Using new information obtained from studies of old Soviet files in Moscow and now the famous Vanona Intercepts -- FBI recordings of Soviet embassy communications between 1944-48 -- the record is showing that McCarthy was essentially right. He had many weaknesses, but almost every case he charged has now been proven correct. Whether it was stealing atomic secrets or influencing U.S. foreign policy, communist victories in the 1940s were fed by an incredibly vast spy and influence network.
As for Venezuelan oil prices...I don't know where the statement came from, but when did oil prices justify a government system? Some things belong to the public, but oil and gas aren't on the list until the money is exchanged. What's under the land belongs to he or she who owns the land. If they want to drill they should be allowed to and if they don't, they shouldn't be forced to by a government agency that "owns the oil under the land" that a person owns. Offshore is a bit more complicated.
If the oil companies want to drill on our shores what better time would it be than now to strike a fixed price for them utilizing the countries natural resources.
We fix a price and they are guaranteed a fixed profit.
Obviously nobody owns offshore property other than the public at large.
Fixed prices on a nations resources in "international waters" could be a fun thing. Consider this: drilling offshore would mean we stake a claim 5 miles across the Gulf of Mexico from the Venezuelans. Oh, we better charge them a fixed price too because that's OUR country's resources because our public at large owns it. How far do our borders go into the water? Another aspect would be that a "fixed price" would mean fixed profit. Fixed profits that are too low mean "pursue other investments"
How about a fixed profit above fair operating expenses ?
Obviously at some point energy will become a military vulnerability and something will have to be done about it regardless. I don't even really care about the oil prices themselves, I don't use that much to make me piss about it.
The borders I believe are five to ten miles out to sea. It has already been established, anybody invading that space better have a good excuse, so it is natural to assume that we can drill there.
I'm with you on how much I care about prices. My bicycle gets me through town faster anyway. Can we say obesity problem solved too? I also agree that it's a military vulnerability to have a shortage of oil for a mechanized military. I think T. Boone Pickens may have the best plan when said in a blanket statement of "if we can do it, why are we talking about it instead of doing it?" I don't think oil is our future, but why can't we tide ourselves over until we find something?
The point at which I disagree is whether there is a "fair expenses" clause. I think the free market will fix itself. Supply and demand curves are too complex for me to even think about but with the supply coming in and NEW TECHNOLOGY (why are we afraid of what made this country what it is?) the prices will fall and along with those falling prices we'll find economic prosperity due to the jobs create, just keep the gov't out except for tax bonuses to companies creating these jobs and products.
Why not ?, the myth perpetuated by the elite is that anything belonging to the public domain is socialist.
Clearly there are things that belong to us as a nation. I think that the oil underneath our countries dirt and it's bordering waters are not the property of only those wealthy enough to petition the government to give it to them.
Too last time I checked Venezuela was not having a problem with high gas prices. Before Hugo there were some problems, I think he rightfully asserted that the oil in Venezuala belonged to them and not multi-nationals.
The point at which I disagree is that there is a free market system in the United States.
Almost everything is more geared towards gaming the markets than freeing them.
I can't disagree that there isn't a free market system in the US. The government has its nose into everything, and I disagree with it. I think there should be something in place to protect the land owners when there's drilling, but if the oil companies can buy the land they deserve to drill freely within the boundaries that are on the surface. Who says that my pasture land is only what's on the surface? The nutrients and rocks in the soil are mine too. Why is oil different?
People wonder why gas cost so much. Next time you go to the pump imagine this number
$9,500,000,000,000.00 Then imagine this one
$31,666.66 Thats how much you owe! Then think about the Federal Reserve (private bank) printing this much money $1,000,000,000.00 EVERY DAY/ EVERY WEEK OUT OF THIN AIR!
TODAY BUSH JUST SIGNED $3,900,000,000.00 for the "housing crisis". AMERICA DOES NOT HAVE $3,900,000,000.00 Dollars. So the Federal Reserve (private bank) will print
The national debt is now at $9.5 trillion dollars.
What is $9,500,000,000,000.00 divided by 300 million people? That means that every man, woman, child, infant, grandma, little sis, even the family dog, owes approximately $31,666.66 dollars. Did you know that you owe China $31,666.66 Dollars? The government spends money. The Gov. Does not have any money they are spending our money and our children's money. We need less government not more! Socialist go Libertarian help your selves.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy will need months to recover from a growth slowdown caused by a home mortgage crisis, turmoil in financial markets and high energy prices, Treasure Secretary Henry Paulson said on Sunday.
Twelve months in a year, right?
Actually, it's a tossup whether the US economy will ever recover.
If one has not noticed, the USD is no longer the world reserve currency.
Keep your ear to the ground, this is what is happening already. NATO governments have been putting things in motion since the millennium to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. The high price of oil (which atm has nothing to do with supply and demand) will be it's own undoing ;)
**we need to get rid of dependance on oil. THEN all our problems will be fixed**
But what do replace the thing we make Fertilizer,pesticide,anti-cancer drugs, synthetic asprin and other medicine,Synthetic rubber, the 12 kinds of plastic your computer/ipod/cellphone is made of,the 32 plastics your car is made of,the Carbon fiber for Windmills, the made of 14 plastics ICU that saved a Premie babies life, the plastic lining that makes your coffee stay in a paper cup, toothpaste, makeup, etc besides gas?
how about using the oil reserves we have in here instead of bringing them oversees and power our cars and trucks with electric power or something else? i'm only taliking about the amount of oil we use to power our vehicles
**how about using the oil reserves we have in here instead of bringing them oversees and power our cars and trucks with electric power or something else?*

Up to recently domestic drilling was banned cause of the same Enviromental Activist lobbying Congress to get us off Foriegn oil..lol
And now post Elections the Environuts are trying to get the ban back on
We can't "get off foreign oil" cause of the dumbassed Environuts
Hey TheRealArchAngel why dont you shut the Hell up you Neo Facist piece of Shit.
If we drill we wont have problems. This country was built on petrolium and it will stay that way. We cleaned the air and water up in the up in the 80s. Now Al Gores like you are taking it to a new delusional high. Take your windpower and shove it up your Gay ass. If no longer use oil the Russians will will be camped out in your back yard. If you dont understand that then you need to move to France.
**Take your windpower and shove it up your Gay ass.**
Youre Wrong, if I support any alternative power it would be Geothermal because Solar panels don't work on Rainy days and Windmills don't woirk when there isn't any wind but thje deep earth is always hot
Personally I do not see why we just can't improve out Coal technology to be even cleaner and start to fraction that Commodity into the componets that could replace the need for foriegn oil cionsidering it is our major resource
Not a Liberal, just clearly a socialist. I don't like to be rude but the only reason the US is the "best" (depending on viewpoint. (I like it) and most economically powerful country because of its previously staunch support of libertarianism and capitalism. Socialism gets you nowhere, and creates a slave out of you. Quite literally.
is that so? The constitution had no guiding principles? The foundation and principles of their ideals can be found in their writings. One rather comprehensive compilation is called the Federalist Papers.
Military units in Iraq and elsewhere will see another hike in fuel costs next week, the second midyear increase because of soaring oil prices.
On July 1, the cost for refined fuel used by troops will jump from $127.68 a barrel to $170.94 — an astounding 34 percent jump in just six months and more than double what the Pentagon was paying three years ago. It's the second increase since prices were set at the beginning of the budget year, on Oct. 1.
In my opinion, the two biggest factors in oil's high price are the weakness in the U.S. dollar's exchange value and the liquidity that the Federal Reserve is pumping out.
National publicly own corporation, whatever you call it, not run by the politicians. Since 60 percent of oil is imported, oil would still have to purchased but domestic oil sold at cost or just above would bring the price down and also short-circuit the currency collapse.
There are other benefits as well--too complex to detail.
Doing it rationally might work.
Bush and Cheney produced this disaster, though Clinton helped.
I was refering to "our" oil companies as in U.S. oil companies as opposed to the national oil companies or foreign owned. But by virtue of being a stock holder (albeit a very very minor one), yes I do own them.
Nationalizing oil would be the biggest fucking disaster America could ever face. These fucking idiots in Congress bankrupted their own Congressional restaurant and you idiots want to put them in charge of something important like the life blood of the country?
"In three years every Frenchman can know how to read. Do you think that we shall be the better off? Imagine on the other hand that in each commune, there was ONE bourgeois, only one, who had read Bastiat, and that this bourgeois was respected, things would change."
comm = soviet, cap=us. Yes, I suppose that is my perspective. But even if I remove those associations, my comment seems to hold true. Hard core communists such as china and russia have moved towards capitalism and free markets, no?.
And 2+2=4 implies there is but one basic truth which you think you have possession of. That hardly seems to be the case.
I quickly checked out Bastiat on wikipedia. I like his views. You and I may have more in common that I thought. It would appear that they don't produce Frenchmen like him anymore. Yet earlier you advcated nationalizing the oil companies. Seems to be in contradiction to the ideals of Bastiat. what's up with that?
Actually, Granite46, they do produce a lot a Frenchman like Bastiat still. You just never hear about them inthe Anglo-phile, English only, Know-nothing media.
What they are no longer producing in great quantity are educated, intelligent Americans with any awareness of their own history or literature.
I'm inclined to agree with you, mopsius. The media is principally interested in the pursuit of scandal. And important base level education has been replaced by focused watered down specialties. And it's not just history and literature. It's the sciences too. Most educated people have just enough knowledge to talk foolishly.
When the state controls resources it has the power to control freedom of movement and basic liberty and personal choice. It can say who can buy what-- and when -- and at what price. The citizen exists at the whim of the state. All the citizens' choices could --under a worst case scenario-- be predicted and controlled by the state by restricting access to commodities.
All right, I think you're a waste of my time too. But my ideas aren't naive. They're the ideas that were espoused by Adam Smith and the founding fathers and worked for hundreds of years.
1) Explain why Adam Smith was naive. I haven't read David Ricardo, but it sounds like they had similar ideas.
2) And that is the foundation of our entire economic system.
3) A truly free market is different from a decentralized market. In a free market, the government works to keep the market free.
4) Maybe it isn't. Maybe you're the naive one to think that the government can run the oil industry better than the market can. Again, name me one time that socialism has truly worked.
Isn't it a disgrace. Congress passes useless bills to make it look like they are doing something rather than actually doing something meaningful. Elected nitwits.
ha ha, you dumb bitch. but she said what I think a lot of the democrats are thinking and may not even realize the gravity of it: that the gov't can solve all of our problems, which is the opposite of what i believe and quite contrary to the founding principles of this country.
If she thinks We, the People, will allow her to do anything of the sort, she is delusional.
Increasing domestic drilling capacity is the only way to offset the supply side of this equation. The government needs to get the Hell out of the way.
The answer to oil prices is to take consumer action , not the silly "don't buy gas on Monday" idea, but something real .. I suggest that all of us makes a vow, that for the next six months we do not buy Gas from Exxon Mobil ..This is not to say that this is the worst offender .. but it will send the strongest message to the industry whilst not causing the consumer any real problem .. there are lots of other gas stations.. Let everyone pick this up, tell your friends and see the prices fall.
That will have little effect because it does not address supply and demand. The people will only end up buying from another supplier. If you want to have effect, enough people must truly conserve and buy less fuel from everyone! Then you have reduced demand and maintained supply.
US Currency exchange rates have alot to do with the rise in oil price, I agree. But the laws of supply and demand were not suspended. Both forces are at work. Maybe not equally, but neither entirely. The answer is plainly not that simple. Many forces effect price. Exchange rates and S&D are, in my view, the most influential however.
The market cost of oil exists and continues to increase because we the people need it and are willing to pay for it. It would have no value otherwise. The value of oil in the ground before expenditure of effort to drill and pump is the value created by all of us and if my sense of business is correct the one who creates the value should get to keep it. After it is pumped, transported etc., those who do that are entitled to recover their costs plus. Why do we give them the value we create?
Our ability to refine oil has decreased by more then 50% because the government will not let them upgrade their refineries. Why don't we do the little things and get self sufficent.
Almost everything you use is made from refined oil. From plastic to engine oil, in made from it. All your machines that are used for processing goods uses oil. So in essence you would have to plant your own food and walk to work everyother Friday. With China and India comming online they would more then make up for our efforts. To drop the price, try drilling, neuclear, coal to oil, shall and getting our country off of forgien oil!!
Nationalization, however, doesn't cure these ills, and it can deprive a nation of its rightful take of its natural wealth in other ways. One is simply lack of know-how. One reason President Evo Morales of Bolivia pulled back from his threats to radically nationalize the country's gas industry is that Bolivian officials realize they cannot manage the business themselves.
If you think Bush-Cheney are so bad, what makes you think the next bozos will be any better? And you want to give them a nationalized oil monopoly. Every liberal socialist idea never makes any sense!
Government can't balance a budget. How can they be expected to drill for and find oil beneath a mile of ocean? Not that it matters. Congress doesn't let them drill much anymore anyway.
The President doesn't cut interest rates, the Federal Bank does. When you cut interest rates you weaken the dollar. Mexico has decreased its output by 50% in the last 10 years. Our demand for oil as increased. The Saudi's have just opened one of their last oil fields. China and India are consumming oil at a larger rate then ever and are increasing their demand everyday. The demand is going up and OPEC will not increase its output. Supply and Demand. DRILL IN THE US!!!
Well - the americans are somewhat insular sometimes. Another country that chose to put oil exploration into the hands of government is the socialist hellhole of - wait for it - Norway.
Due to that, Norway is the 3rd richest country in the world, GDP PP - while the US is no. 10.
Face it: The "science" of economics is infested with the pus of political ideology.
She certainly is. Her whining, her arrogance, her unprofessional response along with exaggerated claims of her power... Telltale signs of an ignorant liberal.
Her attitude is one of all the people in DC, with the exception of a few good ones, this attitude is we will do whatever we want, we are the Govt. and will just take control cuz we have the power. They are the servants to the people, and Govt. should fear it's people.
Most awkward pregnant silence ever. At least she got to say what she really meant!

Offshore is a bit more complicated.
connslvr 3 years ago
If the oil companies want to drill on our shores what better time would it be than now to strike a fixed price for them utilizing the countries natural resources.
We fix a price and they are guaranteed a fixed profit.
Obviously nobody owns offshore property other than the public at large.
WinkenBlinkenAndNod 3 years ago
Fixed prices on a nations resources in "international waters" could be a fun thing. Consider this: drilling offshore would mean we stake a claim 5 miles across the Gulf of Mexico from the Venezuelans. Oh, we better charge them a fixed price too because that's OUR country's resources because our public at large owns it. How far do our borders go into the water? Another aspect would be that a "fixed price" would mean fixed profit. Fixed profits that are too low mean "pursue other investments"
connslvr 3 years ago
How about a fixed profit above fair operating expenses ?
Obviously at some point energy will become a military vulnerability and something will have to be done about it regardless. I don't even really care about the oil prices themselves, I don't use that much to make me piss about it.
WinkenBlinkenAndNod 3 years ago
The borders I believe are five to ten miles out to sea. It has already been established, anybody invading that space better have a good excuse, so it is natural to assume that we can drill there.
WinkenBlinkenAndNod 3 years ago
I'm with you on how much I care about prices. My bicycle gets me through town faster anyway. Can we say obesity problem solved too? I also agree that it's a military vulnerability to have a shortage of oil for a mechanized military. I think T. Boone Pickens may have the best plan when said in a blanket statement of "if we can do it, why are we talking about it instead of doing it?" I don't think oil is our future, but why can't we tide ourselves over until we find something?
connslvr 3 years ago
The point at which I disagree is whether there is a "fair expenses" clause. I think the free market will fix itself. Supply and demand curves are too complex for me to even think about but with the supply coming in and NEW TECHNOLOGY (why are we afraid of what made this country what it is?) the prices will fall and along with those falling prices we'll find economic prosperity due to the jobs create, just keep the gov't out except for tax bonuses to companies creating these jobs and products.
connslvr 3 years ago
Why not ?, the myth perpetuated by the elite is that anything belonging to the public domain is socialist.
Clearly there are things that belong to us as a nation. I think that the oil underneath our countries dirt and it's bordering waters are not the property of only those wealthy enough to petition the government to give it to them.
WinkenBlinkenAndNod 3 years ago
Too last time I checked Venezuela was not having a problem with high gas prices. Before Hugo there were some problems, I think he rightfully asserted that the oil in Venezuala belonged to them and not multi-nationals.
The point at which I disagree is that there is a free market system in the United States.
Almost everything is more geared towards gaming the markets than freeing them.
WinkenBlinkenAndNod 3 years ago
I can't disagree that there isn't a free market system in the US. The government has its nose into everything, and I disagree with it. I think there should be something in place to protect the land owners when there's drilling, but if the oil companies can buy the land they deserve to drill freely within the boundaries that are on the surface. Who says that my pasture land is only what's on the surface? The nutrients and rocks in the soil are mine too. Why is oil different?
connslvr 3 years ago
$3,900,000,000.00 out of thin air
HowdyCallmeDaddy 3 years ago
The national debt is now at $9.5 trillion dollars.
What is $9,500,000,000,000.00 divided by 300 million people? That means that every man, woman, child, infant, grandma, little sis, even the family dog, owes approximately $31,666.66 dollars. Did you know that you owe China $31,666.66 Dollars? The government spends money. The Gov. Does not have any money they are spending our money and our children's money. What founding principles? the Constitution does not define an economic system. It recognizes both private and pulbic property.
You are just spouting ideology.
Natioanlization is specifically allowed in Constitutiona nd it has be done before in emergencies.
The Constution does not define a capitalist system ,or oa socialist one, nor any other.
It is a political document not an economic one.
mopsius 3 years ago
is that so? The constitution had no guiding principles? The foundation and principles of their ideals can be found in their writings. One rather comprehensive compilation is called the Federalist Papers.
Granite46 3 years ago
You can find it in two minutes if you look.
There is no economic system delineated in the Constitution, nor in any writings, beyond being anti-Mercantilist in the latter.
The Watermelon Army also speaks volumes.
Moreover, "Capitalism" had not been invented yet.
"Libertarian" is no one economic system, though the Austrians, et all, thinks so.
There are no such things a comlpetely free markets or a a completely planned economy.

The US oil companies are claiming only a %10 percent profit.
That's bullshit and strictly for tax purposes.
mopsius 3 years ago
National publicly own corporation, whatever you call it, not run by the politicians. Since 60 percent of oil is imported, oil would still have to purchased but domestic oil sold at cost or just above would bring the price down and also short-circuit the currency collapse.
There are other benefits as well--too complex to detail.
Doing it rationally might work.
Bush and Cheney produced this disaster, though Clinton helped.
mopsius 3 years ago
You get screwed two ways then. Your dividends certainly don;t cover the rise in oil prices.
Anyway the reason to nationalize is to disattach oil--domestically available oil anyway--from the currency.

Granite46 3 years ago
No, there is no contradiction, but it hinges on context.
Bastiat is very sophisticated.

When the state controls resources it has the power to control freedom of movement and basic liberty and personal choice. It can say who can buy what-- and when -- and at what price. All right, I think you're a waste of my time too. But my ideas aren't naive. They're the ideas that were espoused by Adam Smith and the founding fathers and worked for hundreds of years.

Adam Smith was naive. Read David Ricardo.
The "Founding Fathers" had no clear economic ideas beyond the protection of private property.
mopsius 3 years ago
1) Explain why Adam Smith was naive. I haven't read David Ricardo, but it sounds like they had similar ideas.
2) And that is the foundation of our entire economic system.
3) A truly free market is different from a decentralized market. In a free market, the government works to keep the market free.
4) Maybe it isn't. Maybe you're the naive one to think that the government can run the oil industry better than the market can. Again, name me one time that socialism has truly worked.

Let everyone pick this up, tell your friends and see the prices fall.
retepdlo 3 years ago
That will have little effect because it does not address supply and demand. The people will only end up buying from another supplier. If you want to have effect, enough people must truly conserve and buy less fuel from everyone! Then you have reduced demand and maintained supply.
Granite46 3 years ago
The oil price rise has nothing to do with supply and demand.
It reflects the collapse in US currency.
Euros rise every time oil goes up and the dollar falls.
mopsius 3 years ago
US Currency exchange rates have alot to do with the rise in oil price, I agree. But the laws of supply and demand were not suspended. Both forces are at work. Maybe not equally, but neither entirely. The answer is plainly not that simple. Many forces effect price. Exchange rates and S&D are, in my view, the most influential however.
Granite46 3 years ago
Ordinarily yes--not when the USD is collpasing.
mopsius 3 years ago
The market cost of oil exists and continues to increase because we the people need it and are willing to pay for it. It would have no value otherwise. The value of oil in the ground before expenditure of effort to drill and pump is the value created by all of us and if my sense of business is correct the one who creates the value should get to keep it. After it is pumped, transported etc., those who do that are entitled to recover their costs plus. Why do we give them the value we create?

This from a Nov 4, 2007 NY Times article.

Her attitude is one of all the people in DC, with the exception of a few good ones, this attitude is we will do whatever we want, we are the Govt. and will just take control cuz we have the power. They are the servants to the people, and Govt. should fear it's people.
