thats the kick it spot.......And i didnt want anyone to figure out that people still go there(talking about like the news and police knowing that people sneak into there) I mean its hella fun to sneak into late at night.....man this place is the shit STILL even though its gone. But you got to have a

  • I just wrote a "Descriptive-Narrative Essay" for my college english class over the first time i rode a roller coaster at Joyland! i used this video to re-enhance my memory of the actual course of the coaster! very helpful.

  • And it is one of my dreams to do a paranormal investigation there. Even if i dont catch anything. It be nice to see the old park just 1 more time!!

  • @combseric If your serious about it....I am down(if you dont mind me being there with you while you investigate....I mean ill help out too though) but yeah man If your really into that paranormal stuff.....like how i am......man I got creepy shit(news basically) thats went down there.....I seen and herd stuff....not just me though all my friends that were there with me have to....I swear there is something thats lerking around that place....but yeah if serious about it hit me back up about it.?

  • @SuccessfulPossible when u wanna do it man? Im down for the paranormal stuff. Hell Ive been exposed to it my whole life and where better to investigate then a wichita land mark.

  • I MISS joyland. I met my best friend there when i was 4. And this was my first roller coaster! But the one thing i miss the most is the WACKY SHACK! That was my favorite!

  • Ah I miss this coaster, was the very first one I rode :)

  • I worked at Joyland during the early 80's. After the park closed we all went to the Kart track and raced for free. Simply the best of times. Sorry to see the old place is going down hill.

  • If anyone is ever down for paintball in that place hit me up....that shit would be hella fun....or like a holloween party up in the broke down wacky shack.....or just make a haunted house there during holloween....even knowing they would probley catch on from all the kids jumping over the fence to a abonded amusement park.

  • I sneak in this place for shits and giggles....and it looks like hella shit now compared to how it looks like in this video....but no duh its a 11 years ago....but yeah everytime i go there somethings new about that place like i think someone lives there are something and then watches people that walks around and doesnt come out tell they no its just them by there self....But yeah thats what i thought actually like 4 days ago Is make that place into a paintball field

  • this was my first rollercoaster when i was younger and i remember saying that the first turn to go up the lift was one of the scariest parts cause of the creaking haha but lots of great memories at joyland

  • remember running around picking up trash so you could feed the pig?

  • i am from wichita

  • I snuck n there middle of the night and clmbed that coaster it was fucking scary but what was really cool was wehen i climbed the sky cosater frame to the top

  • every time i drive by i look to see the sign at the top of the rollercoaste (wich is viewable from the highway) but hen i remember the sign was stolen!

  • So many people have died from this roller coaster... Miss Joy Land though....

  • That was my favorite roller coaster in the whole world. Boy do I miss Joyland. I wish someone would buy it and re-open it. I hate seeing it closed down.

  • @up80932 they should turn the whole park into a paintball or airsoft field

  • this was my first roller coaster. it scared the living crap out of me. i genuinely thought it was going to crumble beneathe me :/

  • that roller coaster sucks but.wichita .is a amazing ¡¡ place .love you wichita ¡¡

  • @BsAs8Ros8Coa you must be in the crack business....wichita is nice but I wouldn't go as far as "amazing".....

  • @rugme for me is a cool place ..whay everybody says wichita sux ??is nice that city but is my opinion

  • i miss joyland.....so much! that was the BEST roller coaster ever...

  • I remember when i would go there when i was little

  • Excellent example of a traditional out & back coaster. Its a shame the place has been abandoned for so long now. Unfortunately, I think this coaster is well beyond repair at this point.

  • i remember going there when i was little

  • this park is just in the wrong place to be in

  • WOW! Lots and Lots of old memories! How I wish someone would restore this Landmark! Not just for fun....but for our History in My Hometown, Wichita.

  • Wow this video really reminds me of being a kid in the summer again, thank you.

  • the roller coster at joyland is scary

  • Brr! Been on that thing about 40 years ago---Never again!

  • it was like all the guys had bear guts with no shert and all the girls looked a little to big to have ther shirts of nothing against biger size ppl cuz im skinny and i dont evan take my shirt of in public not much of a family place anymore

  • ive wint ther twice once when i was a kid never road the Rollercoaster though just cuz one i heard the finale destination like story wher the guy got beheaded and because the the Rollercoaster look like it was falling apart and man that clown gave me nightmares it reminded me to much of final destination movie then the second time it was evan worse it stunk like stengy sex swet and everybody was eather not wearing a shirt and all the chicks wher in bikinys that deffenitly did not fit at all lol

  • I loved Joyland.

But that creepy clown playing the piano freaked me out!

And the roller coaster was so OLD!

That was my very first roller coaster, and I was shaking in fear after I got off!

That place kinda freaked me out, but I loved it!

  • This rollercoaster is scary shit...not because its too thrilling or crazy, but because I'm surprised the thing didn't collapse 20 years ago....the landscaper got his head cut of weedeating under there while the ride was going....freaky shit.

  • Haha..brings back memories! And ya, that clown was a scary as hell!

  • Yeeeee Haaaaw !!! ....... rode this coaster MANY times in the early 60's ...... GREAT JOB capturing this on video !! ..... I can tell you, I grinned from ear to ear watching this........ AWESOME !!

  • fucked off many Easter sundays here!!

  • man that was my first roller coaster and it scared the crap outta me. it's not really that high up at all, but it feels like it could crumble to dust at any moment.

  • The only thing missing is the sign at the

top with the cartoon guy looking down. I wish I knew who has it. That mother goose area gave me nightmares for years. I remember those blue plastic coins in potato chip bags, good times.

  • Didn't someone get decapitated from that sign?

  • wasn't the sign....the landscaper got his head cut off while he was weedeating the grass under the ride and was in the wrong place at the wrong time

  • it been a long time. good old wack ass joyland.

  • i hated working at joyland it smell like ass every damn day in the summer

  • Ya'll remember that clown that played the piano? That was scarier than that piece of shit ride. I hated the train too, smelled like sewage the whole time.

  • haha

  • All completely true. haha oh my gosh.

  • dude i thank you for this video it brings back so many childhood memories

  • I think the scariest thing about this roller coaster growing up was whether or not it was going to fall apart while you were riding it!!!

  • I chipped my front tooth on the orange handle of this ride about the same year this video was made!

  • My family would go the Joyland from Ponca City, Okla. It was a fun family day out. We loved this roller coaster ride. Now after seeing this it doesn't seem so scary. LOL

  • Man I miss this ride. I used to go all the time in middle school. Once i rode it 14 times in one day and riding it at night with the string lights on the lift hill was awesome! Me and my sister took our brother on it when he was five and he loved it too. Man i miss Joyland, the city needs to get their crap together and reopen it instead of letting the hobos and druggies trash it to hell.

  • that roller coaster ROCKED!!!! but I always thought it was gonna break while I was on there

  • That brings back memories. I lived right across from Joyland.

  • I was never a Joyland fan. I only went twice, and never really understood why people kept going back to such a small park that never really changed. However, I do think this was a great example of an out & back coaster and should be preserved. Between the roller coaster and log jammer, Joyland actually could have built up a good park if they had the space and funds. Somebody should buy the park and see about restoring at least this one ride.

  • does anyone remeber when that lizzie chick fell out of the ferris wheel at joyland and nearly died, yeah, that was my sister's best friend, we were at the park and watched her fall, i never want joyland to open again

  • The first time I made out with a girl was at joyland lol. Last time I went the place smelled like shit and looked like shit too. Can't say I really miss it.

  • I've ridden this coaster at least 50 times.

Joyland is closed now, but the coaster still stands. It is in such terrible shape, the owners couldn't find anyone that would insure it and it was closed in 2006, even with the rest of the park open. The park, for that matter is in an equal state of disrepair and decay.

There is no profit in keeping Joyland open and that's why this coaster will continue to rot.

  • This roller coaster was my life. I live directly behind joyland. I used to be able to go to my back yard, look up and see the sign at the top of the coaster. Before some vandles ran off with it. Come on people we need to get this up and running.

  • Wichita has a lot of wealthy people, it is home to one of the richest men in the world (Charles Koch), why doesn't anyone restore and reopen this park, we have the money to do it. This park was successful for almost 50 years, it can be successful again. We have government owned hotels, zoos, and shopping centers, why not a small theme park. The crime and vandalism at at abandoned park has got be be costing the city a lot of money and stress.

  • @lilshortjordan i miss this place ;(

  • @lilshortjordan so true. I loved Joyland.

  • @lilshortjordan My mom works for Mr.Koch..:) I met him one day. :)) And AMEN!

  • @lilshortjordan It's the same situation across the country, do you really think the elite of the nation give a flying fuck about the rest of us? I'll clue you in, THEY DON'T! It's high time we took control of America, & Europe back from them. If we don't stand our ground now, their will be nothing left for future generations.

  • As a former Joyland employee: Roller coaster enthusiasts used to come from all over the world to ride The Joy Land Roller Coaster. It was one of the top 100 wooden roller coaters world wide until they shut Joyland down. It was a great ride and a good park. FYI the man that died was an employee of the park. He was working around the coaster when the accident occured.

  • Correct. He was doing lawn maintenance work under the tracks wearing headphones and stuck his heade up as the train went by. He was decapitated.

No rider has ever died on this coaster.

  • i own joyland and all way have owend i never sold it

  • hahahah i joyland that ride sukd ha but yea it suks they shut it down to bad u can always drive down to kc

  • Have some respect for our cities history man.

  • I had my first roller coaster ride here. Oh the memories. When did it close down? Anybody know if the skating rink is still there?

  • when u ride the back kart, you come off the tracks a little

  • holy shit really?

  • ya some chick actualy died because she like stood or lifted herself up or something and got thrown out, but ya thats y i never ride the back!

  • holy fucken shit!!!!!!

  • No, it was an employee working under the ride that got hit

  • this is the best i loved this place that'd be so awesome if they would re open it and the scariest part of this thing was because its so old you think your going 2 die lol

  • Is this place till in bussiness?

  • no no no it went out a while back

  • bring's back memories thanx

  • Did joyland go down a few years ago?

  • I used to go to Joyland when I was little. And whoever is saying that the park sucked You are so wrong!

  • I love it, thanks for putting this up. Remember when the zipper was at Joyland sometime back in the 70's? I wish Joyland was still open so I could take my children.

  • i used to sit in the very back. the last seat moves and shakes off track it feels like.haha

  • 0:18 - I hated that climb. O.O

  • WOW... seeing this and looking at different sites with pictures brings back floods of memories! Me and a few guys in Wichita are thinking about asking for donations to buy it and fix it up a bit. (may not ever open, but we would like to preserve it)

  • Joyland brings back memoiries

  • My favorite rollercoaster in the world. The fear comes not from being turned upside-down and shaken until you want to vomit, but from the rickety ride on this 60-year-old wood timber beast. I miss it terribly.

  • 1) Joyland sucked, but it was all we had, so we were proud of our white trash amusement park.

    2) The roller coaster sucked. It was just an up, down, up down, up down. The only thing that scared me about it was the it was so old. I thought it would break. :P The Log Jam was waaay better then the roller coaster.

    ...Wichita kind of sucks.

But I pretty much have to put up with it.

Hahaha. No. I love it here. Everyone's insane. :P

  • all I gotta say is...I need some wacky shack NOW!

  • RIP joyland

  • i love the dub-k but joyland need to fix dat ragedy muthafucka lol

  • Joyland...Wild West World...Casinos.... Nothing can ever survive or begin here... This place is run by people living in the distant past. This city will NEVER be modern.

  • man that thing was held up by staples....i only went on it once.

  • hahahahaha joyland sucks.. been there it was boring

  • that rickety shit.

  • This brings back lots of memories~!~

  • I really wish instead of trying to sell the park that it could have been somehow placed on the Kansas Historical sites list and saved by state funding

  • The clickity-clack of that chain on the first drop...talk about suspense!

    Nice job holding the camera.

  • Awsome memories

  • fun as hell!

  • makes me sad

  • love that place

  • Thanks for the memories! A huge part of my childhood!

  • R.I.P. Joyland and that roller coaster...

Putting that video on full screen really brings me back. We need a video of the gokarts. LOL

  • i went to joyland many times and decided to went on that roller coaster

BUT I HAVE TO tell you that its fun and scary :)

  • That roller coaster is freaking scary as hell I've been to worlds of fun, six flags and some other places but this one has a sense of death that makes it soo fun to ride!! I miss the good ol days lol.

  • Remember when someone started the rumor that a joyland service man was mowing the lawn under the coaster, and the roller coaster went too low and chopped his head off? That was funny.

  • That was real. lol.

  • Thanks for sharing memories of one of the world's last wooden roller coaster rides. How DID you hang on to the camera?

I can almost smell the cotton candy and garbage, and hear the mechanical (scary) organ-playing clown.

  • Miss it!!!

  • joylands going bye, bye. too bad, good memories.

  • i love that rollocoaster im pretty sure they closed the paark down though

  • Thanx for posting. I hate to say it but this coaster has probably made it's last run.

  • I never felt very secure on that coaster, The seatbelts are worn and the first drop feels like your not in your seat. Other than that, it's a kiddy ride. That park fell under bad management they only had 3 rides worth riding, coaster, log ride, and the tilt-a-whirl

  • COME ON!!! How about Wacky Shack? LOL!!!

  • that place needed to be overhauled bad it was becoming a dump and the log ride dam green smelly water that coaster was in bad shape

  • i miss joyland!

i went on that roller coaster for the first time when i was like 7.

its still sitting there but i wish it opened up! :P

  • That was my first rollercoaster. But after riding many others, that one seems like a baby ride. Its funny seeing the guy after the ride saying, "That was something!" If only he could see what was the future.

  • i cant belive it is still there it was a fun ride and one of the oldest wooden rollar coasters in the United states!OMG!!! I thing if joyland was still open and people kept riding it I think i will break and kill people they really do need to tear it down since the park has been closed for over 3 years

  • Yeah thats too bad they shut that place down. I hope they bring it back.

  • yea dude me too. i used to work there.. The coaster was my ride.. Did it for like 3 or 4 seasons.. Sucks its goin down...

  • i second that!!

  • NO WAY! That was as scary as heck! I was SOOOOOOO happy when they closed it down!

  • Brings back lots of great memories.

  • what ever happened to the old clown robot that played the organ

  • That clown used to scare the hell out of me! I can still remember its hands going back and forth! haha BTW the first and last(thank God) time I ever rode on that roller coaster I nearly died. They didn't even check to see if our seat belt was on and by the time we got it clipped, the front of the coaster was already rounding the first corner!

  • I hate that rollercoaster. It's a wooden deathtrap affectionately called a ride.

  • first rollercoaster i ever went on! too bad it is gone!!

  • That rollercoaster was death waiting to happen. Glad it's gone, but whatever happened to the Bison on the grounds of Joyland.

  • Its not gone yet. It's still sitting there.

  • Its not gone yet. It's still sitting there.

  • Jesus I seriously think that is one of the oldest rollercoasters in the nation now...too bad they shut joyland down AGAIN cuz last sumer it was pretty cool. Free admission, free rides, and a full bar till 2am!!!

  • yah, but all the neighbors had to wine like bitches and get it closed again

  • i hated that thing when i was little

  • OMGGG i soooooo remember that damned roller coaster! My legs shook like jelly when i would get off of it! I think we almost hit a bird on the very first corner the last time i was on it and that was YEARS ago...i also remember the scrambler?? It was AWESOMEEEE pick one person you want to squish the crap out of and put them on the "correct" corner...you could do some serious damage!! Wacky Shack was sooooo cool as a kid though.

  • Thank god they shut that stupid thing down.and re-did it.

that was getting old and scarry

  • If you look to the right you will see backyards in which I used to live around and that place was the bomb..It was right across my middle school jardine..

  • That last little drop is a sleeper lol!

  • RIP

  • I remember that thing scaring the crap out of me everytime I rode it...

  • think god that death trap finally got closed it was a drug infested gang hangout

  • Everyone rode that bad boy at least once...If you went to public school in or around Wichita it was a rite of passage.
