Woaaah, you really hate intellectuals and professors. There seems to be a lot of whitewashing of professors, even though they are a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds. Not all of them are Atheists either. I'm not sure where this anti-intellectualism comes from (other than the obvious background of being American with its long history of anti-intellectualism). These places of higher learning, if they do it right, encourage debate and free speech...what's wrong with that?

I've never had a professor that has given out information without some kind of back up (whether that be a statistic, or a study). So, I have no idea where any of this is coming from. College is a great time to step out of the bubble your parents put you in and learn the real truth of the world, god isn't real. Take a single science class, it's pretty obvious after that.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping you were speaking generally, but sometimes people surprise you. But yeah, there are some professors, especially in certain types of science, that care more about teaching their subject than political views.
It does seem you see professors start giving their view points more in the liberal arts area. I had one in moral philosophy that couldn't keep his mouth shut on where he stood. Of course there's a few that refuse to tell their opinions, those I love.
I have quite a bit of education in the liberal arts and I will just ask you to take my word for it, they have lost the script.
I fear this is a bad thing for education and it is especially bad for guys like your father. I have a few very good friends who are college profs and they all fear they are going to go down with the ship so to speak.

As for professors, I prefer to just be taught the facts on the subject and leave it as that. If professors want to talk about their personal opinions about politics and the like, then just do it outside of class time if students really want to hear his/her point of view.
I am an atheist and I still agree with you about college. They do try to push Marxist, feminist, etc. agendas of indoctrination. I hate college professors and yuppies. I hate neo this and neo that. All of my professors have been well-balanced and objective in regard to religion. They were always careful to provide strong evidence any one of the very few times they challenged the Christian majority. A Christian majority, whose grip, I might add, is so strong on US politics that it threatens the practice of intellectually honest study at Universities itself.

OK, that's a fair question. I actually don't claim to know at all. I just don't think we know enough about the nature of space-time to really be sure. The math seems to indicate that space-time is finite but unbound. Just like the total surface area of the Earth is finite, but you can travel forever in one direction and never get to "the end." If that is the case, then concepts like "eternity" and "infinity" are both applicable and inapplicable at the same time. It's a bit counter-intuitive.
NAd all of it goes in circles and leads to no answers at all. Why are we here. How can all of this chaos lead to such beautiful design. Why do we believe in God? Where did this matter come from? Was it always there? Is it possible there is a God?

I went to Kent State and I can verify that this does happen, more politically than religiously though. I asked someone else to check out the film "Indoctrinate U". You probably won't like it but the facts presented should be a wake up call. And the treatment of anyone considering themselves "conservative" on campus, is absolutely disgusting. I hope you will watch and take in the information just as if Michael Moore had made the movie.
You really expect someone to sit through thousands of hours of lectures to find some examples for you? don't you think they edit out anything that other faculty would consider questionable? I don't know what college you went to (given your apparent knowledge, or lack there of, regarding the sciences I'm not even certain you went to college) but I've been to college, and I've returned to college and interestingly enough, my instructors talk about the subject they're teaching. I'm sure there's an instructor that once occasionally does what you claim, but not that often.
Secondly, many instructors are also working in they're field not just teaching.

In Brock's defense, I actually switched colleges bacause I had 2 "professors" that would not shut up about the Bush administration. In a 50 minute class, we spent 0 minutes learning, several times. One was an accounting class (not economics where politics might be reasonable). The other, an information technology course. To this day I cannot figure out financial record keeping or the internet... I don't pretend to know more than the professors, but I didn't need their politics for any reason.

Well, I'm sure they're a minority of atheists (I think the majority of atheists fall into three groups - social democrat, liberal or libertarian) but if you scroll down that page, there are links to other blogs and conservative atheist groups.
Though personally, I think many of these labels have outlived their usefulness - most people don't easily fit into political boxes, and there are a number of continua that people might be placed on. It's a complex world.

@angelsoulblade Yeah swearing and the like don't really get much accomplished. Being honestly straight forward and listening is golden. As for professors, I prefer to just be taught the facts on the subject and leave it as that. If professors want to talk about their personal opinions about politics and the like, then just do it outside of class time if students really want to hear his/her point of view.

Artistic, yes. Factually accurate? Not in my experience as a college graduate and PhD student.
All of my professors have been well-balanced and objective in regard to religion. They were always careful to provide strong evidence any one of the very few times they challenged the Christian majority. A Christian majority, whose grip, I might add, is so strong on US politics that it threatens the practice of intellectually honest study at Universities itself.

i realize that the halls of acedemia are lined with liberal pie-in-the-sky-minded socialistic thinking professors. i'm happy to say that i went to college in 1979 and graduated in 1985 (yes, six years, get over it) and that back then the professorship seemed to be about evenly split between liberal and conservative minds. further, i realize that like the media, hollywood, rock stars, acedemia has devolved into this sad state we see today.

Science doesn't know what was at the beginning. We only have evidence of what the universe was like at 10^43 seconds after the Big Bang. At that point the evidence is showing that the four fundamental forces where combined in one force. Then was the grand unification epoch, where the strong nuclear force and gravitation separated. Then electroweak epoch followed by the inflationary epoch.

You are asking the wrong question. First, we don't know that there ever was a time when there was no universe, so as it stands, the universe need never have been created. Second, the question you should be asking is "what, if anything created the universe?" And no, even if there are atheists that believe that the universe is eternal, it is absurd to claim that they worship it like a god. Atheists by definition do not believe in any gods. This is why you get called names. You presume too much.

OK, that's a fair question. I actually don't claim to know at all. I just don't think we know enough about the nature of space-time to really be sure. The math seems to indicate that space-time is finite but unbound. Just like the total surface area of the Earth is finite, but you can travel forever in one direction and never get to "the end." If that is the case, then concepts like "eternity" and "infinity" are both applicable and inapplicable at the same time. It's a bit counter-intuitive.

No one knows anything, yet scientists do their experiments within a closed system and cannot test anything outside of their boundaries. The best they can do is look far out into space.

I think that we would first have to establish an intrinsic purpose first, then we can ask what it is. Caos leading to beautiful design? Brain cancer doesn't seem too beautiful to me. Why do we believe in God? Not all of us do. Why matter and was it always here? Well that's what we're trying to figure out. But science works because it has boundaries, not despite.

Wow...Really? Not that some college courses aren't useless but come on. Would you allow a doctor to operate on you with out technical proficiency? Or an engineer to design your skyscrapers without advanced mathematics? Pretty bold claim to think all formal education is useless, where did you get your degree? Harvard on the highway? Most of college is self taught and professor moderated. That is why you sit in a class for 50 min then study it for 4+ hrs a day.

I went to Kent State and I can verify that this does happen, more politically than religiously though. I asked someone else to check out the film "Indoctrinate U". You probably won't like it but the facts presented should be a wake up call. And the treatment of anyone considering themselves "conservative" on campus, is absolutely disgusting. I hope you will watch and take in the information just as if Michael Moore had made the movie.

I recommend you save yourself the effort and watch the video above again. TAA claims that there is pretty much *nothing else* in college lectures but bullshit. It shouldn't take thousands of hours to find evidence!
Regarding possible editing, from what I have seen the clips are full length sessions.
Please don't watch them to please me, rather find something interesting and use the opportunity to learn something.

I randomly selected one yesterday and didn't get 3 minutes into it before he started talking (badly) about the Bush administration. turns out it was an economics class though and he was talking about a (then) current event. Actually, I think TAA is saying that there are liberal professors that "indoctrinate" you. But probably most of them are okay.

The two are ALMOST always linked. Politics and religion are common bedfellows. Of course there are exceptions. But for the most part, leftist liberals are atheists or "religiously relaxed" and the conservative right is normally Faith based (Jewish, Catholic, Christian, etc....). I am sure Brock knows that. I don't know what college you went to (given your apparent knowledge, or lack there of, regarding the sciences I'm not even certain you went to college) but I've been to college, and I've returned to college and interestingly enough, my instructors talk about the subject they're teaching. I'm sure there's an instructor that once occasionally does what you claim, but not that often.
Secondly, many instructors are also working in they're field not just teaching.
Perhaps you should go to college.

In Brock's defense, I actually switched colleges bacause I had 2 "professors" that would not shut up about the Bush administration. In a 50 minute class, we spent 0 minutes learning, several times. One was an accounting class (not economics where politics might be reasonable). The other, an information technology course. To this day I cannot figure out financial record keeping or the internet... I don't pretend to know more than the professors, but I didn't need their politics for any reason.

Well, I'm sure they're a minority of atheists (I think the majority of atheists fall into three groups - social democrat, liberal or libertarian) but if you scroll down that page, there are links to other blogs and conservative atheist groups.
Though personally, I think many of these labels have outlived their usefulness - most people don't easily fit into political boxes, and there are a number of continua that people might be placed on. It's a complex world.
