Doy wrote this song after his first wife died. Hovie usually told a little about each song before they sang in Long Beach,Ca. I love Doy's voice & enjoyed him singing Plus he could play the piano really well. They were my favorite group in the 60s - yes I am old!
What a beautiful song! It's impossible for me to listen to the lyrics and not be moved. Doy Ott does an outstanding job here, and like so many of you, I wish we could have heard more solos from him. Thank you so much for posting this!
Doy Ott is under appreciated in the Southern Gospel music industry. It is not too late to give Doy Ott the recognition he deserves. How about it Bill Gaither?
Doy Ott wasn't the most prominent member of the Statesmen Quartet, but if he hadn't been there they wouldn't have sounded so good. Jake Hess once said that Doy had one of the widest voice ranges he ever heard.God bless you Doy Ott. We miss you and Hovie, Jake,Denver,Rosie and all of the Statesmen who have go on to Glory.
hello all.i lost both my parents, but i thank the lord they are both waiting for me that day when ever the lord will call me to stand beside them, from william,n.ireland
I think all baritone singers are under-appreciated, but Doy Ott more than most. He had a wonderful voice and of course could also take over piano duties when Hovie wanted to move around. Doy takes center stage on a song called "God Will Bless You All" that I just love.
Can you tell me where he is buried? I'm trying to make a list of where gospel singers are buried, but I can't find any information for Mr. Ott.
mariedonceee is absolutely right, there will never be another gospel group like the Statesmen.
I was lucky enough to see them a few times in concerts and all night singings in North Alabama. There's nothing like listening to those wonderful singers on a dewy blanket late on a summer night at an all night sing outdoors.
My mother and Doy Ott traded places playing the piano at the Mississippi State Fair in Pontotoc in 1934 playing for the Hartford Quartet. He had long hair as an Indian would and mother remembers how good he was. We remained friends with him until his death in 1986.
The Statesmen were the greatest gospel group of all time, there will never be any to compare with them. I got to hear them in person in Pueblo, Colorado back in the 70's and there was the most wonderful presence of God in the auditorium, awesome and powerful as soon as they started singing.
One of the smoothest voices in all of Southern Gospel Music history! Doy Ott and Jack Laws had voices like butter!

I'm old, too, and they were definitely my favorites in the 60's. Saw them often in Chicago and in Nashville!
