  • is that a frickin green screen brick wall!?? lol

  • beautiful telecaster !

  • Wow, theres a lot of haters on here, if you listen to this guy for the first 20 seconds all is revealed and its a handy tip to know, he's not saying that Keith plays like this, he's saying that if you are in standard tuning or arent practiced in open G you can replicate the sound. Sounds good to me.

  • I think there are so many TROLLS who doesnt have anything better to do ... The guy does it well, you can choose to do it or not, but what the hell is bad with some people??

  • To @aaron 544: Tune your guitar on stage in two minutes while your singer creates "stage banter"? Have an open G guitar ready to go and just switch guitars? Duhhhhhhh! Anyone who would go to the lengths of this guitar teacher to teacher to teach barring that spans these frets, when G tuning is so simple, has to has his head examined. And Aaron, why in the hell does it take you "less than TWO MINUTES" to tune your guitar with a tuner? Ahhhh, guitarists, the most egotistical people in the world!

  • @wangdaofa Actually... Lead Singers... ARE the most egotestical (purposely spelled wrong)

  • Yeah, not so much, but thanks for your efforts. I'll bet you sound great in Open G, dude.

  • Real question is... why WOULD you try to "emulate" Richards' style in standard tuning when open-G tuning is easy, available and far more authentic-sounding. This all seems pretty academic and a waste of time to me. You're a good player, but part of learning your craft is exploring new techniques and not being stuck in a certain type of tuning. It takes me 30 seconds to tune into open-G by ear. Describing your video as "the rhythm playing of Keith Richards" is ludicrous.

  • anybody who knows anything about guitar playing will understand that this guy is great..he shows the best way to emulate keith's style in standard tuning..because unlike keith , most of us don't have a second guitarist to back them up . my two cents

  • omg! i just saw the eric johnson thing and he's faking open g just like the gentleman who posted this lesson! what an incredible amount of work to avoid detuning 2 strings...(which takes 20 secs)

  • i'm sorry but...if you can't tell which stones songs are in open g, u have no business playing in the 1st place. need i mention black crowes & sheryl crowe?

  • give me a break. you can't play Keith in anything but open.

  • why make life difficult with those finger stretches, just tune the bloody thing to open G it is really not a major problem and they really don't sound right in standard tuning anyway.

  • My god people why do you like Kieth so much really ? Explain it to me ! Am I missing something here?

  • @kevykev38 If you don't know, then nobody can really explain it to you. So sorry for your loss.

  • @spacedoginnebraska No ..No loss here at all.

  • @kevykev38 Indeed.

  • @spacedoginnebraska Nope absolutely no loss here Sir.

  • I'm tired of looking at this dudes junk. He needs a diffrent camera angle

  • christ , I can tune into G tuning in about 20 seconds!!!!......and I'm a hack guitarist!!

  • dude you look retarded and ur fingers look deformed when you play like that. You gotta play bar chords Hendrix style with the thumb wrapped around the neck. Looking badass is part of being a good guitarist. True self taught electric guitarists know that.

  • Yeah, like that guy said, why not tune yer geetar like Keef's and you won't have to use your pinky at all... it makes playing while being drunk a lot easier, also you will sound like Keef! After I tuned my guitar to Open G it's practically impossible not to sound like the stones...

  • Why not just tune your guitar like Keef if you want to play like Keef? How does struggling to do it in 'standard tuning' make it 'accessible' ? not a very helpful video Mr. Expert. I wonder how many people you've discouraged with this one?

  • Can you show us how Keith ' flips the beat' as in the intro to Start Me Up?? Thanks

  • 18 people have figured out that playing like Keith in anything but open G is a waste of time.

  • ohh man thats a really great tone you have going on in this video, what are plugging that tele into?

  • This sounds nothing at all like Keith.

  • Utter bollocks.

If you want to play like Keith, then tune the guitar like Keith you clueless tit.

  • This sounds like shit. Tune to open G like Keith or leave it!

  • @jto1916 Here here!!!

  • How not to play like Keith Richards...

  • yea 5 strings

  • You have no clue!

5 strings, not 6, and please tune it g-d-g-b-d

  • Orrrrrrrr ya' could just tune your guitar D-G-D-G-B-D and get the voicing correct and all.....

  • nice package

  • @aaronegginton He he thats what I thought !! x

  • nice info.. BUT please do not refer to Keith please. You sound like a band called Sweet... puke

  • awesome!!!

  • I dig it! Playing in a band you don't have time to tune to an open this or that key. While that positions are surely more uncomfortable than Keith's open G, you have to do what you have to do to be versitale to the rest of your show.

  • @aaron544: Nonsense. I can tune to open G in less than two minutes on stage with a tuner. My singer just creates some stage banter while I tune up and we are ready to go. The real problem are people that do Stones songs that DON'T tune to open G. It doesn't sound the same and frankly, it sounds terrible.

Don't take my word for it. Read Keith's new book and he says the exact same thing. He hates hearing guitarists in bar bands do his songs that aren't in open G.

  • @tomthefunky Open G is cool for rhythm but pretty shit for lead so that's why you would play these in standard. Keith is so wasted 90 % of the time that HE doesn't sound good doing Stones tunes!!!

  • @bbnatedogg: Open G sounds like shit for lead guitar? Maybe YOU sound like shit playing lead in open G, but a well skilled player whose accustomed to the tuning can improvise quite nicely.

  • @tomthefunky Choke on a diznack son!!!

  • @tomthefunky

    2 minutes? That's so long!

  • @WoWintosh: Well, I guess you and I will never be in a band together. I suppose that's a good thing because I prefer to play music for women who like to dance rather than a room full of lonely guys with their arms folded all night. Judging by your taste in music, that's exactly the audience we'd attract.

  • @tomthefunky

What the hell? I was only saying that I think that 2 minutes is a little long to be tuning up. I mean, come on! It's an open chord for Christ's sake! No need to insult my (very broad) taste in music, hell I like playing everything, country, djent, jazz, metal, fusion, classic rock, blues, surely not all of that music is played to lonely-folded-arm-men, right?

  • Comment removed

  • @tomthefunky you're exactly right. I learned the right way to play some of his riffs and i picked up his use of different tunings to find the right sound for a song.

  • @theplourde: Let me know any songs you want to know what tuning it's in. Might make things easier for you.

  • @tomthefunky Uhm I can only think of the songs Soul Survivor and You Got the Silver

  • @theplourde: Soul Survivor is in open G. You Got The Silver is in open E with a capo on the first fret.

  • if keith would play this way you wouldnt even know his name :D

  • nice video and sound quality ... but where is the " like keith richards" here ??

  • 0.12 he plays whaaatt???????? cannot understand what he say's speak fackin english you cant!!!!

  • @Wiklkstar In an open tuning.

  • @Wiklkstar in an open tuning you idiot ;P how could u not understand that?

  • To much shadow on that key. No shadow would look more natural. Great playing though lol.

  • Yoo gringo... have u ever listen rock ? what u got has nothing to do with keith richards men. would be better to remove the clip so then you dont messed other beginners mind with that stupid style. Fucker

  • Man, this is complicated

  • wouldnt it just be easer to play open g take off the low e string

    sounds way better!!!!!!!!!

  • @420nzrep Yes I agree!

  • too much effort...let it G!!!!

  • You'll never get the sound right in standard tuning.

  • @TolekBonanno EXACTLY!!!

and it'll never sound right with the 6th string still on the guitar (get rid of it)

  • fuck......keith god....

  • ...why are you muting the a string and playing the same A your muting at at 5th fret e string....looks very fancy but honely i dont get this

  • @ragingstorm33

Because Keith plays in open-g, but this guy was too lazy to tune the guitar

  • @Arbiterisl33t69 Lazy? That stuff is a bit harder to play in standard tuning, I think he did good... not as good as Keef tough.

  • @Arbiterisl33t69 good guitarists are pretty lazy when playing, I think. They always look for the most efficient way of playing music. But they practise up to 12 hours a day for getting better every day.

  • what kind of telecaster is that? Anyone know?

  • sounds like dr. feelgood

  • most beginning players would find this too difficult.......great effort.......anyway, open tuning can be great fun

  • @IdolHans

That's a qite interesting lesson 'cause I get the Style figured out quickly and that's what it's all about. When you are on stage and you have only one guitar to go and lots of songs to play you won't have to re-tune your guitar.

Keith just uses this tuning 'cause HE likes it.

  • Lots of people have said it already but, hey, come one! If you want to play anything that Keith plays in open tunings (particularly open G) you have to tune down. It's only one step down on three strings and it makes the world of difference.

Not only do you get the absolutely correct sound but you always get a feel for Keith's rhythm style due to the chord shapes and open strings.

There's no substitute. Besides it's fun to learn how to play your instrument in different ways.

  • it's all open G tuning----DGDGBD. Easy to go into and out of from standard (EADGBE) tuning. Why all the fuss? Open G is easy to get to!

  • this sounds nothing like keefs tuning. you gotta have the high string to do it right. really - how hard is it to drop the e and a? uh, not very hard. instead of learning how to approximate the sound, leanr the tuning and do it right. rather than "making his world accessable" you can find a whole new world of possibilities i nopen tunings! How many folks here heard of Albert Collins? OK, how many knew he played in Dm!

  • To say that it's as easy as knowing the G tuning is simplistic. Keith Richards uses a lot of B.B. King stuff as well as Chuck Berry. There's also a lot of odd ball things he does in standard tuning that comprise a good portion of the Stones catalog (virtually all of the pre-1968 stuff). Plus, you don't need to remove the 6th string to imitate Richards in the G tuning. It makes things a little easier, but it's not necessary.

  • Hey, for all you guys that insist on playing in open G with 5 strings and such, some of us hate to tune and re tune and cant afford or dont want the hassle of having 2-3 guitars with us at all times. I play all stones in standard tuning, no capo. That way you can play anywhere with any guitar without hassles and you dont need someone behind you grabbibg the neck to make a capo..............LOL.........but its good for a laugh. Cheers......

  • Uhhhhh....why dont we just learn open tuning to make the styles of Keith Richards available to us? There are plenty of videos that show how to tune to Open G.

But of course, there IS a reason Keith Richards is Keith Richards, and the Rolling Stones are the Rolling Stones....

  • how do you flip that guitar pick to your thumb :o

  • what amp are you using?

  • What a waste of time. Play 5 string like Keith if you want that sound, it's a Fuck of alot easier.

  • im sorry man but this sounds nothing like keith richards. keep it simple, he plays in an open tuning for a reason

  • This trickier than it looks. Nice playing and instruction.

  • wow, cool! tough stretch though

  • Keith USES THE OPEN G TUNING in lots of songs, that´s why the "Start me up", "Street Fighting man", "Brown Sugar" "Jumping Jack Flash" etc. Have a such unique and powerful sound

  • Actually Jumpin Jack Flash was open e, but usually he used a regular tunuing live.

  • Nice but Keith only plays with 5 strings anyway!

  • cute.. but take off the low E string.. beginners will have fun messin with the REAL tuning

  • Yeah ! Very Keith !!!

  • nice
