Very well put together, I remember them both very well, from my youth, going to the drags with my dad. I loved the cars, but when Jim ran I was always watching something else, wonder why my dad never caught me staring? Thanks for the vid
Seams Like drag racing was more fun back then now it seams more political now they fighting like John force did with Tony Pedrogon, and people wasn't cheating either things has changed
I think Pam stole the show, you know Jim was working those big Cubic inches on and off the strip, High revs and stroking up a storm. What a lucky guy he was.
I remember them well. Saw Jim run many times at Englishtown in the 60's and 70's and PAM was always with her guy. Thanks for posting a look back at once was. RIP Jim
they've made the cars safer and probably saved countless lives but at the same time they've made the sport so crazy expensive that only guys like Force with mega backing even has a chance out there. I forget the exactly number but it seems to me it costs like 15 hundred bucks just to make a pass in a nitro funny car. Yea, obviously they go much much faster now. Seat belts saved lives but that doesn't mean I should be required to wear them. Safety stuff shouldn't keep us from racing either.
Where's Famosa at? I remember seeing him many times back in the day at Maple Grove. I think I still have the pic that he used to give out to the fans. Racing lost a nice guy. I can just see him coming out today for the Geezers races they have.
Man this is a Pleasure to watch Jungle Jim and Pam !!! Remembering back in the days @ Englishtown when I first met them, Wow !!! Remembering the good old times and Drag Racing you only needed a Driver Lisence and they give you a Helmet to race, I did not have mine to Race my 69 Charger R/T doing 11:50 a Total Street Car with L60 on the Rear B&M Tranny, it was long ago it was far away it was So much better than it is today !!!
I always like Jungle Jim! he was one of the greatest and made Drag racing fun and he never turned a fan away he wasnt stuck up like a few I met, he made drag racing exciting and something to watch, he did things his way and he was an original. I was very sad back in 77 when he died. RIP Jungle Jim KING OF THE TRACK!
Jungle Jim stayed true to the big block Chevy thru the 60's as did numerous other guys driving Chevy funny cars (Doug Thorley, Dick Seaton, Dick Harrell, Hayden Profitt and many others). It wasn't until into the 70's before these guys (finally) started running the 392/426 Chrysler block simply because those hemi heads were hard to beat when they were breathing nitro.
My dear friend the late Andrew Lacorte was the owner of drag star news and a great photographer, he knew Jim very well, i miss them both. Godspeed Andy and Jim !
I was living at SoCal dragstrips from the end of 1963 until drafted (Vietnam) in 1969 ~ Lions, Irwindale, Orange County Int'l Raceway, Fontana and Pomona (for the Big Go West in February) and, trust me, John Force was absolutely NO WHERE in slight.
Really enjoyed the video but it makes me sad that things have changed so much in this country. Life was for livin back then, Glad I lived it hard and fast! I'm gonna go do a major burnout at the first stoplight I see. LOL
@fire1777 , Over 20 years ago, I owned a 66 Charger with a bored 440, 495 lift cam, shimmed heads, 3:91 posi gears, and a 2800 stall converter. I can recall on one occasion being at a red light at a busy intersection , and once the light turned green, I floored it . As I lit up my tires, a cop was sitting at the opposite end of intersection staring at me with a smile on his face , so I just pulled over because I knew I was busted. Ironically, the cop didn't ticket me.
As a child growing up near Fremont Drags, located in Calif, I enjoyed frequenting the drag strip with my dad. I got to see Jungle Jim Liberman on numerous occasions. I recall seeing him drive a dark red Funny car. It was enjoyable watching Jungle Jim do burnouts half way up the track and his hot looking wife Jungle Pam re-stage his car back to the starting point on track. Fremont Drags has been closed for many years now.
I watched Jungle Jim run a bunch at Lions, back in '66, '67 and '68 and I always loved the guy, and the car, because Jimbo ran the big-block Chevy Rat-Motor for much of his flopper career.
I got to see them there at Irwindale- now the miller brewery, OCIR and Lion's. Now all We have is Fairplex in Pomona. I go to Vegas, it's a better place to see a race.
Excellent Video! Made me feel like 13 again. I was lucky enough to see them at Atco Raceway in NJ as a kid. What a showman (And woman, WOW). They were worth the price of admission alone! I sure miss those days...
Indeed they were legendary and we booked Arfons Sox & Martin Garlits Shirley and Tommy Ivo and George Mongomery and Stone & Woods (before Doug Cook joined them) Jet Cars Wheelstanders you name it. Great times then I wouldnt trade my window of time for any other. Bill Moser who was our match race booking agent spoiled us.. he booked match races WE wanted to see. He has sent several handbills to Phil Burgess the NHRA nostalgia man. Again thanks for the vid. Jim
I wish we could go back to the good old day's I am pushing seventy building a 421 stroker For my S10..But my reflexes are shot ..That was one nice vidio .If it is your blood you will be back....I don't have a million dollar's but Still love to play and will not stop because I am gray.....
My father use to take me to the drag strip down at Englishtown/Oldbridge N.J. back in the early 70"s.I distinctly remembering Jungle Jim being there, the good ol days. The legend will live on in infimy! Nobody has matched him yet, never will.
In Australia we are now using digital television and that means heaps more TV stations . May we see Jungle Jim back on TV and by the way Wogon Train is on Channel 63 at 6.00 A.M. on Saturday .
What happened to those stunningly feminine women like Pam... where are they today? Even the skimpier-dressed pit girls now just don't have that same powerful-yet-sweet "woman-ness". Bring back 70s girls!
@anAllianceskater Sadly, Jungle died as a result of fatal injuries sustained in a collision (head-on, as I remember) with a bus....Sept. 9th, 1977 ( if my memory serves me correct )......and only 32 yrs old........ a
Very Tragic day for our sport....and Especially for Pam.
. Back then people would crowd behind a chain-link fence 20 or so feet from the actual staging area. When "JJ" lit the car-up everyone huddled there was inundated by a a thick fog with the odor of nitro, mixed with rubber and bleach. It was almost impossible to breathe in this 'fog', and oftentimes the lucky one's who were actually up-against the fence (closest) would often find their eyebrows singed from the initial blast of flame.
Respond to this video... And Pam was the absolute epitomy of raw feminine beauty, directing Jim back into the staging area. Her quick-pace would cause her long flowing hair and volumptious curves to excite me to watch. And all this was with a heart still pounding from the nitro-fumes and ear-piercing sound just witnessed from "JJ"s thunderous smoky burnout!
I was chief announcer at Muncie Dragway from 1960 to 1973... We had many great match races and drag racing stars.. but alas, I cannot remember Jungle Jim being here! I KNOW I would have remembered Pam! Not that we didnt KNOW about them... their legend was nationwide and I blame our promoter for not bringing them in. Thanks for the Vid takes me back to my youth and the fun days of drag racing!!!
@maitrejim Greeat Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove WI. Jungle Jim was always here. He was a featured draw for fans. We used to advertise for weeks building up to him coming on certain dates.

@maitrejim He was definitely at Muncie Dragway. We watched him run there on a Saturday night then at Van Wert, Ohio on Sunday afternoon. Those were the days when the people really got to meet the drivers at local match races. A lot of people never get to experience a blast of nitro exhaust in the nose. lol
We were at most of the match races and special events in the late 60s through early 70s at Muncie Dragway.
I sure would like to know how Pam is doing today. I hope she has had a wonderful life since her drag racing days. She is certainly a treasure. RIP Jim.
Loved the video, you can see why nostalgia drag racing is becoming more and more popular, getting back to the roots of the sport, as much as I love modern drag racing, they had just as much fun, if not more with out all the headache of modern technology, the picture at about 2:58 where can I find it , I've been looking for it with no luck
JJ and JP did an incredible amount to make drag racing a show. JJ did probably more than anyone in the T/F F/C world to pave the way for guys like Force and others than anyone else. He was that brick corner stone in the foundation, and without that brick, no foundation. As long as I'm alive, he will be missed. I hope that JP is doing well these days in her own rights. use to watch Jungle Jim race at Vargo drag strip in line lexington pa. Dad would take me and charlie in and sneek us in the trunk of our old 55 chevy.Man they were the days ! Thanks for the blast from the past

this is henry's friend who was at the drag race in maple grove,PA. It was only two days ago when the drag races were happening and with the help of John, we won the runner up trophy.
@johnnyz55z there probably wasnt as much crime was there..im only 13 racing jr dragster but i love the nostalga cars..we have nostalga races down where we race every once in a while
Man, does this take me back!. As a kid growing up in the sixties, Jungle Jim was one of my heros. When I think back to the good old days of Fuel Funny cars that actually looked somewhat like a car you could buy, JJ was first on my mind with Snake and Mongoose. Nicely done video!
brilliant vid m8 the 60s had nice racing cars im from the uk but i manage to get hold of a 60s anglia driven by larry lloyd im a big drag racing enthusiast since the age of 6 so once again good vid m8 very glad you put this on you tube
@kissklassics If only that were true !!......."a million dollars" in todays NHRA Fuel program.....will barely get you in the Back door....never mind even thinking about competing.....and I didn't say being "Competitive"......I said " never mind Even Thinking about....COMPETING " . To even Begin...to be even remotely competitive in NHRA TF & FC classes today requires a MINIMUM outlay of 8 - $10, 000, 000. !!!
Two of the coolest people on the scene when drag racing was king. NASCAR took over but now that that sucks, hopefully more people will watch drag racing.
I agree Arniepll....but drag racing sucks now too. It's lost it's perspective completely. I should know..I was there in the gasser wars. When a driver "drove" a car with no assistance. Thank goodness for the nostalgic circuit! :-)
I love the classic cars. The cars and drivers had such personality back then. A video like this reminds me how techno-sterile everything is today. The cars may be faster but the 70's were more thrilling. Thanks for a great step back in time.
Awsome video!!! Yes the best on youtube. Jim was my idol and i loved him as a kid. Got me into racing. Thanks for such a great post, and R.I.P. great one...
This is without a doubt the best video I have seen on YouTube. As Pam has said "the circus has left town", drag racing in no where near what is was in the 60s and 70s. Shame.
Wow! Now that's a compliment! Thank you very much! While I agree that drag racing is not what it was back in the '60s when cars had names other than corporate logos, I'm still amazed at the advances in technology and performance. There is nothing like the thunder of two nitro cars shaking the ground and pounding your chest as they fly down the strip! Plus you now get to watch all the events on TV, unlike the '60s and '70s when they rarely televised Drag Racing. Thanks for watching!
seeing these kind of vids really makes me think I was born in the wrong decade man, I would give anything ANYTHINg to be able to go back in time just for a day and meet Jim, pam, Landy, And all the greats back in Drags Hey day
History at it's finest!! Damn good ol days that are long gone and never reproduced! Cheers to the real good ol days. :)

That really was the good old days of drag racing. Now the NHRA has made it to where u need at least a million dollars to run a fuel car for a season
kissklassics 2 years ago 6
@kissklassics More like $4 million to run a fuel car.
CSXer 2 years ago 2
@kissklassics If only that were true !!......."a million dollars" in todays NHRA Fuel program.....will barely get you in the Back door....never mind even thinking about competing.....and I didn't say being "Competitive"......I said " never mind Even Thinking about....COMPETING " . To even Begin...to be even remotely competitive in NHRA TF & FC classes today requires a MINIMUM outlay of 8 - $10, 000, 000. !!!

frontenginedragsterd-You got THAT right!
Back when the car had a name and not just a corperate logo slapped on it.

Two of the coolest people on the scene when drag racing was king. NASCAR took over but now that that sucks, hopefully more people will watch drag racing.
ArniepII 2 years ago 4
I agree Arniepll....but drag racing sucks now too. It's lost it's perspective completely. I should know..I was there in the gasser wars. When a driver "drove" a car with no assistance. Thank goodness for the nostalgic circuit! :-)

Jungle Pam was and still is HOT!

I love the classic cars. The cars and drivers had such personality back then. A video like this reminds me how techno-sterile everything is today. The cars may be faster but the 70's were more thrilling. Thanks for a great step back in time.

truly legends, and pioneers of drag racing !!!!
nutnhemet 2 years ago
This is without a doubt the best video I have seen on YouTube. As Pam has said "the circus has left town", drag racing in no where near what is was in the 60s and 70s. Shame.
nflfix 2 years ago
