@asuniko robert palmer is a whiney lil bitch who got pissed off cause Robert Smith row-shambo-ed him just like he did cartman in that episode of south park, The Cure rules, fuck robert bitch ass palmer!!
I can't do it. I simply can't do it. I've tried listening to so much Cure stuff to get into it, but all I can see or hear is just random friggin jibberish. I guess it's not my day.
@lcsmwiley "Faith" and "Pornography" are their best records imho. The Cure, along with Christian Death and a few others, invented Goth/death rock. That's the true essence of the Cure. Depression, existantialism. It may be your thing, or not. Some hate his voice, but generally, The Cure is a religion to those who love 'em.
Yes Robert Palmer is dead but the cure fans sound dead from the neck up. From the look of things those roadies were about to find a cure for their ignorance.
For those of you who discredit Robert Palmer as a legitimate, accomplished, multi-talented artist, I challenge you to check out his extensive discography...
@offthelinegt You can find the answer to that question for yourself. By the way, "whiney" isn't a word. I think the word you're trying to spell is WHINY....
@TheRutledgest Thanks for the tip, looks like the grammar police are out in full force today, I'll be more carefull next time. Are you going to write me a ticket while you're at it? Sorry to put down your beloved Mr. Palmer .. lol cheers bud
@offthelinegt@TheRutledgest Thanks for rising to the level of civility. There's nothing to be gained by trashing Robert Palmer. He obviously was talented or we wouldn't be talking about him. I don't care for The Cure but I wouldn't defame them, as I know people like you are fans, just as I'm a fan of RP. As for grammar, it's always best to get it right because, while those reading your comments might not agree with you, at least they'll know you're literate.
@HaloCure I was just being "difficult" as my mother would say. Playful. Sarcastic. I love old cure before the big hair days of the mid-late 80s. The older stuff was just great. Pure. anyways thanks for the response.
Bullshit, Bloodflowers was one of their best albums, and the last two didn't have the same Cure magic as some of the stuff they've done in the past but were still solid albums.
He's dead, you jackass--heart attack in 2003. So technically yes, he's a "has-been" because he's expired. But I guess you're going to hold that against him.
Like I said, when you're a musician or a comedian, it's a matter of courtesy to observe your allotted time when other performers are scheduled after you. They know how much time they have in advance.
"No talent ass-clown." That's original. Are you Mike Judge? Because I heard that exact phrase in Office Space. That's fucking original.
We're all entitled to our opinions and mine is that Robert Palmer was a tool. Don't get so worked up, it's not worth it.
And yes..."no talent ass-clown" was taken from Office Space...I happen to like that movie, I think that quote is funny, and it seems to fit Mr. Palmer very nicely. Peace.
We're all entitled to our opinions? Well thanks for setting me straight because for a minute there I thought I lived in fucking Zimbabwe.
Since you love Office Space so much, I'm going to speak to you in a language you can understand:
Yeah, if you could just go ahead and not talk disparagingly about one of the all-time class acts in the history of music, that'd be greaaat. Mmk? Thaaanks.
Key words, "class act," you dink. It's not like I said he was the greatest musician of all time. He was a good person who respected others, which is more than I can say for The Cure in this video.
For your info, The Cure was told to get off stage or be unplugged by Palmer's roadies after they only played a few songs. The Cure was obviously pissed off, so played one last long song. And their gear was tossed off stage by those roadies too. Real class act there....
actually they were umplugged playing "primary", i have this boot, and it is one of the greatest. If you want to hear "primary" of this bootleg go to my profile.
wow really? because robert palmer was being a dick to not just them, but other people at the concert. and The Cure did nothing back to him; they didn't bash him in front of the crowd, they didn't "get back" at him in any way except playing the song for 10 minutes, even thought Rebert Palmer was a dick to them. so shut the fuck you tool.
wow you are so incredibly right Mr. "Robert Palmer is the best person ever", saying "Fuck Robert Palmer" is the worst thing you could ever say, and is totally worse than unplugging peoples equipment midway through a song(actually i heard they did it multiple times through their set), throwing the band's equipment out of a bus or van or w/e they traveled in(which robert palmer did). Yeah, trashing $2000+ worth of equipment doesn't even compared to saying "Fuck Robert Palmer". You're just a tool
BTW: you called Robert Palmer one of the all time class acts. Really? REALLY? The Cure evolutionized music, and you're calling Robert Palmer one of the all time class acts? Wow. just...wow.....that's pretty sad if you truly think that because Robert Palmer has about as much talent as a dead frog.
Hey man, you were the one being hostile first, all i said was that The Cure didn't do anything to Robert Palmer, you're the one trying to initiate an argument. And if you want me to go away, then simply stop replying to my comments. It's really that simple.
BTW: I'm not gay, but i love how you randomly decide to assume i am, and that I am arguing with you because i am in love with Simon Gallup, despite the fact that this argument started over you making ignorant comments. fuck off
Robert Palmer's "courtesy" also included his road crew unplugging the band's amps during Primary, leaving Lol to hammer it out on his own for over a minute. The amps were turned back on and the band carried on as though nothing had happened. Who were the real pros?
I love this version so much better than the single version. It's such a long end!! I love how Simon yelled "Fuck Robert Palmer and fuck rock'n'roll!!!" at the end. Can't stop watching it, again and again and again and again.
excuse me. who you calling faggot? I've only typed it out like that because I was in a rush. Obviously you've got all the time in the world. Get a fucking job!!
yeah, that was Simon. But it was Robert who said "Fuck Pink Floyd" on a tv interview Oct.17,1980.Good stuff!!!! To see it, type in "the cure interview 1980".
First off, to everyone. Simon said "Fuck Robert Palmer, fuck rock n roll!". Not Robert, he said "I hope you enjoy the rest of it." in a sarcastic tone after playing a 10 minute version of a 4 minute song. Haha!
This IS from Werchter, believe me, it was radio broadcasted on a dutch radio and if you'd listened to the host you'd hear him say " zo sloot simon...op het Werchter Festival 1981"
we'd only been on for about half an hour and everything was running late so robert plamer's road crew started motioning us to stop. this bloke ran on and said 'if you don't stop playing we're gonna pull the plug'. simon immediately walked to the mike and shouted "f*ck robert palmer! f*ck rock'n'roll!" and we started playing a really slow version of 'a forest' which lasted about 15 minutes.
it was a boring variety pop "star" in the 70's 80's. a kind of soft joe cocker or paul young. we could say robbie williams is the robert palmer of the 00's ahahah
"It"? Nice. :-/ Anyway, Robert Palmer was an immensely talented rock/soul/blues singer. He had a few big hits in the 80s (Addicted to Love, Simply Irresistible) that are hardly representative of his range, career, or total catalogue, but sadly they're what everyone remembers him for because the videos were such iconic images.
I can't imagine they're being too much overlap in their fan bases, odd that Palmer and the Cure are playing at the same festival.
That's just the strength of Werchter Auraveda(Torhout-Werchter in those days) to contract populair bands from that time. You can see Metallica next to the Suga Babes, something for everyone.
Before 1980, Robert Palmer had some big hits. Think of Every kinda people, Can we still be friends, Best of both worlds. The Cure was just starting.
Never the less, give me The Cure anytime. I've seen them several times on Werchter (Belgium) and Pinkpop (The Netherlands).
Simon Gallup is actually the one who yelled Fuck Robert Palmer. And I would have said the same thing because palmer's roadies said they would pull the plug on The Cure's set if they didn't stop playing. That's why they had such a long ending on this version of the Forest, they wanted to keep playing.
Seriously. The Cure are more remembered today because they aren't dead yet. XD
I like the cure better nethertheless. I don't really like any of Robert Palmer's songs. (But who beat Robert Palmer on VH1's 100 greatest songs of the 80s? Hmm? Robert Palmer #85, The Cure-#22)
My 1st time viewing this footage. I wasn't aware of Smith's slam at Palmer. I happen to like both of them. Palmer's been in the music biz longer than Smith and was older. I'm sure Smith was still in his punk "piss off" stage. There was probably more to the story.
I was one of Robert Palmers roadies at that gig- it was the festival promoters who told the cure to finish not Robert Palmers road crew- though we did say a few 'things' after the comment especially as i had helped the cure to set up their gear-if the guy in the red vest had got hold of Robert Smith he would have needed a Cure
You're still talking shit? Didn't I see you spinning on your lips in the Addicted to Love Video? Fuck Robert Palmer and anyone who's down with him! They have cremation chambers for fags like you.
Let's not confuse mainstream popularity with talent. Anyone that prefers Palmer over The Cure knows very little about music. The members of The Cure are not only more talented as musicians, but Robert Smith's lyrics and music are by far better than anything Palmer ever wrote. The Cure, some 30 years after their creation, are still a major influence among bands of all genres, a feat Palmer never achieved.
Mainstream? Good God, anyone who had followed Palmer's career knew that he was never what you would call "mainstream". Experimental, ecletic, yes. Read the bios that you can find on the net, Palmer was always searching for new sounds. Never commercial until the 80's and the man had balls enough to follow his own path...
I know quite a bit about music, it having been a course of study for me in school. That said, Palmer started as a guitarist. Look up Vinegar Joe and see where he started. He got the farthest and was going farther when he died. How many can say that?
that festival´s schedule was broken due to some timing issues and its common to have at least the headlining act perform a full show in these cases.
After all, Palmer was the headliner and the audience usually pays to see them. So the Cure was asked (or forced) to stop, but they were allowed to do one more song. Smith added some cool lines ("Such a long end").
Its funny, but basically The Cure (a mere top 20 act at that time) were acting like complete assholes. Still, The Cure owns.
You quite obviously know little about Robert Palmer's career, he's never been mainstream outside a few tracks plucked from otherwise varied and often peculiar albums, all tied together with a great voice capable of an incredible range of musical styles.
And this pitting two completely different artists against each other over what some "roadie" may or may not have done is flat out juvenile and reflects poorly on the fanbase The Cure has.
I like The Cure...and I think it's cool how obnoxious they were... getting kicked offstage for ROBERT PALMER? Addicted To Love is extremely overrated...The Cure totally pawns Robert Palmer...
Did`nt know he died.....But i know he was successfull .."Johnny and mary" maybe...But the rest not really my cuppa... anyway...It`s not worth arguing on the basis of just a single event that happened on that concert imo, as we face 2 complete different genres.....
lol...but ok...Looking at it today...Wheres Palmer? Can anybody besides old farts remember him?? And now, after all these years, go out in the streets and ask whos the cure.....;)))

Who the fuck is Robert Palmer?
xophertm 4 years ago
it was a boring variety pop "star" in the 70's 80's. a kind of soft joe cocker or paul young. we could say robbie williams is the robert palmer of the 00's ahahah
alanbyond 4 years ago
"It"?
Auraveda 4 years ago
That's just the strength of Werchter Auraveda(Torhout-Werchter in those days) to contract populair bands from that time. You can see Metallica next to the Suga Babes, something for everyone.
Before 1980, Robert Palmer had some big hits. Think of Every kinda people, Can we still be friends, Best of both worlds. The Cure was just starting.
Never the less, give me The Cure anytime. I've seen them several times on Werchter (Belgium) and Pinkpop (The Netherlands).

They were just angry young men (practically kids! Maybe 22 in 1981) with punky attitudes... Made for some great music though huh?

fuck rock and roll. I totally agree with simon

Robert Palmer would'nt even dare say "fuck" in any of his concerts!Such a fuckin' long end mr. Robert Palmer!
AnyDubYouLike 4 years ago
Simon Gallup is actually the one who yelled Fuck Robert Palmer. And I would have said the same thing because palmer's roadies said they would pull the plug on The Cure's set if they didn't stop playing. That's why they had such a long ending on this version of the Forest, they wanted to keep playing.
Pigslayer666 4 years ago

I'm a cure fan, this is nice fun footage, but thats a damn punky attitude.
ferlugosi 4 years ago
My 1st time viewing this footage. I wasn't aware of Smith's slam at Palmer. I happen to like both of them. Palmer's been in the music biz longer than Smith and was older. I'm sure Smith was still in his punk "piss off" stage. There was probably more to the story.
RichPerez 4 years ago
Robert Smith wasn't the one who said it. Simon did.
lazatiger 4 years ago 2
I was one of Robert Palmers roadies at that gig- it was the festival promoters who told the cure to finish not Robert Palmers road crew- though we did say a few 'things' after the comment especially as i had helped the cure to set up their gear-if the guy in the red vest had got hold of Robert Smith he would have needed a Cure
nesoya34 4 years ago
You're still talking shit? Didn't I see you spinning on your lips in the Addicted to Love Video? Fuck Robert Palmer and anyone who's down with him! They have cremation chambers for fags like you.

Has anybody got Robert Palmers performance at this concert?
Voxac100b 4 years ago
Let's not confuse mainstream popularity with talent. Anyone that prefers Palmer over The Cure knows very little about music. The members of The Cure are not only more talented as musicians, but Robert Smith's lyrics and music are by far better than anything Palmer ever wrote. The Cure, some 30 years after their creation, are still a major influence among bands of all genres, a feat Palmer never achieved.
GungXHo 4 years ago 2
Agreed.
The Cure's music has way more depth, layers & meaning.
Robert Palmer was an okay artist, but no where near the level of The Cure.
shesSOelectric 4 years ago
Mainstream? Good God, anyone who had followed Palmer's career knew that he was never what you would call "mainstream". Experimental, ecletic, yes. Read the bios that you can find on the net, Palmer was always searching for new sounds. Never commercial until the 80's and the man had balls enough to follow his own path...
Paden1865 4 years ago 3
I know quite a bit about music, it having been a course of study for me in school. That said, Palmer started as a guitarist. Look up Vinegar Joe and see where he started. He got the farthest and was going farther when he died. How many can say that?
Paden1865 4 years ago
that festival´s schedule was broken due to some timing issues and its common to have at least the headlining act perform a full show in these cases.
Still, The Cure owns.
metzl0r 4 years ago
You quite obviously know little about Robert Palmer's career, he's never been mainstream outside a few tracks plucked from otherwise varied and often peculiar albums, all tied together with a great voice capable of an incredible range of musical styles.
And this pitting two completely different artists against each other over what some "roadie" may or may not have done is flat out juvenile and reflects poorly on the fanbase The Cure has.
quaestor1968 4 years ago
I like The Cure...and I think it's cool how obnoxious they were... getting kicked offstage for ROBERT PALMER? Addicted To Love is extremely overrated...The Cure totally pawns Robert Palmer...
JohnnySwitchblade 4 years ago
yea!!! palmer sucks!
AnonYmous17 4 years ago
Did`nt know he died.....But i know he was successfull .."Johnny and mary" maybe...But the rest not really my cuppa... anyway...It`s not worth arguing on the basis of just a single event that happened on that concert imo, as we face 2 complete different genres.....
warminator 4 years ago
lol...but ok...Looking at it today...Wheres Palmer? Can anybody besides old farts remember him?? And now, after all these years, go out in the streets and ask whos the cure.....;)))
