So far I've tried this thrice, each time using all the designated ingredients in their proper amounts and with my stove on medium. Yet each time at around 200-250 degrees F, my mixture turns a sort of beer-bottle brown and doesn't bubble as much as shown in the video. The temperature tops out at around 280, and I end up with sticky brown glass when I finally pour. Please, what the heck am I doing wrong?

I'm not certain but I think the cream of tartar is like almond extract. It helps to remove the air bubbles.

@TheKoreankid360 They've pretty much phased use of mercury out of thermometer making. and plus, Dropping it in really shouldn't do much. All the top of cooking thermometers of that build do is provide some sort of holster so that it can attach to the side of the pot.

@TheSammyLV Yes, it is safe to eat. This is basically like making hard candy. In fact 300 degrees in candy making is called the "hard crack" stage. The cream of tartar helps prevent crystalization. It is also used to stabilize egg whites when making meringue, and is combined with baking soda to form baking powder.

I'm semi-happy. I completed this build (except put every ingredient on half the amount, because I was using a smaller pan.), however it ended up really thick. I attempted to break the stuff with my head, but only caused pain with no breakage. So, I took a hammer to it, popped some in my mouth, and here we are now. *Note; This stuff is INCREDIBLY sweet.
